Febo

After watching an episode of The Layover, I set my sights on checking this place out. I was very surprised to see a guy cooking the food on site prior to placing it into the vending machine. There was even a small counter where you could order some freshly made French fries. I didn’t have a huge appetite when I visited, so I went with broodje kroket (croquette in a bun). The kroket must’ve been a fresh one, because it was pretty damn hot. I’m not an expert in Dutch food, but it was edible. I gave my buddy half and we were on our way. I wouldn’t recommend having a meal here, but it’s worth as much of a visit as the I Am Amsterdam letters for any tourist.

Everything is expensive, even for the high prices in Amsterdam.

My friend really wanted me to try Febo, and it was different than I imagined. I was not expecting an actual person cooking the food in the back, but makes sense. We had a croquette with curry and beef, surprisngly, it wasn’t bad at all! Quite tasty, hot, and cheap!
I would much rather prefer eating at McD’s across the street to satisfy the munchies, but this place was rather decent.

Fried fast food of croquettes and fries. Gross and amazing at the same time. The little see-​through lockers filled with croquettes are super cute. A little confusing at first on how to operate but then you figure it out. Get your change first before putting your money into the locker. You must have exact change otherwise the machine eats your money (learned this the hard way — luckily it wasn’t that much). I really like the croquette in a burger bun and the satay croquette. AMAZING when you are eating it but then the sense of regret follows you afterward. After two days of stopping by Febo twice for the satay croquette– never again will I partake in this cheap, fried, and completely guilt-​ridden food again. Next time I am in Amsterdam, I will try the fries because practically all the Dutchies were only ordering the fries. Maybe they are onto something… hmmm

I love this place, such a great idea for quick snacks and food, they are heated and ready to go, would be great in any major city — come to Bahrain

Gehört zu dem Amsterdam Trip dazu!!!

Un distributeur des temps modernes. Tout ce qu’il y a à manger est exposé dans des fenêtres réfrigérées. Du fast food hollandais: hamburgers, croquettes, beignets de fromage, saucisses frikadel On insère les pièces (entre 1EUR et 2EUR) et on appuie sur le bouton: la fenêtre s’ouvre et on prend sa bouffe. On peut ensuite s’appuyer contre les comptoirs pour déguster sur le pouce à toute heure ou à la sortie d’une soirée arrosée. Un super concept. Dans la journée on peut aussi acheter des sodas et des milk shake ou des frites faites à la minute et du poulet au service à emporter. Le ravitaillement des vitrines est fait par le cuisinier qu’on aperçoit derrière le comptoir. C’est propre, pratique, et meilleur que mcdo. Nous y avons mangé sur le pouce à deux pour 11,50e. Il manqué seulement deux petites tables pour né pas manger debout.

Zugegeben, ein kulinarischer Hochgenuss sind die Burger und Kroketten aus den Automaten nicht. Schlecht sind sie aber auch nicht, halt standardisierte Massenprodukte. Bisher ist mir auch noch nix überlagertes untergekommen, durch den großen Andrang wird ja eigentlich ständig nachgefüllt. Meiner Meinung gehört ein UFO (Unknown Fried Object) von febo genauso zum Amsterdambesuch wie das Heinecken. Wenn auch kein geschmackliches Highlight, so ist das Verkaufskonzept doch irgendwie spaßig. Zudem sind die Kroketten für unkundige des holländischen quasi frittierte Überraschungseier. Und günstig ist es, für Amsterdam Zentrum, auch noch.

Wir waren nicht begeistert. EIgentlich denkt man ja, dass man in Holland nix verkehrt machen kann, wenn man etwas fritiertes bestellt, aber das war nix. War aber eigentlich auch klar. WIe auf dem Bild zu sehen, werden die Speisen halt warmgehalten. Das muss isch ja irgendwie auf den Geschmack auswirken
Aber auch die frischzubereiteten Pommes waren nicht gut.
Ich muss es nicht noch mal haben.

Positiv ist das man rund um die Uhr, sehr günstig, etwas zu Essen bekommt und das ohne Wartezeit.
Allerdings ist der Geschmack nur mittelmässig.

Ce fast food typiquement néerlandais a un concept: ou un distributeur vous sert de drôles de croquettes moyennant 1euro50, ça ressemble a de la nourriture pour chien, c’est rigolo, à tester une fois, c’est cher pour ce que c’est mais ça a le mérite de nous surprendre.

Eigentlich bin ich überzeugter Systemgastronomiehasser. aber FEBO ist schon echt witzig. Geld rein. Klappe auf. the fastest food on earth :-). Der Werbespruch «de lekkerste» ist vielleicht ein bisschen übetrieben. aber essen kann man das undefinierbare Zeugs schon. schmeckt halt ein wenig künstlich.
Der Spannungsfaktor ist für mich als Deutschen mit keinen Holländischkenntnissen auch sehr hoch… Bei den Kroketten weiß man nämlich nicht was man da eigentlich zieht. einfach überaschen lassen — Es bleibt spannend

Haha, hier gibts Fast Food in Automaten. Geld einwerfen, Klappe öffnen und Essen rausholen. Beispielsweise merkwürdige Kroketten, frittierten Käse, Burger, und ich weiß nicht was alles noch. Die Preise sind sehr günstig aber man kann jetzt auch nicht gerade sagen dass es lecker war. Wer auf die Automaten keine Lust hat kann aber auch reingehen und am Schalter bestellen.

Immer frisch und lecker. und wer ein Problem mit den «Essensklappen» hat, kann sich auch Pommes oder Chickenteile Direkt am Imbisstand holen. Letzteres wird auch vor den eigenen Augen gefüllt und schmeckt super. Sehr zu empfehlen für die Menschen, die nicht nach Amsterdam kommen um ihren Tag in Restaurants und Cafés zu verbringen.

I only went in because I was so intrigued by the vending machines. everything is deep fried. the croquettes were quite good. it is part of the amsterdam experience.

Essen aus einem Automaten?
Hier gibts diverse Spezialitäten und auch Burger, welche wirklich lecker sind und frisch zubereitet werden. Auch wenn so ein Burger mal länger im Automaten liegt schmeckt er trotzdem noch sehr gut.
Eine sehr gute Alternative zu McDonalds, BurgerKing und Co.

Angeblich ist Essen aus der Wand in Amsterdam bzw. Holland ja ganz normal. Ich frage mich dann nur, warum vor und in den Febo-​Filialen dann meist Touristen oder Holländer, die ohnehin nichts mehr merken, stehen. Ganz ehrlich, es gibt nur wenige schlechtere Möglichkeiten zu futtern. Für mich ist das definitiv nichts. Dazu bräuchte es schon viel Alkohol und wenige andere Anbieter. ;-)

Super Geschäftsmodel und immer frisches Fastfood. Hier kann man bereits für ein paar Euro satt werden. Die Burger und Snacks kommen aus dem Automaten, sind aber stets frisch und warm! Die Pommes und Chickenteile holt man sich vom Imbiss stand.
Das Essen schmeckt einfach und das Konzept ist lustig, hoffentlich auch bald in Deutschland.

I went to the branch on Damrak not Leidsestraat, however you’re undoubtedly going to get pretty much the same experience at all of them.
Basically you get krokets (a meaty mix wrapped in dough and breadcrumbs), burgers and the like out of hot glass vending cabinets.
They taste pretty much of cardboard and after trying a couple of the items I felt no compulsion to go ever again.
The slogan de Lekkerste means the tastiest in Dutch. I think the least tasty would be far closer to the mark.
McDonalds looks like a Michelin-​starred restaurant by comparison.

Febo ist toll. Ich steh auf diese Essensklappen auch wenn es auf der Welt eigentlich wirklich eine Menge besseres Essen gibt. Es ist auf jeden Fall eine lustige Sache wenn man sich irgendwo schnell mal Fastfood holen will.

Cadena de locales de comida rápida muy conocidos en Amsterdam pero que la verdad muy sanos no deben ser. Son un montón de máquinas expendedoras de comida que están abiertas las 24 horas del día, ves el producto que mas te interesa, metes el precio indicado y te lo llevas al momento.
Como solución para una comida rápida o para picar algo puede ser buena idea, pero como costumbre para comer no es muy interesante.
Además casi todo lo que ofrecen son cosas fritas y cuando lo ves no tiene una pinta muy apetitosa.

These food kiosks are really a novelty for anyone not brought up in the Netherlands. At the automats the food sits behind little glass doors and you put in coins to open them and take out the food. Typical things that are served include frikandellen (a mixed meat skinless fried sausage), kroketten (fried breadcrumbed ragout of meat), kaassoufle (crispy fried cheese). As you can probably see it’s not exactly health food, but some of it is quite tasty (well, in my opinion anyway) and it’s amusing to use if you’re not used to it. There is often also a small counter where you can buy fries, hamburgers and drinks.

Great initiative but I would rather walk a bit further down the road to a food place with less plastic food.

These fried food snack shops in Amsterdam were a novelty for us since they were like vending machines staffed by people. The wall was covered withy little plastic lockers, each containing a croquette of some type. Unfortunately all the labels were in Dutch so we didn’t know what we were eating but to be honest they mostly tasted the same! You put your coins in the slot, which allow you to open the door for your selected snack box. Though I’m sure it’s terribly unhealthy and down at heel, it was great fun as well and the food was hot, cheap and tasty. So it’s good enough for me!

God, how I love Febo! My other half is Dutch and so on our regular trips to Amsterdam, I always partake of a little Febo goodness.
Be warned, there’s little in the way of healthy food here. It’s all fried, fried, fried. Think Homer Simpson. But my God, it’s beautiful. Forget about your cholesterol count and dig in.
The novelty factor is also part of Febo’s attraction. Self-​service via little plastic windows — you pick exactly what you want, drop in the coins and pick up your food.
My favourites are the krokets (there are several different kinds) and the kaasouffle (deep-​fried cheese). The frites are great too, served of course with mayonnaise.
Although the previous reviewer pointed out the labels are in Dutch, in my experience locals are only too happy to translate for you if you ask nicely.

Febo ! de lekkerste…
Eine super Sache. Ich gebe zu, im Grunde auch verachtenswert. Käseschleim in frittierter Verpackung oder undefinierbare Fleischmasse in frittierter Verpackung. Frikadel, Käsetasche, Hünchenspies, Kroketten…
Aber, es gibt nichts besseres, als nachts ziemlich angetrunken noch bei Febo vorbeizugehen und so ein Röllchen zu sich zu nehmen. Am tollsten finde ich persönlich vermutlich diese Automatensache, Geld rein, Klappe auf, Essen raus. Ich liebe das.
