great food, great service. My fave place to go for Sushi. I’ve been there twice and enjoyed my experience both times. Prices we affordable although it wasn’t happy hour. for 3 rolls miso soup and beer it was about $ 45. Can’t be that for some great food and service.

YumO. so far the best sushi bar on 2nd. My boyfriend and i really branched out(for us) and it payed off! we got the hawaiian roll(super fresh), the mango roll(spicy and great) and the Tijuana roll… which blew my mind. it had this spicy wasabi mayo and parsley on it. life changing. The real winner of this dinner was the«Yummy Crisp» appetizer that we ordered. it had this fresh chopped fish on top of a crispy cracker covered in a mayo yogurt sauce. our bill was $ 44 which seams reasonable since we were STUFFED afterwards.

My girlfriend and I go here a few times a month and we LOVE it! Make sure to get there during happy hour though or it gets expensive quick(just like most sushi places) We try different things every time we go and its always delicious… Sit at the bar and you get free food made by the chef.

We decided to start with a cucumber salad that did not taste right at all. Edamame on the house was nice. Our miso soup was served warm and not piping hot like most other Japanese restaurants. Green tea served was traditional with rice and very tasty. We ordered a total of five rolls which were all just ok. Each roll was a couple dollars higer than most other spots. The one with scallops was really terrible and luckily the server took it off the check. One bite and we knew this wasn’t going to get finished! The server was very polite but could’ve checked on us a little more often. Overall? Meh. I’ve experienced better clearly describes my experience at Apengo.

My friend and I happened upon this place on the way to a pizza restaurant, but decided to stop here when we saw the large menu and decent prices. We all know that asian food is already pretty hard to find in Long Beach as it is, and luckily Apengo happens to encompass more than just sushi under one roof. They also have udon dishes which are my absolute favorite Japanese dishes. And they did not disappoint. The interior wasn’t spectacular, but it is something you would expect from a slightly traditional Japanese joint. The service was quick and attentive, and the sushi chef, who I am assuming is the manager, was appropriately boisterous and engaging. I’m a big fan of sushi chefs who not only talk to their customers, but keep them interested and excited in dining with them. Next time I go, it’ll be for happy hour. Japanese beer and sushi can do no wrong for a happy me. All in all, not an amazing experience, but it’s worthy for repeat business. See you again, Mr. Sushi Chef!

It was good… but nothing special. I have been wanting to try this place out because of the name. They use to be Japengo, but because of trademark issues, they had to drop the«J». There is the real Japengo Café in LaJolla that gave them problems. So let me start with the beer. Orion beer is really good. Light but with a nutty flavor. And it came in a BIG bottle. Always a plus. As for the service, the lady, which is the owner’s sister was super friendly and was prompt with the orders. Definitely a plus. Now why I gave it only 3 stars. Lack of the goods and sushi chefs. I suppose it was because we came in on a week night, but I would always expect at least 2 chefs. This place only had one, which is the owner. Now when it came to ordering, I got the answer«we don’t have that today» 3 times! Not the answer I wanted to hear. They didn’t have Squid, Toro and they didn’t have Tempura Ice Cream!!! At least they had Sweet Shrimp which I had 2 orders of and was super fresh, although they could have fried the heads a little more to make it more crispy. So like I said… Good place to go but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary.

Call me a traditionalist. I usually don’t enjoy fusion rolls as they usually consist of something fried rolled up with avocado and smothered in some sweet sauce, which this restaurant serves a lot of. However, I had the chance to come to lunch for some nigiri sushi. A total value. I ordered the lunch sushi combo that comes with 6 pieces of sushi, a choice of spicy tuna roll or California roll and miso soup. Sushi quality is actually pretty decent and the sushi rice had a wonderful flavor and texture. Spicy tuna rolls were humongous. Also received complimentary edamame at the beginning of the meal, a nice touch. All this for under $ 10 before tax and tip. Restaurant has about 2 – 3 tables for outdoor seating. Inside, a sushi bar and a good amount of tables to fit 2 — 3 nice size parties. Service is good, but nothing exceptional, full bar with Sapporo on tap. Good happy hour deals. Overall a great value for lunch. Happy it’s only a walk away. Good sushi for a really good price. Will I return? YES for sure lunch and to take advantage of the Sapporo on tap.

My roommate and I just came here for sake bombs before heading out to bar hop on 2nd street. The service was pretty good, we didn’t have to wait long for someone to come help us. We were in and out in a flash! I will come back to try their sushi sometime!

I don’t eat sushi but I’m willing to try to be more adventurous in my food adventures. I knew I wanted something I’d be okay with eating so the vegetable tempura roll was really good. I tried some of the awesome roll(a special) — baked fish, scallops, avocado, cream cheese. Liked that one a lot. Had my first taste of unagi as well. Was a little scared but it was quite tasty. Just have to get over the whole sea snake thing :) Our waitress was super duper sweet. I’d totally come back here when I’m in the area.

We went here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. The great thing about it was that we can take our pups and sit outside. There wasn’t anything overly special about this place. The sushi was good and pretty fresh, but the rolls were pretty generic. If you are craving sushi and want something good to put in your belly, this is a great place to go. If you are looking for a sushi experience that will blow your mind, this is not necessarily your spot. It was great for lunch though, the Rock N’ Roll and the Spicy Tuna salad were great. We actually got a lot of food and the prices are pretty average for a sushi spot. Oh yea and note… If you want Beer or Sake, you can’t sit outside.

Meh — Rice was old and crumbled when trying to pick up with chopsticks. Seared Albacore was cold and tough. We asked for Miso 3 times and they never brought it — but it appeared on the bill. Fish was not good at all. There are so many other good places in LB — we will be venturing elsewhere.

My stupid boyfriend lured me into this place as a congratulatory surprise dinner for me getting into nursing school. And as planned, the whole night was kind of a fuzzy blur if you know what I mean. Let’s get to the point. My memory of this night is a little unclear, but I distinctly remember some outrageous deal that went like this: Buy 1 bottle of Sake and get the second one for a PENNY. What the heck?! That’s just a recipe for disaster(and yes my friends, it truly was). Now, I don’t remember what time this heavenly happy hour goes on, but I was there on a Thursday night sometime between 7:30 to 11:00, so it’s probably a weeknight special. MAKESURETOHITTHISUP! The rolls were pretty delicious. Forgive me, but I do not remember the exact name of the roll I ordered(I think it was something like, Fat boy roll?), but it was something with tuna on top of spicy tuna. It was very good and had a huge kick. My boyfriend’s Firecracker however, was SERIOUSLY spicy; I think they loaded that thing with sriracha sauce. We also ordered a Sashimi boat to share($ 23) and it too was delicious. Also of importance: the service was pretty spectacular! We were being pretty silly(pounding shot after shot, even throwing in a couple of sake bombs) and they were truly accommodating. The waitress even brought us a brand new pitcher of Sapporo when we realized half way through ours that there was a crack in ours. Awesome! 4 stars! Minus 1 because parking really sucks(right on 2nd street!).

Michael P inspired me to try Apengo one night when the sushi craving hit me. Mostly, I was intrigued by his description of the atmosphere, «full of authentic Japanese ambiance,» it sounded like just what I was looking for. And I have to say Michael hit the nail on the head. I love the way everyone here welcomes you as you enter and wishes you good night on your way out. The dark hues and comfortable seating create a cozy environment that is great for dates, but isn’t so sexy you’re uncomfortable dining with friends. I ordered 2 rolls for my dinner — the Long Beach Roll and the Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll. The spicy Tuna Tempura was just what it sounds like — spicy tuna in a roll covered with tempura and flash fried. It was okay, but nothing overwhelming. The Long Beach Roll on the other hand was delightful. It was spicy tuna covered with avocado and mango and I’m sure I could eat this over and over again. We also shared some edamame and seaweed salads that were good. And the people at my table ordered lots of non-sushi items so there are plenty of Japanese options here for your sushi-squeamish friends.

Blustery, chilly, hungry and nothing sounds better to me today than Udon(soup) from Apengo. Udon(soup) Seafood: Chocked full of shrimps, Green Mussels, Scallops, Calamari, Shallots, Seaweed and a plethora of other mini Seafood Delicacies. Add to that the delicious large Worm Egg Noodles in a broth that required only a dash of seasoning and I’m so there. in Comfort Mode. On the side The Palm Springs Roll: Salmon and spicy Tuna topping a Cucumber and Tomato CA Roll topped ever so lightly with a caramelized sauce. Snack complimentary: Fresh green snow peas for dipping in your soy sauce and then, excavating the pods from within with your tongue(learned that in Japan). I feel great considering I had just come from having a permanent crown put in; this really cleansed my whole system. Twice a month for me and good health too.

Decent. Not fantastic but average. If you are really craving sushi and not feeling like venturing to far or inconvenient places, this place will do. It gets the job done. Everything about the place is «okay» only. Don’t go here if you are looking for amazing sushi or an out-of-this-world dining experience. You will not find either. However, if you are just craving the taste and flavors of sushi, than this will suffice. The service is good. They are accomodating with indecisive diners(like myself) and even impressively, accomodating with late night diners. They don’t get rude or impatient when you are there in their last hour of operation.(I feel like some places are extending that ½ hour period before closing as being a bad time to go somewhere into a full hour).

THEWORST $ 74.00 I EVERSPENT! Crappy sushi chef with an attitude to match, bland wasabi, sushi sucked(it all had this sweet brown sauce to add SOME sort of flavor), thelarge«sake» only had 2 servings per person, and the fish in the cold case at the bar was getting cooked by the blasting sunlight coming through the shades. Very unappealing. The best thing in the house was the Saparro on tap. I will never, ever, go back here again. Not even with a coupon or someone else buying. Yes. It was that bad.

Japengo? Apengo? I don’t know but I kind of like Japengo, I wonder if the J fell out and they just renamed it Apengo, good times… anyway. All I have to say is, HAPPYHOURHAPPYHOURANDHAPPYHOUR. Come here for the happy hour, like I did, 2 dollar pints of Sapporo, I was chugging those things down, YUM! Also cheap/great tasting sushi, what else can you ask for? I only come here for happy hour cuz the prices are great, cmon enjoy the festivities of cheap beer and sushi, its great, its fun. enjoy it man!

Food: Home of the teeny tiny lunch combo. The poster out front looked promising but I was so disappointed when my chicken teriyaki/katsu arrived! Portions were tiny… I finished my plate in less than 2 minutes it seemed! Food was okay but nothing great. Price: The combo was $ 6.95. Yes its cheap but not worth the price! Service: Fast and friendly Atmosphere: I liked the atmosphere in here more than the food Location: Can’t remember much about the location
