Voodoo Doughnut Too

I bought two dozen doughnuts– one for my family and one for my friend. Totally worth the effort to haul them back to CA. A few notes:
1) This location is much less crowded than the original location. It’s the same doughnuts so if you don’t care about going to the original and time is an issue, go here instead.
2) I love the maple bacon doughnut bar
3) My kids love the voodoo bubble doughnut– the frosting really tastes like bubble gum
4) I bought the Homer Simpson doughnut for my husband– it is huge
5) They have vegan doughnuts too– just ask which ones
6) You should get the voodoo doughnut, just because…
They also have cute t-​shirts — some men and some women sized– everything is CASH only. There is an ATM machine inside. If you go before 9 AM the line usually isn’t so bad. They don’t sell bottled water (they have a water dispenser) so bring your own bottled water if you need it. They do sell milk and coffee.

More like 2.5 stars. Presentation is definitely good for these donuts — they are brightly colored and they are fresh and doughy. Taste wise though they are really, really sweet. I tried the mango tango, grape ape, maple bacon and captain my captain and out of all of them the only one I really liked was captain my captain. I had really high hopes for mango tango but the sugar coating on top of the fill made it too sweet to eat. The maple bacon was pretty basic and I was overwhelmed by how doughy it was. I really disliked the grape ape, from the grapes smell to the sweet and sour grapes flavor. Although the donuts are very picture worthy they aren’t that good in terms of taste. It’s definitely an experience but it can definitely be skipped.

I’d be honest, this place is just a novelty for me. I visit it as frequent as visiting touristy spots like Crater Lake or the Rose Garden. That being said, I come here only to bring newbies. This location is so much better and you don’t feel claustrophobic. The only downside is Stumptown is not a block away.
The last time I visited here was back in Summer of 2013. What I remembered from my visit was they have Voodoo trucks parked outside and a couple of video games inside the bakery. As for the donuts themselves, they are as Weird as Portland goes. Kind of fun, kind of strange names and flavors. Quite honestly, the maple bacon for me was just alright. But always a great place to take people from out of town to visit.

Jennifer T. and I spent twenty bucks on a Lyft so we can go to Voodoo. $ 20 for a $ 1 doughnut.
Was it worth it? Hell yes.
The locals gave us so much flack for wanting to go here. I don’t care. It was worth every gluttonous bite. I did, however, not realize it was cash only so prepare yourself.
We were warned about the «hour-​long lines» but we came in around nine in the morning, and waited about ten to fifteen minutes. Given, this is Voodoo’s second location so it’s not as popular as their first. Still, we left– doughnuts in hand– seventeen minutes after we stepped in line.
I got the «Captain My Captain» doughnut, and it was heavenly. A plain doughnut with a heaping amount of sugar glaze, Cap’n Crunch, and Crunch Berries sprinkled on top. The actual doughnut portion was light and contained a hint of salt, which created a nice base for the sweeter components. The cereal was still fresh, and the glaze reminded me of the filling used in General Mills’ cereal bars. It was soft, crunchy, sweet and slightly fluffy.
Even though Stan’s Donuts in Chicago still takes the cake for me, I cannot deny my appreciation for the joy and novelty that emanates from Voodoo Doughnut. Moreover, the absolute charm and ridiculousness of each individual doughnut– resting on top of one of their many circular tiers– is the reason why this place is known around the world.
If you go to New Orleans, you get beignets at Café Du Monde. If you go to Milwaukee, you get frozen custard from Leon’s. And if you go to Portland, you get doughnuts from Voodoo. If you want to go here, then you should go here. Ignore the pessimism, and try it out because I bet you dollars to doughnuts that you’ll love the crap out of Voodoo.

When I lived in Eugene I use to go at least twice a week.
I moved back to New York so I haven’t been to voodoo in over a year.
Now that I live in Portland I was ready to go visit my old love.
I didn’t realize how cheap the donuts are, 1.50 for my favorite blueberry cake and 1.25 for those delicious French crullers.
When I entered the smell of delicious donuts filled my nostrils.
The line was only a couple people long and it went fairly quick.
They had some super fancy designed donuts in the case, they almost looked to good to eat.
My favorites are the blueberry cake, rainbow sprinkles, and plain French crueler.
I don’t go for the over the top donuts because they are a little to sweet for me.
The lady who worked there was super friendly and the transaction went fast.
I wish they took credit/​debit because I barely ever have cash on me.
This is a much bigger location and they have a couple of tables that you can sit and enjoy your donuts.

These are just regular donuts topped with sugary chaos and nonsense.
I ordered the vegan ‘Dirty Old Bastard’ (covered in chocolate with crushed Oreos and peanut butter drizzle), as well as a small one covered with M&Ms to share with the bf.
The dirty old bastard was decent enough but the donut base was nothing special. I’ve never had a donut with those toppings before which made it interesting, but it’s like something you’d eat if Will Farell from Elf made you a donut… which is a sugar hurricane in food form. After about an hour I felt sick to my stomach the rest of the night from junk food overload.
The M&M one was nothing special either. But then again, I wasn’t expecting them to be great, just wanted to see what all the fuss was about and now I know and never have to eat one again! Yippee!

Came here with a huge group of about 15 of us. We filled the entire store. Everybody enjoyed their donuts even though it took us forever to get our donuts.
This time I tried the Fruit Loop Donut. It was actually pretty good. Definitely a sugar rush though.

There are a few things that I absolutely love about this place:
1. I have friends who were married here recently. On Halloween. In costume. And it was a total blast.
2. I am in love with the Grape Ape donut. It’s purple and sweet and offers all the carbs (and then some) a body needs to help process a night of bad decisions («Sure, I’ll have another round of shots and a double bourbon ginger ale.»)
3. Their coffee is the closest thing I have found on the west coast that approximates my beloved east coast Dunkin Donuts. Some may see this as an insult, but I mean it with the highest of praise. Drinking anything that reminds me of Dunks floods me with happy memories of being in high school, driving around at all hours on $ 0.89/gallon gas, going nowhere in particular, except to a Dunkin’ Donuts for another sugar and caffeine-​infused booster shot to propel us toward sunrise.
Voodoo Too — you rock. You know it. I know it. I will be back.

The eastern location of the popular voodoo doughnuts, this place is definitely a tourist attraction and somewhere everyone should stop on a visit to Portland! Although it’s always relatively full, we didn’t have to wait in a line too long to get our food (although we did come at midnight).
They have a bunch of really weird flavors, and although all of them are pretty good, I definitely would say this place is more of a novelty doughnut place than a boutique, super soft, delicious doughnut place, but it’s definitely still worth a stop if you’re around the area!

This location is great and better than the original because the line is much shorter. The service was very quick. The line had about 15 people and snaked out the door, but only took about 10 minutes. The Voodoo Doughnut is a classic and should be tried during your first visit. The Portland Cream Doughnut is exactly what it sounds like. Both doughnuts had thick layers of chocolate.

Honestly, I feel like Voodoo Doughnuts was overrated. Certainly there is something to be said for the creative flavors and toppings, but nothing really wowed me in a way that I would definitely recommend this place to any friends I knew would be visiting Portland.
On top of that, both Voodoo Doughnut locations felt very grungy and crowded. I know at least some of the feeling is part of the vibe, but I felt very hesitant about sitting down and eating inside the store.
It was nice to go and try some unusual flavors, but if I were to come back to Portland I’d probably try some other donut places instead.

Pot Hole doughnut
Cream filled chocolate bar, with Oreos topped with a trail of frosting for adhering to the proper side of the road to eat first. apparently there is a big pothole issue in Portland thus named so.

Raised yeast doughnut with maple frosting and bacon on top! these sustained us all the way to northern Calif on the trip back home.

Maple Blazer Blunt doughnut
Raised yeast doughnut rolled into a blunt & dusted with cinnamon sugar. The tip is dipped in maple frosting and red sprinkle embers… got the last of the stash!

Coming in really late at night from Hawaii, this was our 1^st stop at 12:00 am. We were still up; we are on Hawaii time and that was 3 hours behind, so it was still early!
The place was easy to find using the Waze app on our phones. There was a lot of parking at this time, so that was no problem. There was a sign that warned us of falling nuts from he trees, but that was more cool than worrisome for us.
We walk in to the place & it was all about cool. Free pinball machines. Cool posters. Awesome t-​shirts. Freakin’ chandeliers. And doughnuts.
Let’s talk doughnuts. Because that’s what this place is all about. So much doughnuts! It was hard to decide, but we ordered the Bacon Maple Bar, Dirt Doughnut, Sprinkle Doughnut, and an Old Fashioned with Chocolate Frosting. Each doughnut was DELICIOUS!!! No one shared, but we all said the same thing, we wanted to come back for more!
The doughnuts were great. The customer service was awesome. The décor was awesome. I definitely wish we had one of these back home in Hawaii!!!

Why would any of you crazy idiots go to the location in downtown Portland? Do you like waiting? Do you like sitting around outside in a line?
In the time it takes you to wait through the downtown line, you can walk to Voodoo Doughnut Too, get your Doughnuts, and walk all the way back. I wish I was kidding.
Anyhow, back to the donuts — They are delicious. The maple bacon bar is a work of art. The one with a bunch of Cap’n Crunch takes me back to my childhood. I’ve had 6 or 7 other donuts here and, even though I don’t remember the specific flavors, I remember loving them.
Voodoo Doughnut Too — for those who love donuts but can’t stand waiting for them.

Classic donuts with a fun spin. Voodoo is an awesome, eclectic place that will quickly become a donut fan’s favorite spot. The line at Voodoo Too was past the magic carpet (aka right inside the door) but the team is super fast and friendly and we were up at the counter in no time. For us, this was plenty of time to take in our surroundings, look at the menu (although we could had taken our time if the line was longer) and look at the rows and rows of donut displays!
I thought the layout of the cashiers is genius! They have a cashier on each side of square counter so you have enough room for yourself, feel like it’s you and the Voodoo Donut guy/​gal and you are right next to the display case. Even though there was a little line the employee was very patient in explaining customer and his favorite since we were newbies. They definitely get a A+ for service especially since they are so busy.
My husband loved the penis donut (creamed filled donut with dipped in chocolate). Hilarious all the way around. It was so big (get your mind out of the gutter guys) that it had to fit diagonally in the box. All in all Voodoo has some fun creations to your classic favorites.

CASH ONLY! I feel like I have to tell you this first, because it’s most important. This place is definitely cash only. There are signs everywhere, and we just didn’t pay attention or read reviews prior. Boo.
Anyway, they have a PARKING LOT! That’s nice! Because the other location doesn’t, and it was a little bit of a pain to find parking.
When we got there, we witnessed a WEDDING! Yes. They perform ceremonies there. I read it on their signage. This couple got married, and they got wedding donuts afterwards!
There wasn’t much of a line. There was just a brief pause in taking orders as the wedding was happening. I can’t say much about the donuts at this location as we didn’t get to buy any. We forgot cash, and we had to go to the bank. We ended up at the other location.

If you are a self-​proclaimed foodie and have had gourmet donuts from other places or you are visiting from California, you will be thoroughly disappointed. If you don’t care about the quality of the doughnut, come here for a diabetes-​inducing doughnut experience.
Picture the range in quality of food. For example, if you want Mexican food, there’s Taco Bell (bottom tier), followed by Chipotle (mid-​tier), and then your gourmet, family-​owned quality Mexican taqueria (higher-​tier). Voodoo Doughnuts is the Taco Bell of donuts — cheap, and full of stuff you don’t want to know.
Regular doughnuts are priced between $ 0.85-$ 1.50; with the bacon doughnuts priced on the high end of $ 2.50. We bought but couldn’t finish the following doughnuts:
1. Bacon Maple Bar
2. Portland Cream Doughnut
3. Lemon Chiffon
4. Mexican Hot Chocolate Doughnut
5. Mango Tango Doughnut
What’s crazy is that on any given day, there are huge lines for Voodoo Doughnuts.
Pros: Cheap
Cons: No better than your neighborhood doughnut stand; huge line

Warning: if you try to take Voodoo donuts back with you on the plane, you WILL get hit on multiple times at the airport, on the plane, etc. Sorry Mr. «are those for me?», you’ll have to come up with a better line than that.
Why all the attention? Probably because the Voodoo name is known far beyond Portland, and because everybody knows that, as the Voodoo slogan goes, «good things come in pink boxes».
Fortunately, you can get your Voodoo fix without having to jostle with people in line for an hour at the flagship store. Just head over to their second location, Voodoo Doughnut Too, where there is no wait and the iconic donuts are just as weird.
Plus, you gotta love the names. If you like chocolate, go for the Triple Chocolate Penetration (chocolate frosting, Oreos and peanut butter) or the Old Dirty Bastard (Cocoa Puffs). If you’re Canadian by association, try the Bacon Maple Bar. And don’t leave without getting a few of the iconic Voodoo Dolls, a chocolate voodoo doll with a pretzel stick poking into him. Before eating said doll, imagine him to be your ex or your annoying coworker and give him a good stabbing with the pretzel stick.
And bring cash, because you won’t be taking home these pink boxes without them dolla’ bills.

We didn’t have had the patience and energy to wait in the queue that exists at Voodoo Doughnut One, so I’m glad that we had the opportunity to visit this location.
Location is cash only. Parking was super easy in the lot. Prices are fair and the portions are HUGE. There are so many flavor options within each cake, yeast raised, or vegan offering.
I had the bacon maple bar. I knew bacon makes everything better, but who knew it would be this amazing on a doughnut? I honestly don’t think I can eat maple bars/​doughnuts again without the bacon…

La référence absolue en matière de donoughts. Impossible de passer par Portland sans s’y arrêter au moins une fois. Ca se mérite néanmoins, car il y a systématiquement la queue, mais l’avantage de cette seconde adresse, bien qu’accessible qu’en voiture, est qu’elle est beaucoup moins fréquentée que la maison mère.
C’est assez stressant de prime abord car le choix est immense et le menu super long, mais on finit souvent par y arriver. Parmi les donoughts «signature», on retrouve celui au maple syrup et bacon, ainsi que celui en forme de poupée vaudou (le bonhomme qui crie quoi) dont je né me rappelle plus le nom mais qui est gros, glacé au chocolat et rempli de confiture de framboise si je me souviens bien. La plupart des donoughts sont très réussis mais certains un peu décevants, donc attention à votre choix, restez sur des terrains balisés et né soyez pas trop aventureux, surtout pour une première fois.
Ils restent très abordables (plus chez que chez Donkin Donuts mais beaucoup moins que l’équivalent à New York par exemple). À né pas manquer !
