This pub has a good location near the seafront in Rottingdean. It strikes me as a good place to watch the sun go down you’ll certainly have time as the service displays all the speed of a sedated sloth. I ordered a toasted cheese and ham sandwich at lunchtime today not exactly a culinary challenge, but by the time it was delivered my stomach thought my throat had been cut. The accompanying salad was weird, a farrago of limp lettuce and tomatoes tarted up with mixed herbs. The beer(Harveys for real ale fans) is fine but if you come to eat you run the risk of being ratted by the time your dish is delivered.

A perfect medium between pub and restaurant. I was taken here after helping someone repair their fence. I use the term«helping» loosely. All I did was hold the wood in place, and the other guys did all the work. Regardless of my limited role in helping repair that fence, a group of us were taken to The Coach House as a thank you. This is a large place, with seating both upstairs and down. They have a great selection of beers and wines to choose from, and their menu is sizable as well. It’s traditional pub food served in hefty portions, and quite delicious. My hands were a bit mangled due to splinters, but the ambiance of The Coach House(especially on a bright day), made me forget about the multitude of splinters, and I was there to simply enjoy a good meal after a hard day’s work.

The previous review misses the point of the Coach House, which is to deliver reasonable beer, served by decent staff, which you then drink on the west facing balcony looking towards the sea(Brighton and over to Worthing) as the sun sets in the summer. Food’s ok(fresh fish a staple), reasonable wine, fair selection of beers including well treated Harveys.

Pub in Rottingdean, Sussex, with partial sea views. A decent food menu, and some real ale. The main bar/dining area is on the ground floor. Upstairs is an additional dining area. When I last visited in March 2008, I had a very good meal for £6.75 — breaded plaice(that I think had been grilled), with some acceptable chips and side salad. The real ales they had were Prospect’s Old(£2.80), Prospect’s Iron Horse, and Harveys. Piped music is just standard pop, but at a low volume. They seem to have the TV switched permanently on to sports channels — a little intrusive. Discarded newspapers(available on a dedicated table) include the Mail and the Times. The most bizarre thing is that they close at 3 p.m. — on a Saturday in spring! They simply lock the door and turn people away. However, the service and attitude is otherwise good. The gents’ toilet(upstairs, hidden to the left of the ladies’) is cramped but otherwise OK.
