Best vegetarian meal I have had in Amsterdam. Really. These guys are modest but work with the most fresh and appetising ingredients. Cool and modest design, super low prices, nice people.

Stadskantine… where have you been all my life?! Enter:(sheepish look)…Oh, on my road? I’ve walked by you a thousand times? Right… well I’m glad we finally met in person. You know I loooooooooove a bit o’ quality, wrapped up in a value-for-money bow and De Stadskantine totally delivered tonight! Two hearty, delicious, 3-course meals for under 30 Euros? Sign me up! As it has been described earlier, De Stadskantine is a no-frills, sort-yourself-out, honest-food kind of place. There’s no table service, you need to grab your own silverware and bus your own table but for the price, quality and QUANTITY of the food and generally relaxed vibe of the place, it’s perfect. Tonight featured a delicious cauliflower curry ginger soup — this soup was fantastic. I sort of thought, «Right, they had some cauliflower that was about to go off and they wacked some curry stuff in there to make it interesting.» The flavours were so great, I would have a hard time believing that was the case but if it was, Happiest. Accident. Ever. The mains were also great — Eggplant parmigiana for me and chicken tikka masala for the bf. Both of us were very happy with our dishes. Mine was just layer after layer of delicious eggplant, tomato and cheese, served with a tangy salad and delicious garlic bread! Ed confirmed that this was a solid example of chicken tikka. He’s English so has grown up with some spectacular exposure to curries so don’t take this endorsement lightly! The boy knows about curries! We were so full we nearly forgot about dessert(read: He nearly forgot about dessert). I felt it would be doing the Unilocal community a disservice to NOT partake, despite my attempt to cut back on sweets this month. So, without too much hesitation we collected and dove into our chocolate mousses(meeses?). From a technical aspect these were probably too heavy to qualify as mousse but the flavour?! Oh. My. God. It was a very rich chocolate with a touch of pink pepper, a lovely misting of orange. It was topped with what I think were peanuts and crunched up white chocolate. What ever it was, it rocked my world. It has to be said that each portion was at LEAST the size of 2 of the Gü desserts! I’ve you’ve read this far, I hope you can see why I’m sufficiently impressed. It’s not Michelin star dining, but it’s not supposed to be. I think Stadskantine focusing on doing a few things really well is a good strategy and is just the kind a place all neighbourhoods should be lucky enough to have! I almost feel like I should retire from Unilocal and just eat here every night! :P

Great spot for coffee or lunch. Free wifi so good for working. It’s surrounded by windows so there’s always a window spot. Open atmosphere so you feel you have some personal space. Good sandwiches and reasonable prices.

At night I took a piece of apple pie and a cappuccino and have to admit, that I’ve never had a such bad and tasteless apple pie. Let alone the quality and richness of the cappuccino. Their concept is great but the quality is anything but average.

Just visited stadskantine for a fast dinner. We got ourselves an apple-pie, the veggie dish and the fish-dish two cappuccino’s and a juice. From all, the juice was the winner! The apple-pie was way too dry, the cappuccino’s would be an insult to any Italian. Basically the fish cake, except for the fish were not cooked yet and the flavour was way too basic. Just because this place resembles a cantine, the food shouldnt be undercooked. Its a pitty because my previous visits were quite good. Perhaps next time.

We stopped in here for a quick bite of dessert. I got a brownie and my hubby got the cheesecake. That cheesecake was one of the best I have ever had! It was so creamy and rich. My hubby loved the coffee he ordered as well. They also have free wifi! We didn’t have a full meal, so I can’t award it 5 stars, but it is well on it’s way!

This is a really nice place to relax, reed a book, work and have a nice meal. Meals are cheap and very tasty. Everyday they have 3 dinner options for 8,85 euros: vegetarian, meat or fish. The meals always look pretty and are often mediterranean inspired. There are many seats in the stadskantine and a few outside seats during summer. Great place for cheap dinner!

Good, healthy, honest food. Strait forward, no wishy-washy. A city canteen! Easy place to meet up with friends for a quick coffee or a bite. Or? .have dinner on your own. Feels good in there. No service at the tables, it’s a canteen but the canteen ladies open beers and wines too. And milk! …One thing that surprised me: the flirting!.Still, coming home to my man, is nice. Hahaha! …the flirting that was a good surprise.

In Amsterdam you will find food from all over the world here demonstrated at the markets and restaurants. However, when I first came to Holland I had the same question that most foreigners or tourist posed. What is Dutch cuisine? Well the perfect place for you to sit down and try it out is at De Stadskantine, which is translated into(town canteen). You will find traditional(Dutch food) right at this place for a cheap price. It’s just 8 euros a plate, which you can’t beat anywhere in Amsterdam. We were lucky to find a few seats available in this canteen because the place is always a packed house. I would describe the setting with great long wooden tables and chairs lined up. I really enjoyed eating here, it has an easy going feel to it. I thought the concept was simple and ideal for the Pijp neighborhood and residence. We added this place to our list for eating-out on nights when we were not in the mood to cook but still had a preference for a healthy warm meal. Plus it’s the perfect place if your looking for ways to save when dining out.
