This place is just amazing. The selection of tapas are bit size enough for you to eat and not be overwhelmed but also great to eat family style with a group of friends(or actually with your family). And the food is just fantastic! The location is also perfect. Not too far off of Rembrandtplein to get lost, as a tourist, but far enough to eat good food at descent non-tourist prices. The ambiance of this place just breathes«come in and eat». I absolutely love the tables at the back that are large enough for a big group… perfect to also share communal with strangers. The atmosphere of this place is awesome… with the slightly dimmed lighting which invites intimate conversations. I love bringing my friends here because by the end I feel as though we’ve bonded even more and that is partly due to the feelings I get here. During the summer months it’s perfect to sit outside and eat with friends. I try to visit this place at least once or twice during the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons… it’s just perfect then.

Quiet during the day on Sunday’s. Everything we ate was good! Warning: menu is in Spanish and Dutch only, haha. We ordered(from favorite to still good): pulpo(cold octopus, olive oil, spice), jamon(signature cured ham sliced super thin), grilled vegetables, carne a la plancha(steak with fries, some fatty pieces), gambas ajillo(garlic shrimp.) Add the warm free bread with aioli they give you to start with, and that was enough for three of us! Would definitely come back again to try other things. Maybe at night time with some drinks ;)

Love the atmosphere at Pata Negra ! Reminds me of a tapas bar I visited in Spain last year :) so much comotion, laughter and great food ! Its not very vegetarian friendly, however, those who eat meat will be in carne heaven ! 5 tapas will cost you approx € 40, its not cheap but the portions are decent sized. Love coming here to get my Spanish fix, highly recommend you visit one of their many branches ! Especially Utrechtstraat, love the interior :)

My husband and I went for a late night bite one our first night in Amsterdam. The lamb and garlic with chips was excellent but everything else was so-so.

Let’s talk tapas in Amsterdam! Pata Negra! That’s it! End of story! Shabby looks, buzzing place, AMAZING food! Spanish staff is very attentive, friendly and quick! We had very nice evening and got complimentary drinks! Get your friends and go have a blast! Sangria is a must! Jamon Iberico has to be in your order!:)

I’ve been meaning to check out Pata Negra for a while, and when I saw the wicked cool building they are in on Utrechtsestraat I couldn’t resist(plus I was having a drink across the street at Huyschkamer anyway). Atmosphere: 5⁄5 It’s a hole in the wall with a rather large terrace(for the location). Cute, cozy, nice staff, quick service, really chilled out spot for a casual dinner, and super authentic — I could definitely imagine stumbling across this place somewhere in Madrid! Food: 3⁄5 I’m not a Spanish food expert by any means but I’ve traveled there enough to be familiar with the kinds of flavours and textures to be expected from tapas, and I have to say this was not it. The best things we ordered by far were the manchego cheese and the olives. And the bread that comes with the order. The calamares looked and tasted like they came out of a plastic bag, and the bacon-wrapped dates were good, but still tasted like they had been prepared a few hours ago. So I suppose my tip would be to stick to basics! Value: 2⁄5 The prices are the least authentic part of Pata Negra! Obviously in Amsterdam I would expect to pay more for everything but I have to say I found the prices a bit crazy even by Amsterdam standards, for the quality of food. And the house wine was a bit pricey as well(again, for the quality). One more note: The menu is so difficult to read! I don’t know why they chose such an impossible font, but I swear it took us 10 minutes to decipher it. And that’s with English, Dutch AND Spanish knowledge between the two of us! ;) Overall: 3.5 — nice spot if you’re in the area and in the mood for sharing a small dish. But I’m not sure I’d recommend it to a friend.

Delicious delicious! It was packed when we arrived as it seems to be a local party place. We tried sitting at the bar but there were too many people passing by so it wasn’t suitable for eating. The waiter promised us a seat within 10 minutes and he made good on his promise. We had papas bravas(spicy yummy), calamari, champigones, fried chorizo, bread with garlic mayo, mini lamb chops and sangria. All was reminiscent of Madrid tapas and at a decent price. Would definitely try again.

This restaurant is hopping on Thursday and Friday nights. If you have a group of 4 or more, I suggest making reservations. The place is popular across a wide demographic: college students, young & old professional, and couples. We had the chorizo(tasty, but not very spicy), the potatoes with garlic(delicious), olives(Spanish of course). I was surprise that they did not have red wine from Rioja. Instead, their house red was from Castilla y Leon and was perfectly OK. The atmosphere is pretty eclectic: spray painted walls(graffiti style), carved initials, and Spanish tiles.

The best thing about Pata Negra is probably the building. The kitschy tiles mixed with the painted walls, carved with visitor’s names all over are just hilarious. The food is OK but not everything is authentic. Their tortilla is a flat cake made from cooked potatoes and scrambled eggs. Nice with some added salt but nothing like the juicy, savoury loaf I know from Spain. The allioli is not home-made but a mash of sweet Dutch mayonnaise, some green stuff and little garlic. Seriously, you cannot do that. And I was wondering why the empanada was fried. I didn’t try the Pata Negra, but hey, how much can go wrong cutting off slices from a pork leg? In my opinion the food is overpriced for what it is. And although I like the place I’m not coming back to eat here.

Almost as in Spain: Pimientos de Padron(8 €), a plate of Pata Negra(20 €), and Gin Tonic. In the summer great outside. Inside either large group tables or small two people table make you feel a bit squeezed. Occasionally, they show games on a roll out screen if you’re into that.

Yummy tapas and cool atmosphere. It’s loud and trendy so not the most intimate of places to fine but the drinks are good and the Tapas is fantastic. A great place to go with friends.

Highly recommended! Service was the only flaw, it wasn’t terrible just a little disorganized. Still the eating experience is super nice, specially if the day is nice enough to sit outside. Good food, very good environment and very well done Spanish food. We ordered 5 different tapas and they were all very good and traditional. House wine was good, beer was cold.

The food was great, the service was great, the view on the street was great and the sangrias were great. Ordered the shrimp and chicken ajillo, chorizo and spinach egg shrimp omelet, all were piping hot and notably fresh. Even the chocolate cake and crème’ brûlée was good but I’m quite certain only the crème brûlée was made in house. Do not be discouraged by the outside appearance in that the food is really good.

I randomly had unscheduled stopover in Amsterdam — much to my delight — and so I looked to my fellow helpers for a place to eat. It ended up being a great decision, because Pata Negra was amazing. The divey, eclectic bar-restaurant was packed to the brim and full of energy. I was by myself, of course, so I grabbed one of the few remaining spots at the bar after a warm welcome and escort from The owner. He chatted with me a bit and then told the bartender to take good care of me. I ordered some sangria and a few tapas(empanadas, bacon wrapped dates and lamb steak bites) and soaked everything in. I read some of the messages carved into the walls and woodwork throughout the kitschy joint and people-watched across the tables tightly lined against the window. The empanadas and dates were tasty but the beef was tough and lacked flavor. I’ve only had bacon-wrapped dates once(I’m not too adventurous with food), and they were delicious. So comparatively, these weren’t as good. Honestly, if the food was just one step higher, I’d give the joint five stars. Everyone around me seemed to enjoy their food, though, and lots of people were ordering what looked like crème brûlée. I was too full to order dessert, though. The owner came by again later to sit and chat with me for awhile — and take a shot(yikes!). Even though I was new to Amsterdam and was exploring by myself, he made me feel right at home. I stayed for another sangria, but ended up leaving after only because I wanted to explore more of the city in my limited time there. I’d definitely recommend checking out this place.

Good: Must try the pata negra ham plate. It is out of this world. Match the plate with cheese. Bad:No english menu! Staff was not very helpful recommending the food nor interested in given us directions. They had a weird«i don’t care» attitude and sometimes rude. Very dirty restaurant, they didn’t even want to give us small plates. Food is ok. Sangria too fruity like cranberry juice. I will not recommend, will not go back.

The atmosphere is great and so is the Sangria we downed pitcher after pitcher! I really like the vibe, décor, and the staff. The food itself is pretty average I would say and not the crazy flavors you would expect if you were eating tapas in Spain, but I would definitely recommend it for the ambiance with a group of friends for some drinks and food!

There are restaurants that you go to for the food. Then there are restaurants that you go to for the atmosphere. On a sunny day, Pata Negra is definitely the latter. The tapas are decent — not spectacular. But the terrace is lively and the staff is one of the friendliest in Amsterdam. Sangria was enjoyable though a bit too fruity for my taste. The octopus was delish. All the other tapas were ok — ate it but not particularly memorable.
