The doors are locked and no going… SO disappointed, had hankering for good Mai tai!!! Oh well, still good. We ended up at Tasty-n-Sons which has fab drinks and way better food!!!

Ok man this place will get you feeling tossy:) the food is cheep and not so bad. The one thing I was bummed about is that you can’t get the big bowl of booze that they light on fire unless there is 3 or more peeps… dumb… but they will let you drink all night. other then that great fun drinks in a great area…

Great drinks and food! The side of rice was probably the best rice I’ve EVER had! It seems trivial, but if they can do that, then what other surprises are they hiding? The décor makes you feel like you are somewhere tropical, and being in Portland, we need that. It’s not a big place, so it probably isn’t good for groups larger than 6, but it’s fun for smaller groups. If you like bright sweet drinks you will love their cocktails. I subtracted a star because their prices are a little too high.

Baby eater!!! You must order one!!! Ok, now time for the review… I was in Portland for work and decided to make a fun trip of it. My husband flew up with me and we just tried to explore as much of PDX as we could. Thatch was one of our«must» stops while we there since we love everything Tiki!!! From the delicious and strong drinks to the pupus and lastly to the décor!(we have our own tiki room as well), this place did not disappoint! Tiki cocktails are an art form and Thatch knows their art. We both had at least 2 – 3 cocktails each and tried a different one each time. Most tiki cocktails are rum based so we didn’t have to worry about mixing too many liquors. For those who are not familiar with tiki cocktails, they can be STRONG and have LOTS of fruit juices! Make sure to review the drink menu and don’t be afraid to ask how strong a drink is, you don’t want to be caught off guard and wait to drive home so you can sober up! Also, as Thatch does specialize in these cocktails, try at least one! We also ordered the pupu platter and shared it with a couple of friends that we met there. Filling and good! It had a little bit of everything and a nice selection of dipping sauces was included. The décor was gorgeous and we loved the black velvet paintings. There’s booths as well to make the place feel cozy and an elevated booth in the back to overlook the whole bar. We can’t wait to go back to PDX and drop by this place! FYI, street parking available and you need a car if you don’t live there since it’s not in downtown where most of the hotels are.

I finally came for Mai Tai Monday. $ 5 Mai Tai’s all day. Or all the time they are open. I don’ t know when they open. I also finally ate here. We got the Pupu Platter($ 28) and 3 of us shared it. Perfect amount of food for 3 to share. I hadn’t had a Pupu Platter in a very long time. You get some fried shrimp, chicken and beef skewers, spring rolls, pork, rice and pretty much everything else that is on the menu here. It is a nice variety of flavors. Plus they give you 4 dipping sauces and a nice spicy mustard that will give you a nice kick in the cojones if you have said cojones to kick. This is a fun place to come with a few people. The drinks are strong(dangerous), the service is friendly and I can now honestly say the food is pretty good.

Thatch was the first leg of the tiki bar hop for my birthday. It’s small, dark and intimate. The wait staff is peppy, attentive and helpful. They pour hearty drinks with throw back names. I really have no reference point for drinking beverages out of containers that have carved faces on them, but it’s awesome that Thatch will be marker. The décor I assume is tiki standard, but the multi-colored puffer light fish lamps hanging from the ceiling were outrageous. I’ve never seen anything like that. I had a friend who was insistent on ordering a «volcano bowl». Which is exactly what it sounds like… well, not really. There is fire in the middle of what looks like one of those combo chip/dip bowl. The bartender then comes over with nutmeg(who knew it was flammable???) and shakes it on the flame to create an effect that has everyone ‘ooohing & aahing’ like it’s your own personal firework show. Add in several ounces of a non-dairy, sugary, alcoholy concoction, get several straws to share and BOOM… drinky magic! We ordered the pu pu platter. It had a tiny little fire going on in the middle where the meat kabobs were being sizzled and seared. It was also great(read: amusing) to use it to reheat some of the other appetizers on the platter. The chicken skewers were tender, though the rest of the platter seemed to be standard bar fare, egg rolls, crab rangoon, fried shrimp respectively. The dish came with five sauces, though I could only figure out what two of them were from taste. It’s a very dimly lit bar, so I was really guessing. One was a stingingly hot mustard sauce that everyone enjoyed and shrieked at as our nasal cavities were cleared. The other was a teriyaki sauce… I think. Can’t say I really party it up on Broadway, but if I was in the mood to act like Don Ho, I’d go back to Thatch!

Can’t let the heat of the moment get to me too much… but seriously?! After watching a no reservations episode from hawaii and seeing all of these heavily rum weighted cocktails I wanted a Mai Tai. Headed up all the way from Sellwood area and arrived just before 11 to be told…“sorry guys I just did last call”…ok so I can’t get last call? You don’t want to make money? There are people in your bar and the door is open… maybe even ask why we came in, or explain why you are closing an hour earlier than posted. Maybe allow us to get last call… or say you are closed. If you JUST did last call why can’t we get a drink. A waste of gas, and my time, boo. All I wanted was a Mai Tai… Hours say 12

Thatch Tiki Lounge is a kitschy but cool little place that my fiancée Leesah T. enjoys. The vibe is quintessential 60’s tiki lounge with puffer fish light accents, fruity signature drinks and Yma Sumac on the jukebox. My fiancée is into this sort of thing and loves the Pina Coladas, which come in a ceramic coconut shaped glass. I am not a drinker and I did not see any non-alcoholic drinks on the menu, but the friendly bartender made me a «Virgin Sacrifice». The Virgin Sacrifice was fruity and had a hint of ginger that was very refreshing. Overall fun, cool, intimate lounge that is great to bring a special someone for a relaxing drink. Cute date spot.

Any soul who likes a good Mai Tai is all right in my book. Perhaps it’s because I was raised in Hawaii. Perhaps it’s because I usually drink lots of beer. Perhaps it’s because the drinks blot Portland’s dreary weather from my memory with enough rum to sedate a rutting rhino. Whatever it is, I do love this place. The food’s not awesome, so what. The drinks are, the staff works hard to cover all the bases. Now shut your eyes, sit back, and drink in a little more Bali Hai.

Thatch sets the standard for Portland tiki bars, period. Puffer-fish lights over the bar, velvet paintings of tiki gods(and one of Michael Jackson ala Thriller), Mai-Tai’s that will get Keith Richards full-tilt hammered, and enough tiki kitsch to make even the most jaded island connoisseur stand back in reverence. I dig this place… a lot. And on Sunday’s you can get your mai tai hangover on for only $ 5. The food is sketchy, but the drinks… wow! I haven’t brought anyone here that wasn’t completely sold on the experience. Come with your girl/boy friend, order a couple of drinks and canoodle in one of the dark corners in a booth. It’s a great time in a great atmospheric bar.

Puffer fish lights over the bar? Check Exemplary mai tais(only five bucks on Sundays)? Check Friendly, capable bartenders? Check Unlike the cheese of the Alibi or the crass commercialism of the revived Trader Vics, Thatch does a proper, classy, and very on the money version of the postwar American tiki bar. Impressive stuff.

Love this place. So dark you could bring your mistress or guy on the side if you wanted… not that you would. Great drinks. I always like the«lift off», they set it on fire and it has two types of rum. GETTHEPUPU platter. Great price for lots of good nibblers.

Some bars get rated for atmosphere, some for music, some for service, some for food, some for drinks, and most for a combination thereof. Every once in a while you run across a bar that delivers so absolutely well on one aspect that none of the rest matter. Thatch is one of those bars, and tiki drinks are what it delivers. I had been meaning to make it in to Thatch for quite some time, but I never really find myself in that sector of town, let alone at a time when I’d be drinking. Then late last year I judged a cocktail competition at a large food festival and came face to face with Heather, the maestro behind the tiki cocktails at Thatch. She made us a tasty cocktail and I was fairly well sold on wanting to come try out the real deal. Heather makes a mean, and real, tiki drink. Instead of the usual fruit+booze concoctions that most bars call tiki, these drinks are really the craft-cocktail version of what you’d think of as tiki. Yes, the drinks do trend toward rums and juices, but Trader Tiki syrups like Don’s Mix also come in to play, adding in spice flavors to bring depth to what would otherwise be a flat, sweet concoction. Between these and the tiki cocktails I’ve had from Portland’s other craft-cocktail bars, I’m starting to get the feeling that I may be drinking a fair amount of these drinks in the future, which won’t be good for my glycemic index. Yes, the space is done up to feel all tiki, and yes, they have an island-style menu, and yes, the service I got there was great. But none of that matters. With cocktails of this quality, they could be served up anywhere and I’d be coming back for more. But with how much booze gets masked in to these delicious flavorful combinations, I need to find out which bus line goes by here before spend a significant amount of time her. e These really are dangerous drinks. In a good way.

This may have been the most bizarre encounter at a restaurant or bar in my life. The story and events that happened this night(1÷28÷11) are ridiculous. My gf and I along with our good friends went to a nice dinner at Wildwood, which was top notch. Then we went to Thatch for a cocktail or two and met up with two more of our friends. We had a designated driver for the night and he had 1 drink. As we were ordering a second round the waitress took our orders then returned quickly to notify our party that we were being cut off. Nicole, our waitress said we were being too loud, using profanity and we were all obviously intoxicated. Everyone at the table was in shock. I personally had 2 glasses of wine with dinner and 1 cocktail at happy hour. Believe me, none of us were intoxicated, loud or using profanity. Rather than cause a scene I asked for the check, paid and left $ 0.00 as a tip. My friends exited the bar and my friend Paul and I went up to the bar and I demanded my money back, the owners name and the waitress’s name and the bartender who were currently engaged in a rude conversation with. The bartenders name is Heather and she used more F-Bombs in conversing with us than a 2 Live Crew concert. She threatened to call the police on my friend Paul and I and have us busted for trespassing. We told her to please call the police. Heather is probably the rudest most narrow minded person I have met in my life. Her professionalism is completely nonexistent. Once she figured out how she gave me my $$ back and we were on our way. We went to the Moon and Sixpence in Hollywood to kick back a couple beers and discuss the unprofessional ism exhibited by the employees at Thatch. Shortly after arriving my cell phone rang and it was a guy demanding to talk to me face to face named Robert. I had no idea if this was Heather’s crazy boyfriend or who it was. I told him where I was and I went and sat away from my friends so I could size things up before I confronted this person named Robert. A guy walked in and almost immediately went up to my friend Paul asking for me. Paul said I don’t know what you are talking about and left. Robert circled the bar a few times and then sat himself at our table and I came up from behind putting my arm around his neck and shoulders asking him why he wanted to talk to me. After realizing this guy was not looking for a throwdown I sat next to him and he introduced himself as Robert Volz. He is the owner of Thatch and Pour Wine Bar. He was professional, demanded to know the other side of the story he had heard from crazy Heather. We all told him our story and he shared a beer with us and commented he wishes he could share a few more. He wrote us a $ 200 gift certificate on an envelope and apologized deeply for the encounter. What freaked me out though was how did he get my cell phone number, well he said his brother is a detective and he called him to get it. I can guarantee you I will never go to Thatch again. To be mistreated and accused of something you defiantly are not is a bad, bad feeling. My friends and myself are educated people, we have nice jobs and work very hard. We are not a bunch of rednecks or college kids out to get hammered. We went out to enjoy each others company and kick back a couple drinks. The waitress Nicole and Heather the bartender should seriously look for a new line of work. They are completely awful at their jobs, have no customer service skills and obviously are completely unprofessional in their work. If these two are fired as Robert said he may do, then I may return. This was a crazy experience. I truly hope Heather is fired for her actions. She should not be running a place like Thatch, unless it is Thatch’s dishwasher. Is there a way to leave zero stars?

Modern Day Tiki Lounge with fun drinks & festive décor. A Cocktail Connoisseur was part of our party, he seems to know his shit, and it’s one of his favorite haunts. We were a group of 9 or 10, 6 of us decided to order the Pu Pu Platter which was a great way to sample the food. Most of us then ordered individual appetizers which run $ 6 — $ 10, for about $ 4 bucks more you can get the same thing as an entrée which includes a salad. The food is all well prepared, prices aren’t anything super great, nor is anything super exceptional, but all solid 4 stars. Lots of dipping sauces were a nice touch. Our Server was super friendly and attentive even though they were busier than usual for Mai Tai Monday($ 5 House Mai Tais) We did have a teensy problem when it was time to pay the bill so I would suggest that if you are going with a group bring cash or ask for separate checks ahead of time. You won’t find it if you don’t have the address or know exactly where it is as the sign can only be seen when you are directly in front.

I have been there twice before. totally forgot about Thatch! It’s a unassuming little tiki bar on Broadway. Go over the non smelly(thank you!) indoor pond and have a seat in this tiny, comforting little joint. If you want beer, they normally only have two on tap, both from the Islands. It’s probably best to stick with neon drinks with umbrellas and such. I haven’t had the food so I am not sure. I would get a fish bowl, if you dare :)

«A date which will live in infamy.» I don’t really know how it started, but a group of us has been celebrating Pearl Harbor day every December at Thatch Tiki Bar for a few years now. These have been some of the most infamous drinking sessions I have been known to attend. Their drinks are crazy strong. You know, the kind of crazy strong that you don’t see coming. One minute you’re sitting upright, laughing about… well, something hysterical, I’m sure. And the next minute it’s 1:30 a.m., last call(or we were shut off, I really don’t remember too clearly), and we’re all waiting for a fleet of Broadway cabs outside. It’s cold out, I’m sure, since it’s December 7th, but I can’t feel a thing. I’m just hoping to stay awake long enough when I get home to Google the term Donkey Punch to understand why everyone giggled each time I ordered one. Oh. Wow. Damn, Google, really? Carved Tiki gods. Velvet paintings. Blow fish bar lights. Looking forward to the next outing.

Usually a five-star story doesn’t end with your car getting rear-ended, but this one does. Thatch and its staff truly take you away to an imaginary TV time and place where maybe the events of M*A*S*H and I Dream of Jeannie are happening in sister canteens. They have the drinks you’ve always heard of but never thought were real — Singapore Sling, Pink Thing, Poor Bastard — and the 1960s Tiki menu to go with it. So good. So good that, when this happened… when the barman told me that a cyclist ran into the back of my parked car and broke my taillights — what?! — and called the guy(who had recovered and was booking it out of there) back to the scene of the crime… though it jolted me back into the present day, I felt compelled to extend the benevolence of an imaginary TV-era past and let the guy pedal, helmetless as he was, along his way. The Thatch people were more than kind about the whole thing. Honestly, I wouldn’t have even noticed my broken taillights til the next day, if they hadn’t been looking out for me. Plus, one of the guys gave me suggestions about where to go to get replacement parts that would save me dollars. Dollars that, in retrospect, I should have used to tip, but completely forgot in all the hubbub. Shoot. I’ll be back though, with friends and tips aplenty. And probably still-busted taillights.

Beware Portland, there is a coconut thief on the loose! There were no eye-witnesses, but all signs point to the nimble coconut crab. If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of the coconut thief, please contact the Tiki Bar immediately. Thanks to this highly dangerous and elusive crab, no one is able to enjoy fruity drinks concocted and served up with the flourish in an actual coconut. Other than the missing coconuts, I was not disappointed with the Tiki Bar. As has already been stated, this is tiki at it’s best — waaay over the top. I personally loved the bathroom, with a seashell paper towel dispenser, and totem watching over you — I’m hoping to make sure appropriate hand-washing and hygiene practices are correctly conducted. The velvet wall art is pretty cool. It is so dark in there, I thought they were just black and kind of boring, but when I took a photo of one it was filled with bright colors and tiki beauty. This was a great place for a birthday gathering as we had the back booths reserved. The Volcano did not disappoint; flames, cinders and high alcohol content served up in a bowl and slurped down with 18″ straws. I probably won’t make this a regular stop on the rotation, but it is great fun for when you’re feeling a little cheesy or looking for something different. On the other hand, I may have to spend a considerable bit of time here drinking to «research» for my upcoming trip to Maui.

I really hope dead men and Tiki bars tell no tales… I’ve now been a couple times and on the most recent visit I was the DD so I let my friends get all liquored up on chi-chis and fogcutters. The bartender was hysterical and presented my drink, The Sacrificial Virgin, with great style. Seriously, how can this place still be so awesome even when I’m sober?
