I wasn’t so sure about this place at first — it seemed a little bougie, a little too-new, too-square, too… something. I mean, anyplace deploying Helvetica that large on its façade is just begging for a surly hipster clientele. But, not one to let my judgey nature get the better of me, I gave it a try anyway. And whaddaya know, this place is the bee’s knees! Their menu is limited, which as a LIbra I appreciate, and vegan, which as an animal-loving health nut, I also appreciate. Furthermore — I went here with my carnivore friend and he was 100% satisfied with his Southern BBQ Bowl — a tall order for your typical vegan fare. As for me, I loved my Portland Bowl — aptly named and aptly served by a scruffy dude with earlobe plugs, who was uncharacteristically(for PDX servers, anyway) friendly and welcoming. They have juice, too, if you’re into that kind of thing — but the place didn’t reek overwhelmingly of wheatgrass or overwhelm me with the incessant whiny whir of blenders going at warp speed. 10/10, I’m taking my mom here next time she’s in town.

I walked a lot to get to this place since I was very excited about their menu. I had the kombucha on tap, shared the oatmeal bowl and ate the whole Bangkok bowl on my own. It was delicious. The oatmeal I’m going to try to recreate at home, hadn’t eaten such a good oatmeal in a while. The Bangkok bowl I wish I could eat every day for the rest of my life. Very nice and clean place. I’d definitely come back here when in Portland.

great smoothies and decent bowls. However, neither of our bowls had avocado because they said they ran out(that’s bad business to not keep supplies). But to top it off, not only did the person working behind the counter put some in hers, but the next customers got some. She claims one was over-ripe, and one wasn’t quite ripe enough. How about offer that as an option at least, clearly it was good enough for you to eat and serve other customers. Also I found the music playing in the background to be overly loud and annoying.

Sooo I had a Bangkok bowl but it made my whole terrible day better, especially because it was combined with 90’s/00’s R&B played at a decently audible volume. Every 5-star review on here is 100% correct. Canteen will Always Be My Baby.

If you’re ever feeling sluggish bc of all the crap you’ve been eating, come here and you’ll leave feeling healthy AF! Hahaha Stopped by Canteen and picked up a Sunrise bowl and a Post Standard. Post Standard consists of apple, lemon, ginger, carrot, beet and I requested cucumber and they gladly included. Wow, this was off the wall good and the ginger & lemon stood out. The Sunrise bowl is a masterpiece in terms of presentation and taste. The granola was crunchy, the Fiji apples and strawberries with a dash of cinnamon were fresh and good and this was all topped with their blended berries and bananas which was insanely good… wow, I’ll be dreaming of this bowl. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but well worth it. Oh, and their bathroom is a total trip… see for yourself hahahahaha

Simple, clean, fresh food. Got the taco bowl based on several recommendations. It did not disappoint! I’ll be back again soon! It has the perfect amount of spice!

I’ve only been here once but I need an excuse to get across the river and go back. Their taco salad bowl was delicious; the walnut taco«meat» was spiced perfectly and it was all so succulent. I also had the«Orange One» smoothie. It was delicious, like an orange creamsicle in smoothie form. It was so hard to believe it was dairy free, it was so creamy.

I’m sad to write this update because when we first tried Canteen a year or so ago, we loved it! However, either the food had gone a bit downhill or I just have more restaurants to compare it to. The tempeh in one of the bowls was under-seasoned and the soy curls in the other bowl weren’t cooked properly in my opinion– too soggy. The last time we ate here, we were blown away by flavors, but we didn’t feel that way this time. With a few changes, however, I feel the food could be really good.

Bowls were delicious, good flavor and hearty portions. Love that there is outside seating. Staff was ho-hum, not the most friendly or welcoming vibe, but feels like more of a take-out spot anyway, so maybe it’s more about the speedy interactions — it’s listed as «hipster» so that also makes sense. I’d grab something to go if I was in the area.

Packed with mouth quenching flavor; this place’s smoothies are to die for! We had the tropical green 16oz and we could only wish they made a 64oz size b/c they are that good. We can’t wait to try something, anything else here! They have really fast service and the workers are super nice and very welcoming. There’s a bunch of stumps outside for you to kick it on. Parking is really non existent since just about any parking we saw was for other establishments and clearly marked as so. One store even had«not canteen parking» in the window.

Best bowls in town. Let’s be honest, it’s all about the sauce when it comes to vegan rice bowls. They are sauce masters. The NW secret sauce is to die for — a creamy cashew based sauce that tastes nutty, cheesy, and so fresh. You’ve gotta try the Portland Bowl. I never liked tempeh that much but they do it right. The Bangkok Bowl is another must if you like a little spicy and thai curry flavors. The red curry thai peanut coconut sauce is amazing. All of the veggies and rice soak it all up, making every bite burst with flavor. The kimchi adds a nice tanginess to the rich sauce. Whether you are vegan or not, try these bowls!

I dig this little spot. It’s super cozy with a tasty vegan menu and juices/smoothies. It’s the perfect place to hit after a workout or in the morning. I ordered the walnut taco salad which was amazing and perfectly spiced. I did notice about halfway through I did not have avocado on the salad which was on the menu. I was informed that the avocados weren’t ripe enough, understandable but still a bummer. I landed on the taco bowl over the Portland bowl based on avocado alone. However, I was more than satisfied so just more of a reason to come back and try everything else on the menu. Without question I left sated and happy. A lot of great beer on tap as well if you need a happy libation.

Love Canteen! I can’t get enough of the Maca and Friends smoothie and the Portland Bowl. I come here at least once a week. Minus one star for the too-cool-for-school vibe of the kids behind the counter. I know not to take it personally though based on other reviews. :-)

I really like the Walnut taco salad. I’m not sure how they make the walnut taco crumbles, but they’re great and a fun addition to a salad. I came here yesterday night to try the Sunrise Bowl but I was sad to find that they only serve them until noon. I also tried the Apple Ginger Greens which is really refreshing. If you’re a fan of ginger like I am, you’ll like it.

I didn’t know what I was ordering to tell you truth, but the experience was excellent. I would go again. I ordered the Southern Bowl and added avocado. The bowl was a very fair portion that left me totally full. Flavor was excellent. Also had a juice that was very good, but maybe it was watered down a tab too much. Quality was excellent without a doubt. Worth a try and it won’t disappoint.

The only juice bar we came across while in Portland. Love the design of Canteen! It’s on the corner of the street, def can’t miss it. The employees were super chill :) Ah I forgot what I ordered but it had beets in it. I thought it could have been stronger Cus I could barely taste any ginger… But then again I’m not even sure if I added extra. Could be my fault ;) Recommend!

+ super close to my work + love the look both inside/out + clean/crisp/just feels fresh the moment you walk in + delicious drinks — i never feel super welcomed when coming in. i almost feel as if im bothering them with my presence(but i feel that way 24⁄7 so maybe its just me). lately ive been coming by once a week on a break from work, but as it gets warmer i’ll probably come by more often!

Canteen is the best way to apologize to your body after a weekend of tequila and beer in the 90º heat. Trendy ambiance, trendy staff, air-conditioning(most importantly). They have house-made, rotating kombucha on tap. For the record, St. John’s Wort kombucha actually tastes pretty darn amazing. Their $ 8 Bangkok Bowl is surprising filling. It consists of avocado curry & red curry peanut sauce, long brown rice, aduki beans, broccoli, red cabbage, kimchi, and black sesame seeds. It took them no time to whip one up to-go. The peanut sauce and kimchi combo is remarkable. Thanks, Canteen! –my body
