The Old Bell

One star for not letting us in because it’s «full at the moment» and then proceeding to let everyone else after us in.

Don’t bother. Most unfriendly and un helpful place. We came in ready for a good beer and some fish and chips and were met with lukewarm hello and absolutely no enthusiasm. We asked for a beer recommend and were shrugged at. The only reason I give it 2 stars is the bartender ran out after we left to bring us a pair of sunglasses we’d left. Keep walking you will find a lot more places

Three stars because food was tasty but i did’t feel so good after a cuple of hours.
The place is a nice pub, quite clean and a little dark.
The perfect place for a beer, maybe not the best for a lunch.
Anyway it is located in a great position in a touristic square.

Pretty nice place to get a few beers and ~borrelhapjes (snack food) at Rembrandtplein.
I came with a group of friends on a Friday evening, we sat outside by the Utrechtsestraat and spent a couple of hours chatting over three Mixed Plates with cheese fingers, bitterballen, vlammetjes (spicy spring rolls), spring rolls, and small croquettes. Everything was delicious, by the way. As good as fried snack food can be!
The Old Bell also offers vegetarian options, which is great. Not many other bars around Rembrandtplein do that or even have decent food, to be honest — yes, Coco’s Outback, I’m talking to you. The English Pies seemed great, but I didn’t have a chance to taste them yet. Maybe next time (yes, there will be a next time!). Wash everything down with a draught or bottled beer of your choice, and you’re good to go!
The wait staff was attentive and quick enough to come to us, even with a packed bar. I really liked the laid-​back atmosphere of the pub, it seemed less «tourist trap» than the others. It’s the perfect spot if you’re just looking for some beers and decent food.

My boyfriend ordered the ribeye and it was one of the best steaks we’ve ever had! I got the English meat pie and onion soup, also very tasty. Great cozy environment with views of the square.

Old bells ist genau das richtige nach einem stressigem Tag in der Stadt. Hier ist es gemütlich, man kann draußen sitzen. Und die Auswahl an biersorten ist einfach phänomenal. Beste Bier der ganzen Stadt. Und essen kann man hier auch gut. Beispielsweise steak oder Burger. Oder in der Saison sogar lecker Muscheln. Einer meiner Favorit places in Amsterdam.

Um einmal das Fazit schon gleich zu Beginn zu nennen. Das «The Old Bell» ist ein Touristen-​Restaurant in einer Touri-​Gegend in Amsterdam. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger.
Nur durch Zufall und aufgrund Hunger und Durst getrieben kamen wir hier an.
Die Plätze im Aussenbereich wirkten nett und die Speisekarte, die am Eingang angeschlagen war, hatte klassische britische Snacks aufgelistet, wie Fish & Chips und Beefburger.
Der Beefburger war es nun, der uns hier reintrieb.
Ein Platz im draußen war schnell gefunden. Speisekarte und Bier-​Menu noch einmal kurz studiert. Schon war klar, was wir wollten.
Die Dame im Service wirkte eher lustlos und schien auch noch zu frieren. Warum hatte sie auch nicht etwas mehr an als nur ein dünnes Flatterblüschen?!
Die Burger war schnell bestellt und das Pint Amstel ebenso.
Das Bier-​Menü ist wirklich umfangreich. Holländische, belgische und britische Biere dominieren.
Die Getränke kamen schnell, das Essen nach einer kurzen Zeit dann auch.
Optisch sah der Burger wie ein Burger aus. Als Beilagen gab es Fries und einen Salat.
Der Salat war ok, die Pommes aus dem Tiefkühlfach und von jedem Imbiss bekannt und der Burger war durchschnittlich.
Das Fleisch war gut durch. On Top gab es Ketchup, ein paar Zwiebeln und unter dem Patty ein paar Gewürzgurken.
Spannend ist was anderes und von originell müssen wir gar nicht reden.
Nach dem Mahl war man satt, hatte aber nicht das Gefühl, das man wirklich was erlebt hätte. Da ist man wirklich Besseres gewöhnt und gerade auch im Segment Convenience Food gibt es weitaus besser Burger, die zwar TK sind, aber einfach origineller daher kommen.
Flüssige Nahrung ist deshalb im The Old Bell sicher die beste Wahl! Prost! :-)

Zum Biertrinken reichts — vor allem tagsüber :-) die Bedienung ist wenig begeisterungsfähig, jedoch freundlich. Das Essen ist — lagebedingt — meiner Meinung nach keinen Versuch wert…

The least-​douchey bar we could find in the Rembrandtplein area. At night, the whole square is so packed with chavs and gopniks and clubs blaring techno that it seems impossible to find a decent spot to just relax with a good beer. If you can handle cheesy ‘80s music and a middle-​aged crowd, the Old Bell is a decent place to have a few. Good selection of beer (but no Grolsch) and I like that you can order half-​pints. It’s loud and crowded like everything else around there, but still a welcome relief from the alternatives.

Nice Pub at the Rembrandtplein, predestinated for a party warmup. Or you are seated there in the afternoon, when the weather is good to have a look at the crowds walking around. A lot of different kind of beer, dutch and irish ones. We went there for dinner last saturday, too, but I was not impressed. For this price you can have much better meals in the city.

The Old Bell looks sort of like a dive bar from the outside, with it’s «hand painted» menu’s and 1970’s british pub décor. I went in with pub expectations and after eating there I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.
The food was really pretty good (we had a vegetable pie and onion soup) as well as being reasonably priced. The had a draft selection in pint and half pint sizes, which was nice for a late lunch/​early dinner and to try something new.
The service was also very good; the barman was very polite and efficient. They have free wifi (helpful when looking up maps, etc). All in all it was pretty good meal and someplace i’ll go back to again.
