Poundwise is much smaller than the 2-Euro shop on George’s street, but the idea is the same. Offering random stuff for cheap prices. I find it quite overwhelming to go in here. The range of useful and not-so-useful items, from superglue to headphones and anything in between, makes you either want to run out or dig into the pockets to see how many bargains you can make. That’s exactly what I hate about these kind of shops. I always end up buying some crap I don’t need just because it’s cheap. How can I not buy new kitchen utensils when they costs only € 2? Or a 3-Euro knitted ear-warmer? It’s cold out there you know. Poundwise can be handy when looking for a casual present. Not to say that you should do birthday and Christmas shopping here, but for fun gifts for no particular occasion you’ll have plenty of junk to choose from. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

I don’t know what it is, but I always find myself looking for random odds and ends that I can’t seem to find in any shops. When I’m experiencing these moments of uncertainty I somehow always find my way to Poundwise. In my mind, they’ve got just the kind of hodgepodge that I need and they’d surely have the item I’d want. Each and every time I leave the store empty handed! They do have a weird selection of items, but it never seems to be what I’m looking for! Why Poundwise why must you always lead me on? Whhhhyyyy!!!

Poundwise was a lifesaver when I first moved into Rathmines. We were decorating and didn’t want the hassle of having to shop for all of our cutlery and crockery at once, so down we went to Poundwise and picked up a few bowls, plates, cups and basic cutlery items that were cheap enough for it not to matter if they got thrown off a ladder or covered in paint. They are still in the press and are used more often than the fancier stuff we later bought in Dunnes Home. It’s a small and uncluttered Poundshop, but very well stocked all the same. There’s homewares like those mentioned above, as well as cheap toys, stationary, bike accessories like locks and lights, and lots of discounted chocolate bars and sweets. I picked up a last minute Haloween costume here last weekend for € 2, along with a packet of giant sparklers.

Poundwise is Rathmine’s answer to the pound shop. Its not the best, theres standards in bargin basement shops nowadays as any Euro 2 will attest to. Still handy all the same if u need cheap and tacky junk in hurry. They have a particularly good selection of cheap sweets too. With no parking, credit cards or any kinda of contact details its a little bit trapped in the 80’s. The woman who served me was pretty friendly all the same.
