Managed to book a table online through Open Table for this place whilst on holiday in Brighton. We liked the sound of it even though neither of us had ate Indonesian food before. Thanks to Unilocal Directions & Google Maps we found the place nae bother. It’s quite a small restaurant, with only 3 or 4 tables downstairs and a few more upstairs. I really like the décor(beautiful teal/sea green walls) and everyone that greeted and served us was very friendly indeed. They asked if we dined here before(No) and if we’d eaten Indonesian food before(No), then as we were newbies the lovely lady explained the menu to us including what was their most popular dish(Beef Rendang) and that they had Tasting Plates that included small tasters of a few dishes. For starters we had the fried fresh squid in batter with garlic & ginger and the fried tempe(soya beans) in herby batter & chilli dip ~ both were really delicious(I would happily eat both as main course sized dishes!) and also pretty big for starters. For Mains I opted for one of the Taster Plates, I chose the Nasi Lemak ~ this included the Beef Rendang, chicken satay, a few other dishes & rice. It came with a Sayur Lodeh soup which was absolutely scrummy! I would never think to order a soup in a place like this but it was sooooo good. The Beef Rendang & other dishes were all excellent too; not one that I didn’t like. My boyfriend went for the Ayam Goreng Lengkuas which was slowed cooked, spiced chicken with galangal, deep fried(you can take the boy out of Glasgow… haha!) & served with a lovely salad & soya sauce dip. He said it was really great & it was gone in minutes! We both were pretty stuffed so didn’t opt for a dessert. I must also add the wine I had was also really good(White Zinfandel) and service was swift & unobtrusive. I really liked this place and if we lived local would definitely go back. I notice they also offer take away via Deliveroo(there were quite a few orders that evening going out) so I would recommend that if you can’t manage to snag a table.

Haven’t had Indonesian food in years but a backpacking trip to S.E. exposed me to some of the(then) exotic dishes. Ordered the Nasi Goreng and though I remember the spices to be more pronounced and exotic, the version they have serve here is solidly good. If you’re craving non-Chinese fried rice, try this dish.

Got there early so had the place to ourselves. The waitress was really friendly and helpful, food was great, ordered a lamb and a beef dish with coconut rice and some green beans with garlic. Also had a lovely desert of sweet pancakes with icecream. Would highly recommend it! Food came quickly and waitress was a great help in making our choice of dishes and was always there without hovering or being overbearing. It is a small place and I can imagine it being quite noisy if full, but definitely worth a visit.

Easily the best Southeast Asian cuisine in Brighton — I was actually really surprised to find a restaurant of this caliber and authenticity in Brighton after trying so many lackluster Thai, Chinese, and Japanese places that never warranted even a single return and thought I’d have to restrict any craving for Asian fare to London! We tried the mixed appetizer platter(very delicious) as well as the baked swordfish appetizer wrapped in banana leaf because they were out of the minced grilled swordfish appetizer. While I enjoyed all of them, they were a bit repetitive(all vaguely tasty oily fried things that improved when dipped in various vinegar-soy-sweet-chili sauce) and I would skip them next time to order more variety in main dishes. For our mains we had the fried chicken, the beef rendang, and the squid stuffed with shrimp. The beef rendang was delicious but I did find the portion to be a bit small. The fried chicken absolutely blew my mind — it is fried without actually being breaded — it was amazingly flavourful and I will order it every time I return. The squid was actually very interesting — it really was quite large and stuffed with minced shrimp and then the whole thing was covered with a savory sauce with a fruity edge. It was easily the largest thing we ordered, and the squid was PERFECTLY cooked — tender and not at all chewy. We ordered a side of vegetables with chili as well that turned out to be the same size as the main dishes but half the price, so I would definitely recommend it as an addition to your meal. Sadly rice has to be ordered seperately at the tune of 2 pounds per person, which actually makes this meal add up fast and we found that this really should be more of a three pound sign place rather than two as we ended up paying 28 pounds each. We also ordered 2⁄3 desserts — we had the black rice pudding with coconut which was a delicious combination of savoury and sweet, as well as the fried plantain with their cinnamon ginger ice cream(delicious!), and a trio of their fruit ice creams which included a delicious passionfruit and an unusual jackfruit flavour(I’m not personally a fan of jackfruit, but you’ll love it if you are!). My last bit of advice is to absolutely skip the set menus. We were offerred one that was 25 pounds per person and had nowhere near as much food as we ordered above for the 28 per person! I will definitely be back. I wanted to go back the very next day but the price will need to moderate my consumption haha.

We ate at Warung Tujuh after picking the place completely at random. Didn’t we win a watch! Quite definitely the best Indonesian food I’ve ever had(not as rare in the Netherlands than the UK) and everything we ordered was excellent. The Beef Rendang was especially excellent. The waiting girl was great too, when she found out we liked a bit of spice she took it on herself to get some chillies and sauces to accompany our meals.

Food excellent; service cheerful, patient, and attentive. Our party of eight had two bottles of wine, appetizer platters, nine main dishes, rice, and three desserts – happily replete for just under £25 pp. Standout dishes: the grilled lamb, the fried chicken, and the cinnamon-ginger ice cream.

Second time there and food was excellent again. We were in Brighton with friends to see Russell Brand at the Brighton centre and after our starter realised that we had run out of time and had to go. Our main course arrived at the same time but the staff jumped into action taking our food back to the kitchen agreeing that we could return later to finish our meal. Two hours later we returned, and our food served once again miraculously still delicious and all with big smiles from the staff. All in all, very well managed and we will definitely return

I haven’t tried much Indonesian food so I was excited when I came here for a late lunch a few weeks ago. It was empty aside from the four of us dining together. We shared Cumi Cumi Goreng Tepung(fried squid) to start, which was good, but the chilli sauce it was served with was bland. For mains I tried Gule Kambing, which was a delicious, tender lamb stew that was described as being garnished with fried shallots & spring onions on the menu, but ours had none. This was my favourite dish of the meal. I also tried the Ikan Balado, a pan fried sea bream fillet with a chilli sauce, was very flavourful but a little dry. Everything was really nicely presented and the guy serving us was friendly. The food was decent but nothing really wowed me, for the price I would have expected the food to be a lot better. When we were finishing our lunch a delivery arrived which they unpacked next to us in the restaurant, this made me feel a little rushed. It seems from the other reviews maybe we caught them on an off day? But because of the lack of atmosphere and only okay food, I don’t think I’ll be back.

Warung Tujuh(Street Food No.7) is a fantastic little Indonesian restaurant in the Laines. It is situated over three floors but I have only ever been seated on the ground floor. I have been here twice now and on both occasion the food has been very good. This is probably the only place in Brighton that does Indonesian food — for that reason, the menu can be very confusing at first glance, as the dishes are ones that I don’t instantly recognise and it can take a while to decipher. It’s always more interesting though, when you are not sure exactly what you have ordered! Interesting fact — there are over 17,000 islands that make up the archipelago of Indonesia. I find this quite astonishing and its explains why this cuisine can be so varied. The menu tries to take influences from various parts of Indonesia and states where each dish originated which I find interesting. The slightly disconcerting aspect of this restaurant is that it is run by English people, and all the wait staff are English(or European). I have never seen the kitchen staff, but in my head I picture them as being Indonesian, just for some level of authenticity. That said, the wait staff do appear to be very knowledgeable about the food they are serving so this instills confidence. On my first visit I tried both of the lamb dishes — the kambing bakar and the gule kambing. Both of which were tasty as far as I can recall. On my latest visit, I tried both swordfish starters — one was a Balinese style of sate, minced swordfish grilled on stick of lemongrass. The second, my favourite, was a Kalimantan recipe — swordfish with mixed spiced, wrapped in banana leaf and then grilled. The flavours here were delicate and aromatic, and the fish stayed more moist, being cooked in the leaf. For main I chose the sambal udang — tiger prawns cooked in a perfectly spiced sauce, with an accompaniment of coconut rice. I even made room for a shared pud — battered plantain served with Cinnamon and ginger ice cream. I would come back for the ice cream alone! It’s a little pricey compared to other East Asian eateries but it makes a pleasant change from the usual Thai, Chinese, Curry options scattered across Brighton.

Authentic Indonesian food! Being not only a foodie but also born into an Indonesian family, I was sceptical about giving this place a go. But I was not disappointed what a find! Tucked away in a little side street off East Street, locals and tourists are treated to a real taste of Indonesia. To my relief, the chefs are from Bali and Sumatra and not from some other Asian country assuming they can use their transferrable skills on just any cuisine. I had a beautifully arranged Nasi Campur that I can only recommend. Will definitely be back!

I stumbled upon this place after getting some tea from Mock Turtle. At first, I was trying to read the menu and I thought what kind of food is this? Then I figured it was Indonesian or Malaysian of some kind(I saw Mi Goreng on the menu). Upon entrance, I was greeted by the staff(I always feel weird when white people greet me at Asian restaurants but this is in England so I guess that can’t be helped lol). Walked up to the third floor since most tables were booked(?). In an intimate setting with just us two on the floor(LOL), we ordered Mi Goreng. Interestingly enough, the food ascended from this mini elevator machine thing that I’ve come across a couple times in Brighton. The dish was quite good! I was wary because the place looked all fancy with wine and such, but I guess that’s just how it is. The chefs are probably all Asian LOL. The noodles were cooked well with chicken, prawns and various veggies. At first, it didn’t seem like much, but they pack it in quite well. I’ll be back again to try the Nasi(?) Goreng. Fair price, good food, good service. I’d give it 4.5 stars, but I just don’t have enough Indonesian food experience to base off of. Till then, 4 stars :) BTW, I hate the toilet door here. It took some effort to get in and out of. My friend was chuckling the whole time because it seemed like I was stuck in there.

Very tasty and authentic Indonesian food. Good value main courses and I agree that they are substantial enough to not need the small starter. I had local mackerel on my visit. Perfectly cooked in a spicy sauce, served with boiled rice. It was tasty without being too hot. Side dish of dark veggies was really good. Under 25 quid including a glass if wine & good service. Recommended!

A really nice place. The main courses were both interesting and tasty. Service was friendly and the decour was nice. Prices are good(they do an express lunch which seems like a great deal but I can’t speak for the quality of it as I havent tried it). It is definetely worth a visit. I spent 2 weeks in Bali last winter, a place where there isnt much variety in the cuisine so that after 2 weeks of it for lunch and dinner you get abit sick of it, so I was a bit causitious about trying out and indonesian restaurant in the UK. But I thought I’d give it a go after seeing a couple of reviews online as I’m always looking for nice new places in brighton. And I was pleasantly suprised, not only does this place do great food but they have tailored it really well to fit an english palate and style of dining. The food is definetely indonesian but has a lot more depth of flavour than the usual tourist fair I got used to on holiday. My girlfriend and I had a brown noodle dish and a gado gado(vegitables with peanut sauce) to share, both of which I reccommend. The menu is sizeable, though options are more limited if you are veggy(but I’ve learnt to expect that from most places). I’d like to see them offer some of the meat main course dishes with either tofu or tempe(a bean cake they make in indonesia) as this would greatly improve the options for veggies(which can only be good for business in brighton). The starters were a little small for the price but I guess that is similar in a lot of place. I’d suggest saving a few pounds and just getting the mains which are decently sized portions. One great thing is that the dishes really stand out against other similar places; before this I’d never even heard of an indonesian restuarant in the UK. It is distinctively different from your run of the mill thai or chinese place and it certainly stands on it’s own feet when it comes to the food. I would thouroughly recommend it if you are looking for some decent, different oriental food.

Wow! I had no idea what to expect from Brighton’s culinary scene but between this place and Rasa, I found myself wishing I could extend my stay by a few more days just so that I could eat more! Had the Ikan Bumbu Bali and the Gule Kambing, with sides of rice and green beans. All of it was amazing. A lemongrass and ginger pressé was the perfect accompaniment, too. I hope I find an Indonesian restaurant this good here in NY, because I miss the food already!

Although some friends came here and said the service was poor, I’ve been twice now and it’s been great so… This place seems to be getting busier now, with downstairs full midweek and deservedly so. It’s small but with modern clean furnishing and slighly over-bright lighting(bring sunglasses if you’re a sensitive flower like me). The food is of fairly consistent quality, with many dishes being excellent to amazing(the lamb and potato cake, and the squid starters, and the grilled lamb steak and prawn mains, and the green beans) and others being just good but not amazing(beef rendang, java lamb curry). The flavours of the former category are just flipping gorgeous and occasionally complex. If you’re ordering white wine(and I recommend this for Indonesian food, it seems to sit better than red or beer) ask for a really cold bottle — on both occasions it was cold but not really properly chilled. Someone on another review complained about the location, but I like it. It’s slightly off the main drag so you don’t have hen parties screeching past the window but still in the centre of town. And you can watch cars pulling into the carpark of the casino opposite and try to guess how much money they’re going to lose based on the quality of their vehicle.

Believe everything good you read about this place. Makes me wish I lived in Brighton! We came on a Tuesday evening and it was quiet, but it is such a cosy place and the staff & owner were so welcoming that we felt really relaxed and comfortable. We shared the sate platter to start and then each took a rice table dish(Nasi Campur and Nasi Lemak) for the main course. These are basically taster platter with small portions of many of the menu dishes served with rice. The plates were generous and all the dishes were delicious. I especially liked the beef rendang and the green beans(tumis tempur). Beverage-wise we had 2 tiger beers and 2 coffees and it came to £52 which included a 10% service charge. Excellent value and a real find.

We stumbled across this little restaurant during our day trip to Brighton. I never imagined to be eating Indonesian food in Brighton when I’ve hardly ever in London where I live. I’m Indonesian born and bred and have to say although this is not 100% authentic, the dishes I tried were pretty good. Waitresses on duty were very friendly and I discovered the owner is Indonesian with the chefs being Indonesian as well. They have a lunch set menu for £7 for two courses. My friend had chicken satay(2pcs)-a bit small but tasty and soto ayam(best dish we tried that day). They also have the usual nasi goreng, etc. I ordered ala carte — bakwan jagung(corn fritters) and sambal tempe goreng(fried tempe with anchovies, chili and peanuts). Bakwan jagung was not bad but not what I expected. Here they serve it with kecap manis, sweet chili sauce sprinkled with spring onion. I’d go back again to try some other dishes :)

This is a great choice if you’re looking for fresh, authentic Indonesian cuisine. The staff here are really amiable and the atmosphere is very relaxed and informal. The interior design is simple and bright, probably because the owners were going for a very laid back feel just like the street vendors in Indonesia itself(in fact that’s what the name Warung means). Most of the dishes have been sampled in here by my group of friends — we’ve exchanged notes — and there wasn’t one bad comment. The same things were repeated: incredibly aromatic, incredibly fresh and very traditional. Try the Ikan Panggang(grilled fish with a mild aromatic coconut based sauce, £8.95) or if you’re into beef the Rendang Daging(Sumatran dish made from slowly cooking beef in coconut milk and spices, £8.50). If you don’t know much about this cuisine, Warung Tujuh is a great place to start.
