A gay bar/hotel/sauna right on the seafront in Brighton. This use to be a really popular bar but we was there for Brighton Pride and it was practically dead, the terrace used to be full every night of Pride, We was there having a few drinks on the friday evening and it has lost the atmosphere and the people it use to attract, There dosnt seem to be many tables and chairs anymore and the terrace is looking tired. We moved onto Legends after the Amsterdam where we had a great time.

The staff have always been very curteous and friendly to me, despite me not being one of the ‘typical gay guys’ who frequent the place. The food is also very tasty — don’t expect anything too unusual, but if you like typical pub food only to a higher standard than what you usually would expect, then you certainly won’t be disappointed. Their kitchen also has a 5 star rating for food hygiene and ‘clean’ is one of the first attributes which comes to my mind when I think of the Amsterdam. True, it can be a bit sterile considering the lack of decoration, but then it is mostly the crowd which makes the ambiente rather than the deco and for those who feel comfortable with a mainly male clientel shouldn’t be disappointed by the company they find themselves surrounded by. I haven’t seen any of the rooms but know that the Amsterdam is very popular amongst gay men and couples who come to visit Brighton and I expect them to be at the same high standard as the hotel bar. I once had the pleasure to visit the sauna as it was rented by a charitable organisation and opened for non-male visitors, and it was an experience which I still cherish and hope to be able to enjoy again! :)

While this is known for being a gay bar, when the sun is out in full Brighton force, Amsterdam is better known for having a terrific outdoor seating area. The Hotel and décor is pretty standard, offering a tasteful but middle of the road style, but as I’ve said, this is most known for being a great place to enjoy the sun. As would be expected at an openly gay bar in Brighton, you’ll find a lot of scantily clad young men trying to gain a tan and perhaps a new man, all of which makes this a lively place to have a drink.

Summer is almost upon us, depending on what time of year you happen to be reading this, and Amsterdam has one of the best sun decks in town. The activity of slowly supping a pint whilst watching the sea and the other people on deck is what Amsterdam is most suitable for. They also serve food, which is pretty straight forward pub food, in case you get peckish. Don’t stuff yourself though because at any second you may decide to nip down to Brighton’s second best sauna which is just below the bar, and it is never a good experience on a full stomach. Back to the bar, I wouldn’t expect any dancing much going on, but you will certainly spot some of Brighton’s drag acts doing a number.

Recently refurbished very comfortable rooms. The terrace is always buzzing and is a great sun trap. Good food at reasonable prices.
