I walked over for breakfast after a late night… Hoping the break the monotony of my usual breakfast place I thought I would try something new — Royal Café. It came recommended by a few local friends. I know it was a regular place for Amy Winehouse and Blake to stop in as many can attest to. I always order the same thing. Bacon and egg butty and a cuppa. It may seem REALLY simple but I prefer The Twins Coffee Shop just around the corner.

I used to come here frequently when I first moved to Camden Town. They had a bunch of breakfast sets on a board or written on paper. You could get what was essentially a full English plus tea or coffee for around 3 quid. Food wasn’t the greatest, but man was it cheap. Well I felt like a nice inexpensive warm brekkie this cold January morning, so I figured I’d venture back. …and, I’m kinda dissapointed. They have now adopted those(horrible) standard full color breakfast posters for their breakfast menu(you know, the same one that’s in every corner café). However, they do still have two of their old set menus, albeit costing a quid and change more than they used to. Well, I’m here so let’s give it a go. I ordered set 2, which consisted of 2 rashers, sausage, a fried egg, beans, squeak, toast and coffee for £4.60. I added a side of mushrooms, which I believe brought the total to £5 even. The quality was the same as I remembered it. It’s still relatively in-expensive. Ok, I’ll still give it 3 stars. But a little corner of my soul is still crying knowing it’s not the same as it used to be.

After an early morning escape from Dalston, I crawled off of the Overground and was desperate for breakfast. I wanted tea and toast and eggs and I wanted to be out of the cold. And there, just as I walked out of the station, was Royal Café. A small family run business staffed by a smiling buxom woman accompanied by her child, I got precisely what I was looking for and quickly. Nothing fancy by any means, but cheap and cheerful and a good way to start the day. Apparently there are other who agree, and the other groups who came in while I was there are obviously regulars who were too happy to chat with the cheerful matron between reading pages of their newspaper.
