The service here is pretty good, the food is pretty«ok». I wasn’t impressed at all. The place has got a cool atmosphere, and it’s in a great location(has two floors too I think?) and a garden outside. Some other people said there is a cat there in their reviews, I didn’t see anything? :(I don’t think they have it anymore! I had a club sandwich and my bf had a burger, we both thought they were pretty«meh» It attracts a bunch of amsterdam finest hipsters, and more«cool» to go grab some drinks than to go grab some food, imo.

In Amsterdam usually service is slow&rude and usually food is bland of taste and extremely uninspired(tomato soup anyone?). If you take Amsterdam as your starting point, Walem is great! Service is swift and friendly. Food is consistently good, and the menu predictable in a comfortable no frills way. If you take American service as your starting point, then there’s more than enough room for improvement. However, you’re in Amsterdam now, so you might as well enjoy Walem, cause this is as good as canal lunch or dinner is going to get at this price point!

it’s an ok typical dutch restaurante, medium good food, but nothing special. The waiters are young and not so experienced, but very sweet.

This was really more of a 3.5 – we enjoyed our meal here. We were looking for a casual restaurant with healthier options and stumbled upon Walem. The outdoor seating looked really nice, but the inside was a little less spectacular. I ordered the salad with chicken, sweet potatoes and Serrano ham and my husband ordered the couscous salad with fish and mussels. Both were very good – we both thought my salad was slightly better. We were less thrilled with our artichoke appetizer, which lacked flavor(both the artichoke itself and the aioli were under-seasoned). Our waitress was sweet, but very sloooow. She served our salads, and then forgot to come back with silverware for about 5 minutes. All in all, I would recommend this if you’re looking for a lighter, reasonably-priced, and leisurely meal.

Dining solo in a strange city can sometimes feel weird. Not here: this is a must dine stop for solo diners! The host was very friendly and spoke perfect English. He patiently answered my questions about the menu, and I loved my final selections. Fresh, tasty, and a nice atmosphere. Pork satay was perfect. Free wifi was nice too.

Don’t be surprised if a kitty cat jumps on your lap at Café Walem. It’s the resident house cat and not shy at all. In Amsterdam it is common for cafes to have house cats. They are harmless, unless you are allergic of course. Café Walem is a really nice upscale casual restaurant along the canal on Keizersgracht. The décor is a little modern. We walked in without reservations and got a table easily. Service here is friendly and very lax. Don’t eat here if you are in a rush. We started with the rocket carpaccio salad. It was fantastic. Very fresh tasting and lots of beef. Then, a Black Angus burger for him and beef entrecôte for me. It was a protein and refuel day for us. The burger was piled high. It’s definitely one you have to smash down and cut in half to eat. The steak was hefty, juicy, and delicious. It had the right amount of seasoning and the béarnaise sauce was the perfect addition to make it extra special. The vegetables it came with were buttery and had just enough snap. They were not overcooked. For dessert I opted for a simple pear Festini ice pop. Even if it had been in the freezer for awhile(ice crystals be damned) it was still very refreshing. Café Walem seems like a nice neighborhood café. There were plenty of solo diners and a few friends gathering over salads and drinks. Cheers!

Walem executed the food beautifully. Although, I could have given them 5stars for the delectable food, canal-side location/seatting, relax and youthful ambiance inside the restaurant but a bit slow service had dragged it down. As for my food, one of the best burger thus far; I had grilled black angus burger that was cooked to perfection. Juicy, tender and bursting with good flavour. The taste was also enhanced by the other ingredients such as grilled courgette, fresh lettuce, sun dried tomato as well as pancetta, buffalo mozarrella and the secret sauce. It was definitely impressive. My husband on the other hand enjoyed his melted goat cheese, rocket salad, honey, roasted bell pepper, grilled courgette and pecans. Ohhh what a delight it was to see his eyes widened each time he puts a forkful of those salad in his mouth. It truly was gem and should not be missed when in Amsterdam. Ohhh, I heard Walem has a garden seating behind the restaurant. We were did not get a chance to check it out because we heard it the day after we went dined there. Be sure to check it out yourself.

This is our second living room. We come here since 1985. We spend a lot of time here. Know the owners and all the staff. Usually for sunday brunch, but sometimes other days as well. Their terrace is great with nice weather! Love the crowd here. A lot of people from the area, but also a few tourist and people from outside Amsterdam who meet here. Very relaxing atmosphere. Try the juice with beetroot and ginger and the sandwich carpaccio, or grilled vegetables with goat cheese, or hot chicken. Their latte macciato is one of the best in town!
