There are a number of better options for a curry in Brighton than Kemp Spices, the service and the food can best be described as average. When we first sat down it was actually too cold to take our coats off — we mentioned this to the waiter and he explained that they had turned the heating off as the restaurant had got too hot but had now switched it back on again and it would heat up quickly — unfortunately, although I was able to remove my coat, it was still pretty chilly for the duration of the meal. We ordered 4 popadoms to start but unfortunately only got three. The dips were also a bit hit and miss — there was a tasty garlic tomato dip, raw onions and a mint yogurt dip that was such a lurid shade of yellow it was quite off-putting. For the main course, both my friend and I went for one of the Chef’s Recommendation. I chose the lamb masuhuri and my friend for the lamb rezala. Both dishes tasted remarkably similar, besides the fact mine had fresh spinach on top and the lamb was quite tough in both dishes. I also heard another table comment that their dish tasted more Italian than Indian! The service was ok, it was fairly quiet when we were there but it was still hard to attract their attention on occasion. We declined a pudding which were all brought in freezer specials and looked particularly appetising. Overall, it was a little disappointing and I will seek an alternative option for my next Indian meal.

Kemp Spices has all the makings of success: great shop design from the outside, great Kemp Town location and a lovely husband and wife team who are friendly and will adjust the tempurature of the dishes to your palate. However, the quality does fall a little short which is a shame because although they’re probably busy, they could be doing a lot more business. The menu is pretty diverse, including tandoori, sali jardaloo, garlic chilli chicken and masuhuri. The portions are a good size, yet the food lacks punch and the meat could be more tender, the ingredients fresher. All the same, it was filling and the atmosphere was lovely.

I live around the corner from this place. My family came down from Kent and we went there to celebrate a birthday. Never again. People came in, ordered, eat their food, paid and left before we received our starter! I had to scream at the waiting staff! Really embarrassing. Whenever I walk pass now, only the staff sit in there staring up at a big screen TV with football on it. Not what you want(in my opinion) when you’re out dining!
