Äss Bar

Beim Schlendern durch Zürich haben wir den Laden zufällig entdeckt. Der Aufsteller «Frisch von gestern — gemeinsam gegen Foodwaste», hat uns neugierig gemacht. Das Angebot war um 17.30h noch top. Von Brot über Gebäck bis zu Torten, eine leckere Auswahl. Die Bedienung war sehr freundlich und die herzhaften Gebäckteile wurden auch noch warm gemacht. Essen satt für Low Budget, zwar vom Vortag aber optisch und geschmacklich von super Qualität.

Sie nehmen den Kampf gegen Foodwaste auf — endlich!!! Das ist schon rein moralisch gesehen ein MUST diesen Ort aufzusuchen. Es ist alles frisch von gestern! Die Ware ist stets einwandfrei. Das einzige was sich unterscheidet ist die überaus aufgestellte Bedienung und der Preis der nur halb so hoch ist wie beim Bäcker. Kurz: Super Idee, unterstützenswert, erst noch günstig und besonders gut :)

As an American whom recently moved to Switzerland I had no idea what any of the desserts were and was quite amazed with how expensive everything was. Coming across this place was a huge culture saver. They take goods that the bakeries no longer can sell then sell it for cheaper. It still tastes just as amazing as if you brought a fresh pastry home and left it in the fridge for dessert that night.
Walk in, see something pretty, try it and don’t feel guilty. If you’re looking to explore flavors come here and try it then if you like it buy the fresher (and more expensive) version later.

Great value and a decent selection. This place was a lifesaver for me when I was running out of money.

Un superbe concept qui a commencé à Zurich il y a deux ans et s’est étendu (mais seulement en Suisse-​alémanique malheureusement) à Berne et Winterthour. Äss-​Bar est une boulangerie qui vend pâtisseries, pain, gâteaux, sandwiches, viennoiseries et autres douceurs, le tout frais du jour d’avant! Ils se sont associés avec diverses très bonnes boulangeries de la ville et vont récupérer les invendus pour les vendre à des prix incroyablement bas le lendemain dans leurs magasins. Très beaux choix de produits divers et variés, le tout très bon et à tout petit prix. Des fois que vous passeriez de l’autre côté de la Sarine, cela vaut la peine d’y faire un tour !

ist einfach super dass es sowas gibt, und erst noch mitten in der altstadt. war schon ein paar mal da und habe mich zugegeben jeweils vor allem auf die deserts gestürzt — da merkt man nämlich überhaupt nicht ob die von heute oder von gestern sind. und falls doch, kein problem. ich bin schliesslich auch von gestern…
auf jeden fall: sehr empfehlenswert.

I totally love the idea of this store! Since I’m not a big fan of throwing food away, I’m thrilled to see people actually doing something against it. This store sells bread, sandwiches, pastries and more that was freshly made yesterday. They get the food first thing in the morning from 9 different bakeries and then offer it in their store for half the price! If you’re wondering where I know this from, it’s because the owner told us so and was very talkative and friendly while we ordered our lunch. It’s a great place to eat when your low on cash because since everything’s so cheap, you can buy as many variations and desserts as you want. I would definitely recommend this place, although with certain pastries you notice that the dough isn’t as fresh anymore (nevertheless it’s still delicious).

I don’t know exactely why people expect daily fresh food in bakerys. Mostly you don’t eat it at the same day anyway. Therefore I like the idea. Most things are one or two Franks. An ideal place for a snack in Niederdörfli.

What a name. What a deceiving name. Among the shops near the part of town, Ass Bar stands out. Not only for its name, but also the bright blue logo.
Thanks to Dennis M’s post I knew what this shop was about. Today I got a hazelnut croissant and a sandwich with ham, hard boiled egg, and pickles for CHF 4.50. Cheap, tasty and filling. This is a good alternative if you’re budget dictates cooking yourself, but you don’t have a kitchen.
Like Dennis M was saying, the bread might be a bit dry. My ham had a small iridescent portion. Still good, still a nice concept.

Vorgestern war die Äss-​Bar Thema in 10vor10 und siehe da: Es kommen plötzlich mehr Neukunden und Neugierige, auch viele Touristen. Ich hoffe, dass Zürich nicht zu reich für so ein vorbildliches Sparprogramm ist! Ich werde nach Kräften bei Euch einkaufen, um das Geschäft zum Laufen zu bringen. Meine Vision: Bald steht Ihr im Lonely Planet und alle grösseren Städte der Schweiz wollen eine Äss-​Bar-​Filiale!!!

Die Nussschnecke war frisch, war die echt von gestern? Und die Nordseekruste ist ein Vollkornbrot, wie wir Deutschen und unsere Darmflora es nun mal brauchen ;-)
Das Teilchen habe ich gleich mit einem Café Latte aus dem Kühlschrank verputzt — voll lecker — und nebenbei den charmanten und auskunftsfreudigen Geschäftsführer befragt. Sie arbeiten mit foodwaste zusammen (
), das Ganze hat also nicht nur Hand und Fuss, sondern auch einen wissenschaftlichen Hintergrund.
Wie cool ist das denn?

Hier kannst Du Gutes tun, Backwaren schnabulieren und gleichzeitig Deinen Geldbeutel schonen.
Frisch von gestern heisst das Motto und das wird auch gelebt: ein Team von motivierten Leuten sammelt unverkaufte Ware bei Bäckereien ein und verkauft die in der Äss Bar.
Ein ambitiöses Projekt gegen Food Waste, das es zu unterstützen gilt.
Die Backware wird reduziert angeboten und schmeckt natürlich immer noch gut. Die Produkte sind ja schliesslich auch erst von gestern.
Ein Nussgipfel (1.-), ein rundes 10 cm Rhabarbertörtchen (2.-) und ein grosser Becher Süssmost kosten grad mal schlappe 6.-
Es gibt auch Sandwiches, unzählige kleine süsse Leckereien und Brot.
Getränke gibt’s in der Selbstbedienung alles à 3.- Nespresso Café, Tee und — sehr lobenswert– gratis Hahnenwasser.
Tolles Konzept dass wohl wenig Gewinn abwirft, also kommt und überzeugt euch von dieser guten Idee und kauft was.

Everything above cost me 6.50 CHF causing my brows to rise in astonishment… 6.50 is what I would pay to use a toilet in Zurich — so how is this possible? Some things are better unsaid so I hastily paid and scurried my ass out of there! I merrily skipped home dreaming about fresh pastries, that were basically free, and hurried upstairs to take some photos for Unilocal.After the photoshoot, I quickly shoved the chicken curry toast in my mouth in hopes to stop the grumbling and griping from my already hungry stomach.
Nom nom nom… Nom?
Hmmm… it’s ok but a little on the stale side…
Next I popped that fried ball into my mouth and a couple of bites later… ???
Hmmmmmmmmmm… This also is slightly stale…
I then diverted my attention over to the picture perfect sandwich. Each layer of roast beef was placed with perfect proportion to the rest of the bread and decorative greens. I placed it next to the window seal and admired its perfection as it sparkled in the sunlight. THIS is going to be a wonderful piece of heaven, I concluded as I grabbed the buns and eagerly placed them into my already watering mouth.

In a blind and hungry rage, I tossed the disappointing sandwich to the side of my plate and opened up my laptop. «I’m SO going to smack this ass up with two stars on Unilocal for feeding me items that tasted like they are from yesterday!!» Logging in, I noticed the high ratings and after visiting their website… it would seem that the one who is the ass is not them… but ME!!!
Ass Bar serves fresh food from yesterday. It’s their motto and had I been able to read German, I would have realized this from the sign outside. These guys are taking a green step forward to reduce daily waste from nearby bakeries to serve previous day goodies at a fraction of the price. Awwwwwwww cute! Reading this with now large almost teary animé eyes, I’m giving them four stars! For one day-​matured, it’s just what you would expect and at a good price. If I’m in the area looking for a quick cheap bite, I’ll be back for some more ass!!!
