OnPoint Community Credit Union

The worst place I have ever dealt with. Uncaring, don’t remember commitments. I would rate this as a credit onion, not as Credit union. They can bring you to tears.

Full disclosure — I work at Wells Fargo and have been in the financial sector for several years. That being said, I’ve had the opportunity to try out a lot of different banks and their products. OnPoint is BY FAR the best I’ve used (my boss at Wells actually recommended OnPoint to me).
The tellers and member service reps at the Lloyd Center branch are so helpful and nice. They even remember me and greet me by name. Also, the manager, Richie Masotto, helped me get a great rate on my new car loan (2.29%) and helped me consolidate debt to reduce monthly bills. I do most of my banking on the OnPoint mobile app (which is awesome), but when I need to head into the branch, I’m always taken care of — Not like Wells or US.
And rest assured, when it comes time to open my new massage therapy practice, I’ll be headed to Lloyd Center for any business lending needs. Kevin Aguilar (sp?) is my favorite person to work with at the branch. Do yourself a financial favor and start banking with OnPoint.

Nice people. But, wow, that was the worst coffee I have ever had in my life, and I’m not exaggerating.

The only thing better at Unitus is the website. OnPoint is better in every other respect. I’ve had small issues that I have had at banks/​CUs in general, but overall I have been OK with OnPoint. (E.g., I had to give someone on the phone my social security number to get a blank form mailed to me, a fairly general form, which is absurd, but I can’t say that hasn’t happened to me elsewhere — that’s more a statement about the critical thinking skills of people who answer phones at banks than anything else.)

For years, on point credit union has been my go to place for excellent banking. I moved out of Portland several years ago but couldn’t bring myself to close my account. Since then I’ve been ebanking and depositing my checks via their network of ATMs.
Every couple weeks or so one of my friends will complain that they received yet another overdraft fee from one of their big banks. To be honest, I haven’t had an overdraft situation in years because my on point checking account is automatically synced to my credit card. When I overdraft, the extra money is charged to my credit card and I’m charged a three dollar fee. I’ve probably saved hundreds and hundreds of dollars by avoiding that $ 35 fee that most banks slap on automatically.
Another thing I love about Onpoint is that when I make a deposit, the money is available instantly. This is unlike Bank of America, for example, where I have to wait 24 hours before having access to my funds. I could not recommend this bank enough.
I do agree that their website is a little dated. But the Onpoint app has been very convenient as of late. It is been a real pleasure to be able to deposit my checks from my cell phone.

…Update: Just opened my mail and have a notice from the DMV stating that OnPointe did not send enough money to have my car registered. …

I have been waiting to update this review because I wanted to give a glowing update. I really wish I could do that, but I’m still troubled by my experiences with Onpoint. After my initial review posted, I was contacted by someone in senior management who wanted to discuss the situation where I was removed from my own account from a branch I’ve never done any banking at, as detailed in my previous review. Over the phone he was very apologetic and admitted that the fiasco was handled poorly in the aftermath. He agreed to send a written explanation and timeline of
events so that my husband and I would be better able to understand how I was able to be taken off my own account without my knowledge. He also insisted on sending us to dinner at a nice restaurant in Eugene as an apology for the trouble, and while that was not what I was seeking when I wrote my review, it was a nice gesture that my husband and I appreciate.
About a week later, we received a short note from the manager of the Coburg branch in Eugene. It provided the date when I was removed (in October of 2014 — it wasn’t caught and fixed until May of 2015). Other than that, it stated that the employee who made the mistake did, in fact, check identification — there happened to be two people in the system with my unusual name and she clicked on the wrong one. In my last review, I alleged that it seemed that ID must not have been checked, so I take it that the Coburg manager meant to correct me about what I wrote in my original review. The tone came across as «sorry for your trouble, but it’s really not our fault, and by the way, your review contained incorrect assumptions». It was stressed that the employee who messed up in the first place recognized her mistake immediately and tried to undo it, but just didn’t take all the right steps and I was deleted anyway (because this employee was apparently too busy to follow up and make sure she did it correctly). The letter seemed short and disingenuous.
Well, excuse me for being absolutely baffled as to how this mistake could possibly occur. If anyone had bothered to take it seriously the first two times we asked for explanation, I never would have written a bad review in the first place. I guess if my name was Jane Smith and there were ten of us in the system, it’s no big deal to use those ten accounts interchangeably? The letter, while sure to defensively address my review, never addressed whether or not I am actually officially back on my own account.
I asked my husband to deal with it after that — my patience is gone and he is nicer than I am. He talked once again with the senior management contact and we decided that besides saying the words «we are sorry» a few dozen more times (and I’ll give them that — they did say it) there wasn’t really anything else that we could ask them
to do regarding this situation. We decided to move on.
I officially became a stay-​at-​home mom this month and we decided to rework our budget. In doing so, we realized we needed to change some payment dates that are automatically scheduled to come out of our checking account. About a week ago, my husband called to ask for our truck payment date to be changed, and was assured that next month it will come out on the newly specified date. Since it had already come out for the current month, he was promised that it would not come out again in July. Well, imagine our surprise when our truck payment was taken out of our checking account for the second time in the month of July! Fortunately, it was after-​hours when we discovered the error, otherwise, they would have had a really upset woman in their branch that day. Instead, my husband called the next morning and they told him that it was just a «glitch» and that it would be reversed, appearing back in our account at the end of the day. Fortunately, that was actually done correctly. We don’t have the extra funds right now to double up on a monthly loan payment.
After our experiences with Onpoint, I certainly don’t feel comfortable being a member. I feel as though the mistakes that have occurred with our account were treated nonchalantly — nobody takes actual responsibility and it’s passed off as a «glitch». Also I would hope that if an employee does not know how properly complete a transaction, that they would ask for help from someone who does, or that they would follow-​up to make sure that a member’s account is taken care of appropriately and that mistakes are fixed right away. I want to move our business elsewhere, but it will take some research, as we have multiple loans through Onpoint. Until then, I’ll continue double and triple checking my account daily.

Stay Away!!!
I have been a member of this credit union for over 20 years and as soon as I have the time I will be canceling my accounts. This is the cumulative result of several very bad experiences. The first was getting stranded in Burma two years ago because my debit card would not work there. All of my co travelers from the States had no trouble with using their debit cards. Turned out, On Point had outdated information and claimed that the U.S. had sanctions against Burma and did not allow withdrawals. Those sanctions had been lifted long ago. I left Burma with a fraction of the gifts and experiences I had planned on due to this. The credit union paid me $ 200 on my return to not cancel my accounts, and apologized. That was not the end of the headaches, though.
Recently I attempted to call customer service to put a travel note on my account as I am again leaving the country and need to be able to use my debit card to get cash on my trip. I tried to call several times but was on hold for over 20 minutes each time. I finally went in person and had to wait for a ½ hour before someone could accomplish this. something that should take a 5 minute phone call.
Today was the last straw. I went to the outdoor ATM machines to withdraw cash for my trip at about 11 AM on a MOnday. Every machine was out of cash.
I went inside to use the ATM machine there, and the machine could not read my card, though it was reading the cards of every other customer and they were successfully making withdrawals.
I was directed to get in line. After a 20 minute wait I came to a teller who informed me the machine was broken. I pointed to all the other people successfully using their cards and withdrawing money from it, and all he (and the other woman who came to «help») could say was, «the machine is broken. we are waiting for a technician». Ok… well the machine only seemed to be broken when trying to read my card. They looked up my accounts and assured my there were no holds and it was the machine, not my card. The whole thing made no sense. and I am supposed to leave the country with faith that my card will work on ATM’S across the globe, though it cannot be read by the one in the credit union. They offered to make me a new card and then realized they couldn’t because their server was down. They recommended I wait. At this point it had taken almost 45 minutes for a transaction that I expected to complete in 5. No apology.
If I had time right now I would close my accounts today and move them, but I don’t. It is, however, number one on my list when I return.
If you are looking for a credit union, save ourself the stress and the hassle and go elsewhere!

I have been a member of Onpoint since my spouse became a Teacher 20 years ago, recently i reversed my decision based on two instances — out of town, paying a hotel bill (declined), we forgot to tell Onpoint we would be out of state. (Excuse Me)… Deposited a large check from a real estate sale, waited the 2 days for the check to clear tried to make a purchase for a cruise, declined — declined next day
Day five go to the branch am told that OnPoints new policy is that ATM card maximum withdraw amount (Cash) is being extended to ATM purchases over the web (etc) I cn however ask for a 1 day raise in my maximum amount until 5:30 PM and purchase my cruise tickets ~ will be getting a cashiers check next week and withdrawing our checking account balance and depositing it with a real bank ~ OH How they have changed

I have been a loyal customer since it was Portland teacher’s cu. Recently, my mom passed away and it has been a nightmare to deal with them. I have been given incomplete and poor/​wrong information from them at every critical point. My mom and I went in and became mutual POAs on each other accounts. Imagine my surprise when they told me this was nullified by her death (not mentioned on the form or by the representative). Since we did not know this, she had not made me the beneficiary of her accts and they froze them causing her auto debit bills to be denied which almost resulted in her property being uninsured. Not to mention that the accts have to go through probate now and I am the only heir. The bank staff don’t know anything about dealing with a member death and I got bad information EVERY TIME I went in that costed me money and time and more frustration in the worst time of my life. And, they lectured me when I complained; it has been unbelievable! And these issues are systemic and I think they will continue to happen. When I asked to talk to a higher manager, they told me to complain to one of the employees who had given me bad service. I am incredibly disappointed and hope people read this and protect themselves as they are NOT going to help you.

WORST CREDIT UNION EVER! OnPoint has treated me far worse than ANY bank ever has. Decided to join a credit union after hearing about how great they were. Heard good things about onpoint and decided to give them a shot.
Where to start. the employees act they are doing you a favor by helping you, and often with no reason look down at you. Let me tell you a story.
Years ago my girlfriend and I decided to get a join account. We went to onpoint where I had recently opened a personal account. Everything was going fine till the agent told my girlfriend that they were unable to open an account in her name due to her «bad» credit. Wait, what? We didn’t apply for any credit nor expect to receive any. In fact I came her to GIVE YOU MY MONEY. Only, for some reason you decided to run a credit report without even informing us of this, and they use that report to deny an account to her. That is outrageous! Worse, because they did this the next credit union and the bank after that told her that since onpoint ran a credit report, and denied opening her account they would also be unable to open one for her. It was years before she was able to open a new account. In that time she was forced to use a bank we both hated. It should be noted that she was not in chexsystem, nor did she owe any money to anyone other than medical dept. I can understand why one would deny an account for someone in chexsystems, but this, this I cannot fathom.

Other issues:
I applied for a auto loan. After running a quick credit report the lady turned up her nose at me, and started acting like I was a second class citizen. Note Unitus (GREAT CREDIT UNION) gave me auto loan with no problems and a decent rate.
Changing address. Should be simple right? Go to website, login, fill out form, done. Nope! Cannot do that online. Ok, call them. answer name, address, SS number. What branch did you open your account at? Who cares. fine whatever. Who was your employer when you opened your account? I don’t know. Well if you cannot answer this question, I cannot verify you are who you say you are. What?! First off it’s none of your business who I work for. Period. That in mind, I have no idea what bs I told you when I opened the account, because you don’t need to know that. Bah.
Standing at a teller driver license and debit card in hard. Cash withdrawal. My signature doesn’t match the one on my drivers licensee? So what? It never does. I never sign my name the same twice. This has never been a problem in my whole life. You have my ID, and I can answer any question you like to verify I am me. Not good enough, sign again. Fourth time? Still not good enough? WTF! I will go to the ATM enter my pin and my a withdrawal.
I could go on. but even thinking about these **sholes makes me start to rage.

AVOID THIS CREDIT UNION!!! Unless you like a place that loses your deposits, removes the funds from your account, makes numerous errors, and could care less about their members.
As my previous review states, there have been so many errors, but this last one really put me over the edge. I deposited two checks through the ATM at the Mall 205 branch on a Saturday about a month ago. I have my receipt with the photos of the checks deposited. One for $ 550 and one for $ 4.99.
A few days later I was at the Lloyd Center branch making another deposit when I was told my account was overdrawn. I found out that OnPoint removed $ 550 from my account and claimed I didn’t make the deposit. Of course, I don’t have my receipt with me from several days ago, it was at home. The attitude by the Member Rep was really pathetic… just business as usual, insisting there was no check in the deposit. He even laughed at my suggestion that they owe me NSF fees for overdrawing my account.
I had to ask for the branch manager just to start a dispute and get a «provisional credit» which is basically like OnPoint giving you a loan while they investigate themselves. Not very comforting. Most frustrating is that OnPoint didn’t bother to call me about the $ 550 check to see if I knew there was a problem, instead they just overdrew my account. Fortunately, I went to the credit union first before I headed to Lloyd Center to buy a few things for my new apartment, which never happened.
OnPoint pretty much ruined my evening.
For my trouble (over 2 hours of time spent trying to fix their mistake), they issued me a $ 25 credit. Put that in perspective for a moment though… OnPoint charges $ 35 for a NSF fee if you bounce a check which I never do, but they will give you only $ 25 when they make an error.
I went home, pulled out the receipt, called OnPoint and the call center said the branch had just closed. I asked if I could submit the receipt to them, and they declined. They said that they didn’t need it, that OnPoint would investigate it on their own timeline and I would have to wait. A professional Branch Manager would have actually followed up with a call to me a day or two later, but Elaine never did.
Instead, I filed ANOTHER complaint with the State of Oregon against them. Yes, ANOTHER complaint. The President of the Credit Union sent me a letter, and basically suggested I find another place to bank at. Here is an idea… put the golf clubs down and get some control over your Credit Union and actually handle accounts they way they should be.
I’m in the process of moving my accounts to a smaller credit union that will hopefully provide a better experience, but here is the kicker… if I close my OnPoint credit card, it will lower my credit rating because this is my oldest credit card I have, and up to 30% of your credit rating is based on the length of history of revolving accounts. It’s comforting to know that OnPoint is so unprofessional that they actually screw you over this way.
I don’t even know how this Credit Union is allowed to operate as a financial institution at this point. I have numerous letters from them explaining all of the errors they have made. Seriously, how a financial institution make so many mistakes???
I will post copies of those letters once I can scan them and delete any sensitive information so you know I’m not kidding about this.

Onpoint practices in the reorganization of debit transactions to obtain higher fees. The big banks got into trouble for this and soon Onpoint your Karma will come. Also they hold onto automatic deposited monies at least 3 days longer than they should. Their cashing actual checks is awful. Bad Banking. Go somewhere else.

With regards to Credit Unions in Oregon, OnPoint has the largest Asset Size. In the USA OnPoint is in the Top 50 for both Asset Size and Membership Size. That’s important data.
Data aside, I’ve had nothing but stellar Customer Service from «my» OnPoint branch in person, on the phone, and via email. This stellar Customer Service includes everyday banking, opening high interest savings accounts, transferring auto loans (we got a fanfrickintastic rate!), notary services, mortgage services, and life insurance. Each time that I’ve business with OnPoint the Staff has been courteous and thorough and they’ve spent as much time as I needed them to with me/​with my personal banking business/​questions.
They’ve even got a smart phone app. What more could you ask for?

I previously had some issues with Bank of America and their fees for practically just WALKING in the door! So I was nervous about switching but decided to go with a credit union. I posted a Facebook status asking the opinions of everyone. Where I should go, which location, etc. And everyone sent me there! It was the best experience I could have asked for! Everyone was so nice, even the guy who greeted you and logged you in. I could have talked to the lady who set up my account for hours, she was so nice and helpful and down to earth. I absolutely loved it! I don’t think I’ll be switching anytime soon. :)

I don’t know what all the huffing and puffing is about. OnPoint is great. Every time I go into the branch, I am able to meet with someone within a few minutes. They are always friendly and courteous. Their employees also seem to reflect the racial diversity of the neighborhood.
I recently spent four months in Central America, withdrew money at whatever random ATM I could find, and was only charged VISA’s small foreign transaction fee. I’ve been with OnPoint for years and never been assessed a single random fee. Once I actually deserved a fee, but they assessed and retracted it before I even realized what happened.
When I’m not in the neighborhood, I deposit checks and withdraw funds from Rivermark and Advantis ATMs around southeast. No big deal.

OnPoint blows. I was really glad to close my account and transfer over to Trailhead, but SURPRISE! the cashiers check Onpoint gave me was POSTDATED by two days. When I pointed that out they basically told me to fuck off, and refused to give me my life savings in cash instead. Now I get to spend the next couple days with no money, but with the added stress of having all my savings in the hands of little slip of paper. Thanks a pantload, Onpoint, for this stressful inconvenience. Totally worth it for the .1% you paid me on my money market account: you’re about $ 29 short of paying me back for the $ 30 in gas I’ve spent driving to your branches nowhere near anywhere I want to go.

No different from big banks. Same fees, same impersonal staff. We had an issue with a hotel charging us extra which overdrafted our account, hundreds of dollars in fees, what a mess. The «local» bank experience, just the same, they do not care at all.

I’m giving two stars instead of one because I have low APR for my two auto loans.
Years ago, when I got my auto loans, the process was incredibly slow. My application slipped through the cracks and they forgot about me… it took over 8 days before anybody called me back to acknowledge that I had applied. Meanwhile, I have a car waiting to purchase. The second time was better, but I had to actually go to the NW Vaughn location to pick up a check.
But the most horrible experience I had was that my husband and I tried to get a mortgage loan and were treated like complete idiots. We went a year or so ago and Lyndy at the Broadway branch told us to clean up our credit, save some money, and come back. Sure enough, we worked on our credit and had money saved up and were back in to discuss our options. She couldn’t even give us a ballpark amount for a loan even with all of the information she requested. Still, it took a couple weeks for her to hear back from underwriting and THEN a couple more once she figured something else weird. I was always having to email her to check up on the status. Not to mention, she wouldn’t even bother to discuss any other loans they offered. She insisted that we get 100% Financing and insisted that the FHA loan was a «horrible idea» but wouldn’t explain why. Uhhh?
A month later, she called back and still, only gave us a ballpark issue and that underwriting would need to review our application again but it would take a couple of weeks. That final call was over 3 months ago and I haven’t heard a word from her. I just can’t believe it, honestly… how do you just not call a customer back when they are trying to make the purchase of a lifetime? It’s mind boggling to me.
We decided to go through a broker who will be more interested in our needs and will actually give us the time of day.

If you’re a member, I recommend you keep a close watch on all transactions in your account. Call about anything questionable. I have been charged multiple times for a «miscellaneous unknown address» fee, even when I have updated my address and have RECEIVED mail from them with my current address. I called about the fee and they had no record of my current address. Are you kidding me? Makes me pretty nervous about banking with them when things like MY ADDRESS can disappear after it had been updated 6 months prior.
I’m also not a fan of the online/​mobile banking changes they have made.
Time to change banks…
