Leidseplein

Shops and cafes are nicer and cleaner around here than by the Centraal Station. It gets nicer as you get away from the station to be honest. Some of my favorite places are here, but there are still many tourist-​only orientated shops and cafes as well.

Oof, touristy to the max. A good spot to jump off the tram, and then head down an alley to get away from the throngs.

Wer auf überfüllte Plätze mit viel Touristen steht, ist hier genau richtig, denn hier ist was los. Das Leben tobt und man kann viel sehen. Ein Café und Restaurant reiht sich ans andere. Breakdances performen und geben ihr Bestes. Für uns war es nur ein Durchgang, der Interessant war, aber erdrückend. Abends viele bunte Lichter und Getose.

Lots of bars, cafés, shops and restaurants. There are hotels in this area so, it’s quite touristy. There’s also a big casino that’s popular amongst tourists.
It’s easy to get here and is one of the tram and bus stops. Walking in this area whether during the day or at night is quite safe. Famous landmarks, museums are within walking distance from Leiseplein.

The waiter was not really friendly. When I drank water from my own water bottle, he said that consuming outside food and drink is not allow and he added this is common sense. I agreed but there is always a more polite way of conveying this message to the customers instead of telling us in a sarcastic way. I will never visit this restaurant again.

Leidseplein is really lively place. It is the nucleus to a lot of local bars, clubs, and restaurants. It is also a dividing line between the city and the more residential. North of it you have all the shops, eateries, etc that reaches all the way to Centraal Station. South of it you start to hit some of Amsterdam’s most famous parks.
During the day this place is filled with shoppers, people watchers, performers, and just all kinds of life from all over the world. At night, this place is filled with bar hoppers, club goers, and vampires.

Leidseplein is popular with tourists because it’s full of shops, bars, restaurants and a few hotels. There are lots of places to hang out so it’s always busy here. There are always lots of people. There are also a few dance clubs here contributing to the masses of people milling about at night. There are a few restaurants that I like here despite all the tourists. In my opinion the better restaurants and bars are down the side streets not quite off the beaten path but still nearby so you can find nice places to eat and drink here. Check it out.

A very touristy place with a lot of restaurants, bars, cafés, etc. If your looking for good food, steer clear of this area, almost everything here is a tourist trap. It’s not all bad though, it is nice to sit outside at a café in the summer and watch crazy amounts of people walk by and during the winter they have an iceskating rink here.
If your just visiting Amsterdam, for sure check it out, but go somewhere else for dinner.

fun fun fun — this place never stops. While I never did get to sample the all-​you-​can-​eat ribs at the sports bar, this place was a welcome refuge on Queens Day when Rembrantplein was a nightmarish press of people.
There is a lot going on here any time of the day and night with dozens of shops, eateries and more. Don’t just stop looking on the main street though — walk down some of the side streets for excellent Greek, Chinese and other food.

If you go to Leidseplein on a warm summer’s evening there’s no place like it. The atmosphere is jumping with excitement as people sit drinking, talking, smoking and generally enjoying a great atmosphere.
The square’s bars and restaurants have a more relaxed feel than other epicentres of the city and I’ve started to hang out in this area more and more. It’s less francic and feels nicer. Good restaurants, bars and coffeeshops and easily accessible from most other areas.

A good place to wait for a tram as you can watch the ‘entertainment’ in the square, recently though it’s just been a bloke hitting self returning tennis practice balls. Loads of bars if that’s your thing, some dodgy clubs with big bouncers that never seem to have anyone in.

Ooooh love, love, love Leidsplein. The Bulldog Palace is the best bar here (shame they removed the Bulldog SportsBar a few years back though). Fantastic, buzzing environment round this square — just watch out for the trams!

DAS ist Amsterdam wie wir es lieben. Romantische kleine Cafés, Restaurants ringsherum lebendiger Trubel, Strassenkünstler. Amsterdam — Leidseplein!

Die Stimmung hier ist einfach gut, für jeden gibt es etwas zu schauen und zu erleben, etwas zu genießen in den umliegenden Cafes oder Bars. Ja, hier kann man es aushalten.

Liebe Anja, das mit den Weihnachtsmärkten hast du gut gesehen. Die sind in den Niederlanden anders als in Deutschland. Aber lass mich ergänzend berichten, dass in in vielen, vielleicht den meisten niederländischen Familien der 5. Dezember fast intensiver gefeiert wird als Weihnachten. Zu Weihnachten wird gerne gut gegessen und gemütlich im Glanze des Lichterbaums zusammengesessen. Entsprechend sind die Auslagen in den Geschäften und auch auf den Weihnachtsmärkten. Aber dann ist ja das Eigentliche auch schon vorbei, nämlich der Pakjesavond, den Wikipedia so schnöde Paketabend nennt. Dicht dran ist auch daneben… lasst euch das Wort mal auf der Zunge zergehen:
pakjesavond. Päckchenabend, nichts ist schöner, als ein pakje auszupacken. Und das geschieht traditionell in niederländischen Familien am Nikolausabend. Das ist dort ein Feiertag wie in Deutschland der Heiligabend. Bis mittags wird gearbeitet. Und dann heißt es feiern. Dazu gehört traditionell, dass jedes Familienmitglied ein sein Geschenk begleitendes Gedicht verfasst, selbstgeschrieben versteht sich.
Sintaklaas landet jedes Jahr im Amsterdamer Hafen, wo er mit dem Schiff ankommt. Dann schwingt er sich auf seinen Schimmel und durchquert Stadt und Land hoch zu Ross. Gefolgt wird er von seiner Helferschar, den Zwarte Pieten, (schwarze Peter als Gruppenerscheinung), dazu gibt es in den Geschäften schwarze Farbe zu kaufen, die rasend Absatz findet und staunend habe ich bei solchen Umzügen Schwarze gesehen, die sich in Farbe geschmissen haben, eine Farbe, die klebt wie der Teufel und am Ende der Veranstaltung schlecht abzukriegen ist. Aber das tut der Freude keinen Abbruch und die Straßen sind gesäumt von Menschen, die seit Stunden warten, dass Sint mit seinen zwarte Pieten erscheint und dann brüllen die Kinder voller Lust: «Piet, Piet, Piet», es ist ein bunter Umzug mit Musikkapellen und Kamelen, mit klingendem Spiel und tanzenden Pieten. Und danach dürfen die Kinder zu Hause ihre Geschenke auspacken (pakjes), und die Erwachsenen haben zu dem Zweck den Nachmittag frei und die Geschäfte geschlossen.
Weihnachten ist nichts dagegen.
Wie beim Karneval in Köln gibts für die Amsterdamer Kinder als Belohnung für stundenlanges geduldiges Warten auf den Nikolaus snoepjes (deutsch: Bonbons, bonbons auf Niederländisch = Pralinen, wie in Belgien, und den Wartenden am Wegesrand wird auch zugeworfen: Lakritz = niederländisch drop (nicht Drops!!)
So sind auch in diesem Fall Länder und Sprachen dicht beieinander aber beileibe nicht gleich.
Holland ist wunderbares Land. Es lohnt sich, auf Entdeckungsreise zu gehen.

Weihnachtsmärkte sucht man in Amsterdam vergeblich. Feiern die Holländer kein Weihnachten? Wir haben ganze 2 Weihnachtsmarktähnliche Orte gefunden. Auf beiden gab es einen Poffertjesstand, zwei Waffelbuden und eine Eislaufbahn. Kein Glühwein, keine Wurststände… nix. Die Deko in der Stadt ist auch eher spärlich und meist kitschig. Um Weihnachtsstimmung zu erlangen sollte man lieber andere Städte aufsuchen.
Amsterdam lieber wieder im Sommer.

Ja, hier ist immer was los und für jeden was dabei. Um den Platz wimmelt es von Steakrestaurants und wenn man ein bisschen Durchhaltevermögen mitbringt findet man sogar eine Pizzeria mit allen Pizzen zum halben Preis. Aber ob ich die wiederfinden würde…
Ansonsten gibt es viele Irish Pubs, eine Handvoll Coffee Shops und ein paar eher edle Nachtclubs wie das Jimmy Woo. Die beiden weltweit bekannten Konzerthäuser Melkweg und Paradiso sind auch am Platz sowie das De Balie, ein nettes Bistro mit superschnellem kostenlosen W-​Lan und kulturellen Veranstaltungen.
