This deli counter/market is amazing, however, they just closed for good(or rather, bad) on July 15th. They did have the best roast beef, bacon, pancetta, and miscellaneous unpredictable hamburgers, steaks etc. Plus artisan chocolate, oil, sundried tomatoes, mustard, etc. etc. So why the heck did they close??? So sad. The new business going in its place is yet to be disclosed.

The Products: Excellent selection of pantry and household goods that are natural, simple, and hard to find elsewhere. They also have amazing meat, and when in stock their eggs are delicious. The People: Don’t bother expecting even a «hello» here unless you are a hipster. Seriously… I’ve been in here several times and have never been greeted, and employees always seem reluctant to help me without any conversation, even when I’m the only one in the store. At one point the only employee behind the counter had her back to me for several minutes and refused to turn around. Then, when hipster people come in, they are greeted with warm welcomes and hearty conversation. I’ve gotten snotty service one too many times here and will not be coming back.

This place could net 5 stars just for their knowledgeable and friendly staff. When you go to the Woodsman, take the time to talk to the staff. Their recommendations and advice are worth heeding. Maybe they’ll turn you on to your next favorite thing… like some amazing hot sauce that is only brewed in small batches in oak barrels! I’ve come here for a little over a year, usually stopping by to pick up some of their delicious meats and some cheese to go with it. Their roast beef is hands down the best in Portland. I’ve recently added the Woodsman to my weekly lunch rotation as their sandwiches are delicious and they will serve them up on Jensen’s gluten free buns or bread. Call ahead for fast pick-up service.

My husband visits this market often, for their specialty meats. This is about the only thing we buy here. It’s not that the stuff isn’t nice, it is, but… it’s expensive and you don’t really need it or need to buy it here. It’s a really cute shop though. It’s a Pinterest and Instagram dream! But my hubby says this is the best place to get his special meat. haha… They have great roast beef and fancy European meats. I don’t know the names of them, sorry. As far as the chocolates and other stuff, just buy it somewhere else. Really, you can find it at Pasta Works or even World Market or Freddies. Now, about the bread… so this is a little political thing, but they used to sell Ken’s bread from Ken’s Bakery. Ken makes THEBEST bread in town. We used to get their baguettes and loved it! But then the owner of this place decided that HE could make bread too. Sadly, he’s not as good as Ken. And so in turn the bread here is not as good… so we don’t buy it anymore. The people who work here are super nice and friendly too. They seem to really like what they do and are pretty knowledgable.

For my 600th review I give you — The Woodsman Market. The place I’ll shop often when I’ve «Made It» in life. I love love love this little artisan market. For being such a small market it really packs a punch. Every nook and cranny of this place is filled with delicious or fanciful things you want to own. Fancy food magazines, locally made goods, fine wine and other beverages, really nice knives… yea they manage to sell knives. It’s the perfect place to pop in if you’re looking for a Portland-centric gift for someone, need something for the foodie who has everything, or just need to treat yo’self. You’re bound to find what you’re looking for. I should say this all comes at a price… but don’t all fancy beautiful things? Le sigh. The only sandwich I’ve had from the deli is the Italian and there’s a reason for that. It’s PERFECT! Each time I go I have every intension of getting something else but I just can’t. It’s winter, it’s cold, so I decided to watch The Sopranos in its entirely. Watching them eat all those delicious sandwiches it’s all I could do to stop the show and dash across town to join in with my own Italian sub from The Woodsman Market. This is a Italian sandwich Tony Sprano would give his seal or approval to, I’m sure of it. The meat to bread ratio is magical, the bread is crunchy without being over the top and the dressing… magnificent! If it’s good enough for Tony, it’s good enough for me.

As a market, I love it. Great selection of meats, cheeses, and specialty goods. Kind of like a smaller Pastaworks, but with more of a focus on local goods rather than imported. As a sandwich bar, it’s lacking… something. It might be just the sandwich I ordered – the simple, seasonal BLT. The bacon was super smoky and delicious, but the sandwich was SO tiny. It’s rare that I can finish a sandwich at most places, but I ate the sandwich with a side of chips and was still hungry. Considering that the sandwich was so simple, $ 8 was a little ridiculous for something that size. 5 stars for the market, 3 stars for the sandwiches. I’ll go back and try another sandwich soon, but I’m thinking this might be more of a place to get the ingredients and make my own.

«Dream of the 1890s.» You know that song that starts off Season 2 of Portlandia? It’s right here. Complete with a hand cranked meat slicer. Life is just a little bit slower the moment you walk into this market. We stopped in to get supplies for an impromtu picnic date in the park and we watched as the line grew out the door because it was taking so long to hand crank the meat slicer. It was funny because the older gentleman that ordered the meat said to them, «You know there are electric meat slicers, right?» The wait wasn’t bad though because we got to look at all the other cool products they had. A fun mix of never seen before drinks, pastas, jars of antipasti, fresh veggies, and more. It all made for a very European feel. Like the place you’d stop by after work to pick up a few things to make dinner that night. When it was our turn, the guy was good at focusing on us as we asked for his recs on what salumis to buy. We settle on a spicy pork one that I can’t remember the name of as well as some soft cow’s cheese. We also got their last baguette, which I think was from Little T’s, some woodblock chocolate, a couple of ginger ales, and one of their little mason jars of rice pudding. We loved his recs and enjoyed them thoroughly in the park. The rice pudding was only average, but the packaging was adorable. We’ll definitely be stopping in when we want more meaty cheesey goodness. I’m also excited to try their sandwiches sometime. Fried chicken sandwich with Nong’s Khao Man Gai sauce? Holy batman! That sounds soo freaking good.

***The Woodsman Market features a great selection of cheese(with some very hard-to-find European options as well as burrata); they also have some nice looking cured meats, local product and packaged snacks; you will also find ginger beer and candied ginger here to help make a good Moscow Mule at home*** The Woodsman Market is located in a residential area. Free street parking is available.

Came here for cheese and prosciutto and was really happy with their recommendations. It’s a friendly, unpretentious, and quaint little market.

Came for the Gin Marmalade, Stayed for the Chocolate Pudding, gourmet accoutrements and a tiny tin of salt. Addicted to great packaging? Love a locally made product with a story? Want a decadent chocolate pudding in a mason jar? Want fresh flowers or vegetables? Okay, then trundle up SE Division to the conveniently located next to the Woodsman Tavern, little sister Woodsman Markets. I don’t think it is a conincidence you could spend Saturday morning indulging in brunch at the Tavern and then stop in for supplies for a chauterie plate at home in the afternoon.

Portland’s version of Formaggio Kitchen beats the heck out of Cambridge’s. For one thing, the staff at The Woodsman Market are refreshingly unpretentious and completely helpful. The patrons are also better, because they are not Harvard professors nor their househusbands/wives. But, this shop is very small, so the selection of wares is limited. Care has obviously been taken to choose really great stuff though, and the shelves are full of excellent local products, from soap to ice cream. There’s also a good selection of meats and cheeses. If you’re going to a fancy party, stop here and pick up your gift for the host. You will definitely win the best guest contest if you do.

To market, to market We go, we go To chat with the employees Who smile and say hello To grab delicious goodies That’s there for show To sample some cheeses We loved them so To pick up some plants For you to grow To admire the atmosphere It’s comforting, you know To the Woodsman Market… we go, we go The Woodsman Market is located right next door to the resto itself. This cozy, local, mini-grocery store is a cute, quaint place, offering local goods, produce and plants. Prices are reasonable(for organic and local items) and the service is amazing. A couple of my friends were able to grab some cheeses and salumi. I on the other hand, headed for their homemade cookies(Double Chocolate Chip with Almonds and Oatmeal with Berries, $ 2/each), which were kinda tough than I usually like my cookies to be, but both were quite yummy. You can taste that«homemade» factor! Other items you can find here: heirloom tomatoes, fingerling potatoes, red onions, carrots, fresh made pesto, milk, chocolate milk, hot sauce, dried pastas, pasta sauces, fresh baked bread, cookies, farm eggs, wine, beer, cured meats and sausages, pickled veggies, canned tuna, gourmet cheese, prosciutto. If you’re in the SE Division area, check this place out. It’s so cute. I’d like to try their sammies the next time I’m here. To the Woodsman Market, I hope you go and go…

Am I on a back street in Italy or what? Seriously, this little market is so Euro. Fresh local-made stuff like the most delicious granola you’ll ever have? Cured meats and cheeses? Gourmet pickled things and canned meats? Fresh baked breads? Farm eggs? Select wines and beers? Oh yeah, these folks have plenty of deliciousness that I want but probably don’t need. it’s like a little boutique neighborhood grocer in NYC or some other big worldly city. But it’s on Division in PDX. Keep me away before I spend too much $$.

I had no idea the Woodsman opened a market right next door to their restaurant… I was so stoked to wonder in here after having dinner! It’s so cute and quaint with the white subway tiled walls and glass cases… They have a huge selection of meats and cheeses, and they sell salami from Chop! They have a little of everything here from pasta, honey, bread, pickles, to milk in old school glass bottles like the ones Alpenrose used to sell when I was a kid! This would be a great market to shop at when having some special friends over, or for holiday entertaining. Not your usual meat/cheese selection, but a fine one indeed!

A cute little gourmet shop, right in my neighborhood! Tiny, cute, historic-looking with little hex tiles on the floor and shiny white subway tiles on the walls. Pretty old-style shelves display condiments & pickles & such. And bottles of wine… to go with the yummy by-the-pound offerings. Behind the chilly glass you’ll find all kinds of charcuterie, some butchery(?)(you know, raw meat! To take home and cook!), fine cheeses(from Steve Jones /Cheesebar), milk in glass bottles, yogurt, drinks. Beautiful flowers bouquets are displayed on a cool old cart on the sidewalk in front, and a small but nice selection of fruits and veggies on another matching antique sidewalk cart. Some fresh baked bread rounds it out, from Little T further down Division. A mini Pastaworks! What a great addition to the neighborhood – I can see folks from the nearby blocks swinging by for goodies when hosting that impromptu«bottle of wine on the front porch»(or in front of the fire, depending on the weather). And of course they had samples out today – prosciutto and … was it coppa? Anyway, both were top-notch. So hooray, welcome to the ‘hood!
