Lust serves a great burger and fries! I used to be a regular when I worked around the corner. They also service nice sandwiches. I always found their food to be very tasty and there are enough healthy options if you don’t want to go for their delicious burger! The staff has always been friendly and a funny thing to know(that might come in handy for some of you guys…) is that one of the chefs rents out a guestroom across the street from the restaurant. It is a spacious room for two guests with a private bathroom and breakfast is served in the room every morning. This is quite a good deal if you think about all the crappy overpriced hotels in the city. Lust also has some outside seating during summer.

Lust, Bust, Rust, Crust, Must, …Thrust? Having a decent sized library of words rhyming with the word ‘lust’, I feel almost compelled to write a review in poem form with my underedumacated third-grader Cat in the Hat-esque writing style. However, be it as this review will pop my Amsterdam Unilocal virginity, I feel like traditional missionary style is most appropriate. Within 1.67 hours of arriving in this stroopwafel and flower filled land called Amsterdam, I found myself sitting outside in a small alley sipping on Brand beer at a quaint and surprisingly non-erotic little place called Lust; known for great hamburgers. Naturally, one might find it peculiar that someone moving from Omaha, Nebraska would come to Dutchie land to eat something that was readily available in obnoxious portion sizes in the U.S. This statement is not so true as my foreign lustful burger experience was justified not once… but twice! During my first excursion, which happened to be around lunch time, my options were appropriately limited: Plain, cheese or lust — burger. The latter of the three can be described as a seasoned burger scandalously clad in creamy naughty cheese, Cadbury egg-like secreting fried egg and artery clogging bacon that glistened in the rare yet welcome sunshine of Amsterdam with saturated fats and cholesterol reducing medicine. Despite my description of this lustful burger, I wussed out and opted for the plain burger for taste research purposes. If you think about it, I could fry a rat and accompany it with optimal portions of cheese, bacon and egg in order to fool anyone! The only way to truly conduct flavor analysis is to experience the naked burger in raw form… so the conclusion? Not bad! The meat seamed to already be flavored and without asking how I wanted it cooked, which seems to be more common here in Dutchie land than in the states, I thought it was cooked juuuuuust right! You know. The perfect balance where the cooked ground beef collapses in shape just enough to secret a beefy liquid that mixed with your own drool ever so lustfully drips down your chin in perfect harmony before the flow is disrupted by your napkin… If you didn’t catch what I’m trying to say… Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! My next experience at Lust could be categorized by both Bust and Must. I had a few co-workers in town and one of them had a finite and limited set of food items which he was able to consume. One request was for a plain hamburger which immediately triggered memories of my first experience at Lust. It was dinner time and as soon as we got our menus, the concerned and confused look on my co-worker’s faces was enough indication to me that there was something severely wrong with the menu… NOBURGERS!!! BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST!!! Almost blinded from embarrassment and panic, I immediately summoned the waitress to beg mercy on my soul and plead to the burger powers to be to allow for one burger exception in exchange for my dignity and pride. No promises could be made, but after five minutes of chef consultation, the happy ginger waitress soulfully(contrary to ginger myth) proclaimed with a smile that burgers CAN be served! Halle-effing-luiah!!! The actual dinner menu was surprisingly upscale so I definitely went rogue and burgerless in exchange for a colorful dinner plate decorated with rosemary cheese crusted chicken, spicy green lentils and baked potato slices to be dipped in duck liver mousse. In other words, nom nom nom! If that wasn’t enough, my co-worker’s meal with three courses comprised of peking duck spicy noodle salad, veal ribs with almond risotto and white chocolate mousse. I can say that we were all pleasantly surprised and Lust has been one of the best places I’ve eaten in Amsterdam so far. Will I wake up at 3:00am from a wet dream about Lust? Probably not. But I would say it is a Lust-Must for people who haven’t experience this gluttonous and stylish piece of Lust in A’dam.

We needed to find a place to eat on our last night in Amsterdam — challenging on a Saturday. Lust was right around the corner from hotel and wasn’t booked. The red décor was a bit overdone but the food was solidly good. The husband had the beef carpaccio to start with and literally left the plate spotlessly clean. I had the goat cheese tower, made of apples, turnips, and cheese, and it was flavorful and interesting. For entrees, he had the guinea fowl with truffled potatoes and I had the spinach pie(came with a delish potato pancake and corn fritter). Overall, a pleasant surprise.
