Talk about hospitality! Was recommended to this place and it did not disappoint. I went in early and snagged a table near the bar. I ordered my first traditional Dutch meal; stamppot with sauerkraut and sausage. I ate the whole thing! Initially I asked if there was anything else I should accompany with my meal and I was advised to stop, especially since I could always go back to the menu if I needed something else. I’m so glad for that recommendation! After I let my food digest, it was apparent that washing it down with a glass of red would keep me satisfied. I was in no rush to leave. I ended up staying for a bit at the bar enjoying conversations about the history of the bistro and recommendations for the city itself — even got a taste of two fried amazing treats(fried cheese and bitterballin)… And more wine. Within the hour, the place was packed! Highlights: approachable and cozy atmosphere, I felt very welcomed and the staff works very well together. There’s nothing more that I love than witnessing the pride and presence of a happy work environment. Note: The owner is one of the most real individuals I have ever met. Charming, hilarious, and full of talent!(She sang to almost every song and killed it!) Thank you to the team — I will never forget my experience here. Highly recommend this place! I will be back as they carry their own beer!

Dutch comfort food in a cosy vibe. The food was simple… but great, I expected New York Dinner level food… but it came out better than expected, the wait staff(there were only 2) put in a great Hustle expected a much longer wait. Not bad!

A lovely restaurant with authentic Dutch food(to me at least), and it was all delicious! The service is friendly, and the food came out fast. The décor is cozy and comfortable, making us feel as if we were eating in someone’s home. A worthy stop while in Amsterdam.

Fantastic authentic Dutch comfort food with cozy vibes(bathed in red light, ironically) I was here a few months ago in cold weather and it was a huge relief from the chilly rainy outdoors when we stepped inside. The friendly server recommended the stamppot and Mom’s Stewed Beef when we asked for traditional Dutch cuisine. Unsure of what to expect in traditional Northern European cuisine(not the best reputation amongst Asians and Asian foodies, from my experience), my mom and I were pleasantly surprised as we enthusiastically gobbled down our piping warm and filling dinners. We enjoyed the atmosphere, service was great, and food left a very positive impression of Dutch cuisine!

Hidden in plain sight in the Jordaan, you can find this very gezellig little place bursting with some Dutch traditional style. The menu is simple but great! You can order a club sandwich or a salad(pretty normal) but also they have traditional Dutch stuff for lunch like a quite tasty homemade croquette on bread which is what I had, a delicious broodje rookworst(almost as good as HEMA’s) and a giant frikandel! Service is great! The people running it are funny and quick to take your order. They make they’re own house beer which was described by the waitress as «pretty much like Heineken but tastes way better» and let me tell you, that was a spot on description. If you’re around the Jordaan and you’re a bit hungry for some Dutch goodies, this is definitely the perfect place! Oh! Also, they make their own Saté Saus! If you order some chips, ask for some on the side, it’s bliss!

Cozy neighborhood gem that seems to be a favorite with locals. Dropped by on a Saturday night and the place was packed but still was able to grab a table for two quickly. Split the farmer steak which was well prepared, covered with well seasoned onions and mushrooms, and served with ubiquitous frites… Not a destination but would definitely return if I was in the neighborhood

Very quaint place with typical Dutch comfort food. Stumbled into this place by accident and we were pleasantly surprised. Friendly staff and good quality food.

In 2012, we stumbled upon this gem while searching for a place to eat near our hotel. We were the only people in the restaurant at the time and it was a memorable night. The staff was hospitable and brought us amazing dishes as well as providing entertainment. The owners themselves were making the food in the back at the time, giving it a personal touch. All together very warm and inviting. Everything was delicious, one of the best traditional Dutch meals I’ve ever had. Now, in 2015, we knew we wanted to come back and managed to find it once more. We had the same great service and great Dutch food. The owners were also still managing the restaurant and working in the kitchen. I highly recommend this restaurant to someone seeking excellent traditional Dutch food and inviting atmosphere!

Overpriced and extremely slow service. We waited over an hour for«authentic Dutch food» that was mediocre at best. So dissapointed that we wasted part of our last day in Amsterdam here!

If you’re in Amsterdam and you want a great Dutch experience, this is it! we had two classics: Stamppot for me and Granny’s Casserole for my wife. They were both epic. The place is charming and efficient and very reasonable. Don’t miss this one!

We went to this restaurant expecting to eat something typical Dutch. We were very disappointed because they didn’t have several of the most typical dishes, so I had to eat a steak with french fries … My partner ask for the fish, the soles were very small. I don’t think we go back again knowing that there is a risk that the typical food is finished again.

A real gem, genuine Dutch fare just around the AirBnB we were staying. I had«Granny’s Casserole» — three bowls on top of a plate, one each of meat stew, potatoes and red cabbage. Definitely one of the best comfort foods I’ve ever tasted. The meal is so simple, yet, so satisfying, so nuanced in taste and flavors, and can only be made by someone who has been cooking it for decades and cooking it with love. It’s the secret of your Mom’s, or Grandmom’s basic meat stew and sides that is common across many cultures. The place was small and there were 2 large groups that were just really celebrating, a happy atmosphere, loud with a of of laughter and joy. The vibe was great, like you were part of a fiesta in the local square. I was happily eating it out of the bowls when the friendly server informed me that I was doing it all wrong: you remove all 3 bowls, layer the boiled potatoes on the plate with the stew, then the cabbage on top. LOL — what do I know? My first traditional Dutch dinner and it was a fantastic experience.

Came here after visiting the Anne Frank House It was highly recommended by a random, kind, local women we asked on the street. Being it was our second night in Amsterdam we wanted to try traditional dutch food, and she told us we MUST try it here. It was crowded with both locals and tourists on a Friday night. The restaurant itself is tiny and cozy, yet loud and lively. Walking inside is like walking into a Dutch home kitchen, especially because the owner(who herself is an enthusiastic and warm women) is there walking around greeting, and hugging everyone like they are family. She really made us feel welcome and right at home! Though the restaurant was full, and the only available table was reserved, our server was nice enough to squeeze us in. We forgot to order an appetizer(oops!) but as our entrée’s I chose the Dutch stamppot with beef stew, and my mom went with the chicken schnitzel. I stole a bite of the chicken and it was juicy, flavorful, and perfectly breaded, it came accompanied with a side of lovely thick and crispy french fries. While the chicken was good, the stamppot was what really stood out! The beef stew was deliciously seasoned, and the beef was so tender! The mashed potatoes with gravy were so fluffy and the sauerkraut that was mixed in was the perfect finishing touch! The portions were huge and reasonably priced though most of my plate was filled with potatoes rather than meat, the amount of meat they give you is also very generous. We were pretty hungry, and I generally have a big appetite, but though they were delicious I was only able to finish half the portion of potatoes due to how filling they are and just to give you an idea of the portion sizes! For dessert we shared an order of the mini puff pancakes with butter and powdered sugar. They were really just mini versions of breakfast pancakes but they were good nonetheless! We shared one order and it was plenty for 2 of us! Service was fast, warm and hospitable. The servers made sure we had everything we needed at all times. They gave us enough time after seating to look over the menu and decide, and the food and drinks came out quickly. We never felt rushed, no matter how busy it was, we never felt like they were pushing us to pay and leave. We were able to sit and relax after finishing eating. Such a lovely Dutch restaurant! I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a filling and tasty, traditional Dutch meal in Amsterdam!

My husband and I stumbled upon this little bistro after visiting the Anne Frank House. What a gem! The atmosphere is very casual and inviting, just as you’d expect at an old friend’s grandmother’s home. My goodness, the food. It was excellent. We had the garlic butter and bread to start(amazing). My husband had Granny’s Casserole(stewed beef with Dutch herbs and onions served with red cabbage and boiled potatoes), and I had the Chicken Schnitzel(with farmer fries and a Dutch salad). Perfection. The food was perfect after being out in the cold rain for over an hour waiting in the Anne Frank line. But it would have been just as perfect regardless of the situation. Excellent food, excellent service and excellent ambiance. If we come back to Amsterdam, we’ll for sure be coming back here!

*WARNING* this is a lengthy but WORTHWHILE review! I wish I could give this place 10 stars! My boyfriend and I went on a trip to Europe earlier this year and we spent about a week of our vacation in Amsterdam. In that week, this was the only place we ate at twice! We wanted to experience as much variety as possible in all the places we were, in a short amount of time. But once we ate here, we couldn’t stop thinking(and talking) about it! We HAD to go back again before we left! We tried the chicken schnitzel and mom’s stewed beef on our first visit, and even months later my mouth waters at the thought of the stewed beef! The schnitzel was definitely good but the real prize is mom’s stewed beef! The dish had a perfect balance of savory and sweet with the red cabbage, mashed potatoes and beef. The meat was incredibly tender and bursting with flavor. I am actually now a pescetarian but wouldn’t hesitate at another serving of that meal, meat and all! We also tried a liqueur at dessert that, I later found out, the owner makes herself in a bunch of different flavors! It’s called Jordaan Likeur and the flavor we had was Jankbak(macaroon flavor of course!!!). Having spent quite a few years tending bar, I was quite impressed with the liqueur and obviously wanted to buy a bottle to bring back to the states. To my dismay, this was not something that was produced to be sold by the bottle and there was nothing comparable at any of the many stores we looked in. We stopped back at the restaurant and happened upon the owner, her girlfriend, and a few friends singing in Dutch merrily along a track that I was explained was recorded by the multi talented owner herself! We explained how much we enjoyed our dining experience and how we planned to return again before our departure. We asked if there was a place where we could purchase a bottle of that delicious macaroon liqueur and the owner offered to bring us one of the stock she held for the restaurant! Upon our return we, once again, ordered moms stewed beef and this time paired it with the meatball stamppot. This is definitely my recommendation for anyone wanting a taste of authentic Dutch food! The stamppot has sauerkraut mixed in the mashed potatoes with gravy and a delicious moist meatball! The stewed beef is still our favorite dish but, really, everything we had there was amazing… To top it off we got to take home a 0.7 liter bottle of that remarkable liqueur!!! The next time I find myself in Amsterdam I plan to spend a LOT of time here! THANKSFORREADINGLOL!

Kudos to Unilocalers Dennis M. and John L. for leading us on this Dutch food quest! I absolutely fell in love with this place. The employees and the patrons all broke out into song after song providing wonderful entertainment throughout the night. It was all in Dutch but I liked the singing all the same! On to the food. We got the traditional Dutch Stamppot. It came with a meatball, mashed potatoes, gravy and bacon. A hearty comfort plate. Mom’s Stewed Beef with meat, potatoes and red cabbage was homey and tasty as well. We really liked these two dishes. The Dutch steak was good but at the end of the day, it was a normal small steak with fries. Our beverages paired well with the food. A few shots of the traditional Dutch liquor Jenever and a few local brews from Dorpsbrouwerij de Pimpelmeesch. Perfect on such a wet and cold evening. It’s not a Dutch feast without some Dutch desserts. Their poffertjes came out hot and fresh, loaded with powdered sugar. Delicious! The Dutch apple pie crust and filling was nicely done. Tante Leen ice cream with eggnog and chocolate sauce was decadent. We were all stuffed but we ate and drank everything! The waiters kept us liquid all night(flat, bubbly or spirited), filling and refilling our glasses, then left us alone the rest of the time until we needed something. In the US, we are used to waiters checking up on us and waiting to pick up the tab. But in Holland, they don’t do that until we specifically ask for it. It really added to the family/comforting feel of the place which I liked. We had an awesome evening! Good food and drinks. Great company. Free entertainment. We ended up closing the restaurant down after a 2+ hour dinner. I highly recommend trying Bistro Bij Ons out. We will definitely make it our stop the next time we are in town.

On the hunt for a traditional Dutch dish we asked a couple of peeps we met at a Unilocal event and they all seemed to be in agreement that this is the spot we should visit. I am glad we listened! After visiting Anne Frank’s house we strolled the canal snapping photos, but for some reason it felt like the temp dropped 20 degrees. We were FREEZING. It was time to eat(and drink wine). Just a block or two from Anne Frank this is the PERFECT place to come and grab some traditional dishes for any tourists in town(yet, still good enough that the locals love it!). Walking in the place is small, and the friendly server/owner(?) greeted us and let us choose a table. As we sat down she asked if we were cold? Still had our coats and hats on as we sat down. Yes, we were freezing! She smiled and took our orders. WINE… we will start with some WINE please. As we sipped on the red stuff, layers of clothing came off. The ice in my veins began to melt and my skin no longer felt like it was pricked with needles. Yes… this is nice. At that moment I got to really enjoy the coziness that is this place. It’s decorated with various traditional items such as clogs and Black Pete(I did some research) which is apparently part of their culture, but for Americans can be a bit shocking as it’s what looks like dolls in black-face. So we got down to the grub. Both were recommended dishes. 1) Pea soup — Whoa! Any ice left in my soul melted into a pitiful puddle of water when I took my first sip! It was pea soup but with a different flavor profile than you might be used to and it comes with toast(?) with some raw meat that looked like bacon. It was good! 2) Stramppot — THE dish to get when going dutch… no, not splitting the bill, but rather grabbing some Dutch grub! A mountain of mashed potato with sauerkraut underneath. I don’t think I have ever had sauerkraut. Then there is a puddle of gravy in the middle and a sausage sticking out of it. *CAUTION* when you are photographing this dish be careful the angle you take the pick at as it could look like something completely different! Aside from the appearance this was delicious! The flavors blended well(once again a totally diff spice/taste profile than what I am used to, but still great!). Filling, and it felt like it was good old comfort food(which our friends later confirmed as this is indeed comfort food.) Good enough to warm your soul! PLUS — Free WiFi! This was great for us as we didn’t have service and getting on WiFi was the only way we could check into businesses on Unilocal(sad how addicted I am to checking in/seeing updates!) but this was a nice break to get online. The server warned us — she would give the password but we still had to talk to each other! Not just be on our phones. HA!
