Very nice Indian food even if the spice level is a bit toned down for what j was used to in the uk. Very nice portions and well priced and super tasty. Impeccable service also! Only had mains, chicken tikka tandoori and lamb sag, both delicious!

Taj was incredible! What a great and inviting experience. The staff was very friendly, the food was excellent, and the location was perfect. We had to eat gluten free– and they accommodated us very well. After the meal they served us a free tee and candy. Honestly– price, service, quality– these guys have it all. Visit them.

Very tawdry indian restaurant which would easily scare off more sober customers. The quality is actually really good and the portions abundant but they make sure you pay for both. Unfortunately when I got there the service was somewhat slightly disorganized.

Taj is a excellent Indian restaurant by any measure. The staff is attentive and friendly. The food is fresh and well spiced. During our last visit, we ordered the Taj Special. The menu is well rounded and reasonably priced for the quality and quantity. We had left overs, which the staff happily wrapped up for my breakfast the next day. Be sure to arrive early as seats do fill up quickly at dinner time. This restaurant is located in a trendy neighborhood, De Pijp, but a lot of the diners looked like locals: families with children, young couples, business colleagues. I look forward to my next visit to Taj!

Taj Mahal was the perfect restaurant for a cold and rainy night. The restaurant is warm and inviting and the food was great. It’s been awhile since I’ve had decent indian food and this place did not disappoint. My husband and I ordered 3 vegetarian sides, 2 orders of garlic naan and papadum and it was the perfect amount for the both of us. We finished every dish. The baingan bharta was smokey and creamy, the saag paneer was good and the channa masala was nice. Be forewarned if you’re vegan many of the veg dishes have cream or butter.

Love their food and service! We had Lamb Rogan, Chicken Tandoori, Aloo Gobi, Raita and Onion Nan. It was all very flavorful! And we had Indian tea– also very good. They made us feel very welcomed and wanted us to be happy with our dinner. Very nice experience. We will return!

I went here with my brother on a Friday night. We came quite early, so the place was quite empty. But during the night it quickly filled up and soon the restaurant was really busy. Nonetheless the waiters kept providing excellent service — they asked us several times if we were okay and if the food was good(almost too many times). The food was really good! We ordered a Taj special, so we could try a bit of everything. We weren’t able to finish it all, because there was so much food, although it was really good. I would definitely recommend this place if you fancy Indian food, style, music and service;-) I don’t want to give it 6 stars, because their eager to keep asking us if everything was alright sometimes felt like they were rushing on us. But overall a really nice experience!

Went here because it was rated so high on Unilocal and was the closest Indian food to our hotel. This is equivalent to the«Chilis» or «Applebee’s» of Indian restaurants. We sat down quickly and the staff and service was decent. Our food came out on a normal time line. Our actual meals were basically«ok I’ll eat this but it’s not crazy good.» It was just ok. Not worthy of the 4.5 stars that Unilocal!gave it. Nothing bad happened and nothing was subpar… It just was not outstanding in any way. Will be searching to find a much better Indian restaurant on this trip.

I think this restaurant may have changed ownership. The new name of the restaurant is now simply«Taj» and our experience there was not as good as previous reviewers. First of all, although Unilocal and the restaurant’s web site state that they open at 3PM, when we arrived at 3PM for a late lunch, we were shooed out of the restaurant with the admonition that they do not open until 4PM. So, we had a fruit smoothie at the place across the street(4 stars) to quell our hunger, and then walked around the beautiful neighborhood of Le Pijp to kill time until 4PM. When we arrived promptly at 4, the server was ready to send us away again, but when we informed him that it was now 4PM, he grudgingly agreed that the restaurant was now open(after first pulling out his phone and confirming that it truly was 4:00). Perhaps we should have turned around right then, but we had bicycled all the way across town to try this restaurant, based on it’s exemplary reviews, so we stuck it out. The service was mostly well-meaning but clumsy. The waiter agreed to bring us each a glass of tap water(in addition to beer), which was a plus. We planned to order several vegetarian«side dishes» so that we could try several things, but the waiter assured us they were very small and persuaded(bullied) us into making one of them a «main dish» which is purportedly larger and comes with rice and salad. Well, the«main dish» was barely any larger than the«side dishes», and the salad that came with the main dish was a joke, just a small dish of undressed lettuce and cucumber that looked past its prime, so we felt that we were upsold for no good reason. The food was pretty good, although we’ve certainly had better(to our tastes). The waiter did not ask us how spicy we wanted the food, and as a result the dishes were really not spicy at all. The outside seating of the restaurant on Marie Heinekenplein was very pleasant, but not enough to save a disappointing meal.

My friends and I ordered the samosas, pepper chicken tikka, and the onion bhajee for appetizers. We also ordered the saag paneer, dal makhani, and paneer masala with garlic naans for the main course. All the food was amazing and we were completely stuffed after finishing dinner. Service was great and everything we requested was promptly brought out to us. If anyone wants high-quality and authentic North Indian food in Amsterdam, I highly recommend you visit this establishment.

My husband and I shared the Taj Special for Two and it was way more than we could eat. And I did want to eat it all — authentic, perfectly cooked and presented. Indian tea and ice cream for dessert. Helpful, welcoming staff/owners. Seemed to be a lot of locals eating so it was a community feel with laughter and children playing outside. Lovely dining experience all around. Tip: We ate early and had no trouble but, if you like to eat later, make reservations! Many people were being turned away around 7/7:30 because the restaurant was fully booked.

Met my fiancée by her office for a date night. The food was delicious and the portions of meat very generous. We had the lamb Birriani, the aloo saag and keema naan. We will be back here regularly to try the rest of the menu. The staff was incredibly helpful, attentive and kind. This is clearly a family business, with plenty of attention to detail both in the cuisine, the presentation and the cute décor. All in all a lovely evening. Go here. You’ll thank me!

This was my first visit to the restaurant under its new management(11⁄2012). What a big change– new place settings, silverware /plateware, tables, chairs, chandeliers and even upgraded toilets! New owner is obviously plowing profits back into the place. Food is quite ‘North Indian’ authentic. I started with two black peppery Papadum lentil wafers(recommended) with four chutneys to choose from(tamarind, yogurt-mint, mango and ?). Personal preference– the yogurt-mint had an amazing fresh flavor; keep making these with fresh ingredients! After my appetizer, I ordered Aloo Gobi and a main of Fish Curry; all with mixed vegetable rice(sorry if you were looking for a Naan review). The Aloo Gobi came out with good-sized cauliflower & sliced potatoes. The cauliflower was not too soft(overcooked) nor too crunchy(undercooked). It was a little ‘wet’ though, definitely some gravy left over in the dish. The flavor was mild but tasty, a good counterpoint to the Fish Curry. The Fish Curry on the other hand was a mountain of flavor. I was told by my waiter I must try the ‘Goa Fish Curry’(coconut crème-based) next time as it smooths out the strength of the dish a bit. The white fish that was used was flaky and not overcooked like many places do. With five large chunks in the strong reddish curry, I’m salivating just thinking about it now. The mixed vegetable rice had a few peas in it, nothing special here … it was very shiny, perhaps a lot of ghee(clarified butter) is used in its preparation. Personally, I’d prefer an option of the ghee-rice or steamed rice(more healthy). After this I moved onto dessert where Kulfi was ordered for the table. This good sized dish contained about 8 – 10 pieces of the sweetened stuff with two drops of whipped cream(slagroom) at the ends of the dish. The Kulfi is made in house I was told and it was very creamy and sweet– tasty and recommended. I finished the night with a pot of Indian Chai Tea; wow. This was excellent, I could really taste the spices in it and pulled three full cups from the kettle I was brought; definitely ordering again next time. In summary, this is a great Indian restaurant with a staff that does everything in their power to assist you; even answering questions about places to see while in Amsterdam! Both Dutch & English were routinely heard throughout my time in the restaurant. One last note: spice-adverse individuals may wish to request ‘no-spice’ at the time of ordering. The spiciness level was great for me– lot of flavor not a lot of ‘hot’. PS– Personal request: please continue stocking Spa Mineral water, much better flavor than the Coca-Cola ‘equivalent’ product Chaudfontaine.

Best indian restaurant in Amsterdam? Well, we only tried this one we were here and it was the best Indian I’ve had in years! With already great review on Unilocal,we decided to try this restaurant which was also close to our apartment. We did not have a reservation and we were surprised to see that the restaurant was almost packed, thankfully we had arrived early and we only waited a few minutes a the counter. A traditional indian restaurant with only indian staff, a very detailed menu, and great service. Exquisite food and drinks. If you love spicy, this is it! I was quite happy with my choice of lamb biryani. The meals is served in the center on the table which makes it easier to share. The portions are large so come with a empty stomach if you want to finish your meal! Really a great place for a meal with a very friendly staff.

The managers were extremely warm and welcoming, the servers were also very friendly and made sure we had a good time. The food was great, we chose the tandoori chicken and the chicken curry. It comes in dishes that are put at the center of the table and that you can therefore share with your partner. For this reasons we advise you to take 2 different dishes to try.

Daher unbedingt reservieren bevor man vorbei schaut. Geht auch online! Das Restaurant hat sich übrigens umbenannt: es heißt jetzt nur noch«Taj»

We absolutely loved this place. The atmosphere, food & service was amazing. I’ve had Indian in 5 countries and this is as authentic as It gets. The Vindaloo was spicy but not overly hot. The owner clearly cares and makes a point to see each table. In addition, the value was great. Can’t wait to come in on our next visit to Amsterdam!

We searched for some time to find the«best» Indian restaurant. The stars aligned and we wound up here. And wow, are we thankful to have found this gem. First, the food is great. Had the Aloo Gobi, chicken vindaloo, gain nan, and red wine. All were very, very tasty. Then, the service was great, too. The owner came out to talk with us and we could tell he genuinely cared about our experience & feedback. Lastly, and not least, the atmosphere was nice & it didn’t feel like it was a tourist trap.

I’ve only had takeout from here, and I get the same thing I always order at Indian restaurants: lamb vindaloo, garlic naan, and veggie samosas. They make it perfect every time. The vindaloo is so hot your sinuses will be clear and your tongue might burn off, but it will have died tasting some good quality food. The samosas are crispy but not too crispy, the filling is fresh, and the sauces are a great compliment. The garlic naan is not very garlicky, but I guess you can’t win them all. Bonus: There are often many Indian people eating here who don’t appear to be related to the owner, which I take as a good sign their food is authentic.
