Fred Meyer

About 99 percent of the employees here seem severely unhappy, you’re lucky to get a hello out of them the whole time they are bagging your groceries. You just stand there in silence while they look like they hate their life. On a brighter note, the store is cool and has a great selection.

Jesus Christ! They are doing it again, stop rearranging the store. About the time I learn and remember where something id, it gets moved-​STOP IT.

I used to work for Multnomah University’s Reno campus, so this store was one that I would frequent when visiting the main campus in Portland. As others have mentioned, this is a Marketplace store (albeit bigger than the store in Palmer, AK which I believe is the smallest in all of the FM chain) and it does not have the full selection of a regular Freddy’s.
The pharmacy is efficient, and often carries drugs that others have to special order (especially Epi-​Pens.) I was in there yesterday for a Bluetooth headset — and while they didn’t carry the same stock as Newberg, I was pleased with what I found. The store has a compressed layout, and while somewhat odd, I could find my way around. I also like this store compared to Gateway because it’s much less crowded.
Only bad thing is that it was somewhat dirty and also lacks a gas station.

I like going to this smaller store because it is pretty close to my house and less crowded than the Hollywood store.
Why 2 stars? They keep rearranging everything and cramming in more and more and more stuff that it is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate. I understand they need to maximize profits but cmon already with rearranging aisles every other week it is annoying!
If I could rule the grocery store layout world, I would widen the damn aisles and group items together based on likeness. Also, get rid of all the clothes, this store had clothes years ago… got rid of them… now they are back.
I’m in the mood to complain I guess… all stores rearrange and remodel from time to time but for some reason this one feels chaotic and senseless.

Was in between meetings and ordered a coffee on the Starbucks mobile app. Well I placed the order under the wrong Starbucks this one was in this Fred Meyers. When I showed up they were very apologetic and the manager Shannon called over there and had already charged my card at the wrong Starbucks. Shannon walked up before I left and gave me a free coffee. Awesome and thank you even though it was me selecting the wrong store she still took care of me. Great surprise when I was leaving.

I bought a staple gun from the Fred Meyers on Glisan a little while ago and went back to get some replacement staples for it. They still had the staple gun I bought, plus about six or seven vertical rows of replacement staples, all with different product numbers.
Any guesses as to which type of replacement staples they’ve chosen not to stock?
Yeah. They carry a billion different types of staples – but none whatsoever for the staple gun they sell. Makes sense, right? After all, they wouldn’t want to make things too easy for their customers.
A Fred Meyer employee was helping me look for the right staples, and finally he just said «I think these are close enough. These should work.»
So of course like an idiot I bought the ones he suggested. Took them home and … nope. Don’t work with the staple gun they sell. Because of course they don’t.
Now I have to go back to return them.
That’s two trips to Fred Meyers, and still no staples. I guess it’s my fault for shopping there, right?
They should change their slogan to the «I don’t give a sh-​t store.»

Good luck finding what you’re looking for here. If they haven’t discontinued an item out of the blue, they’ve probably moved it to a different area of the store that makes absolutely no sense. There might be people working in the store that are there to help you, but apparently they’re ninjas, so you’ll never see them. You’d be better off to keep on going till you hit the next Fred Meyer store, because they don’t ALL suck as bad as this one.

Massive store and I’m not sure that’s such a good thing. It’s like a Über Walmart but heavier on the food, so they’ve got a little of everything kind of. Feels like a vast warehouse and finding help isn’t allows easy. Lots of good stuff though and it does provide you with almost a one-​stop-​shop.

My least favorite Fred Meyer store I’ve been to in all of Oregon and even Idaho. It really, really sucks. And good luck getting help from the hipster elitist staff. They just walk away from you before you can finish your sentence. Just dreadful…

I have to post this concerning this store!!! I realized today this business is beyond racist!!! After my experience at the Fred Meyer in North Portland. Today a black handicapped man was having issues at self check out. Instead of trying to properly help a handicapped man of color 3 white employees harassed this poor soul!!! I have seen this place twice in one week where their white employees will badger their customers of color compared to helping them!!! A fraudulent store full of racism at its core value!!! Please stop shopping here people!!!

Update: I am new to Oregon, so I was unaware that it is LAW in Portland to not have plastic bags in supermarkets. I have upped the rating accordingly for this store.

I don’t love this Fred Meyer. A lot like every other fred meyer in existence, but seems like either they are missing a lot of stuff or it’s just super hard to find. Was in a rush, and walked down the middle aisle to and fro searching for cat food and mexican/​thai stuff. No luck. Now I have to go to the market again today… darn you, Glisan St FM!

There isn’t many restaurants or even many businesses at all in the several blocks around here and Fred Meyer is where it’s at. It does not have Hawthorne’s sushi bar, an organic section-​worthy of the higher middle class or all the superstore traits. Other markets might work better for some, but this is good for most.
And yet, it has large swaths of food, kitchen and bathroom supplies, school supplies, books, magazines, bicycles, pet supplies, hardware, paint and clothing.
The parking lot is quite big and I have never seen it full, even though I go here frequently. They have a Chase Branch and USBank ATMS. When you walk in, you’ll know it’s big as you’ll immediately see lots of flowers, huge things on sale, an electronics store, a Coinstar machine and a customer service center, albeit that the customer service center’s lines move slowly.
Half the store is for all kinds of supplies. It’s rarely crowded.
Their sales are fairly sporadic. Sometimes in the summer, they will have all kinds of pool supplies randomly on sale in the parking lot.
The other half has all kinds of food. Each aisle is neatly laid out. You have basically a cereal aisle, a salty and sweet snacks aisle, a soda aisle, a few frozen food aisles, and then you have an organic aisle. I’m sure there’s twenty to twenty five aisle in the store that I didn’t mention, but you get the big idea of this big store. Some of the organic aisle is good, but often portions will be small and overpriced even for organic. The frozen organic food is often at about six dollars, but the snacks are more fairly priced. Non-​organic products are typically at a normal price.
Of course at the end there’s the milk. There’s a meat and seafood counter, along with lots of meat. Next to that you have the produce. At the deli you can sometimes get some fried chicken and fries for about five dollars if you’re in a hurry and want to eat at the Starbucks ahead. You’ll also see a nice bread selection, with all kinds of Udi’s creations.
This Fred Meyer isn’t the best Fred Meyer, but is helpful and the selection is good. This is certainly worthwhile to shoppers in the neighborhood.

You can buy just about anything here. Seriously! DVDs, furniture, scrapbook materials, and, oh yeah, food.
The self-​check out stations are HUGE and work pretty well. The bakery staff is genuinely friendly, and I like the seating area by the Starbucks. Bathrooms are, by and large, rather clean, given the amount of traffic they must see.

I’m not sure if he knows it yet, but one of the cashiers here is my boyfriend. He is a magnificent creature, and one day I might even remember to check out his name tag — it’s the next big step in our relationship, and I’m not sure I’m totally ready to know that much about him quite yet.
Even aside from my imaginary Fred Meyer boyfriend, I do love this store. It’s on the smaller side, compared to other locations, but it adequately satisfies my inner fat kid and the produce has been fresh every time I’ve wandered into that section. The meats are occasionally understocked, but never to such an extent that I fear I’ll starve to death if they don’t bring some more out immediately. The employees I’ve spoken to here have all been wonderfully helpful and kind, on the rare occasion I need something that I can’t find myself.

I live near this Fred Meyer and shop here often. Like any Freddy’s, it has a great selection of a dazzling array of products.
The good:
*Gluten free options.
*Small, but good, selection of Organic produce. The OG produce is usually reasonably fresh — I think the turnover is frequent, and competitively priced.
*It has a huge beer selection, where the usual mainstream and Portland-​focused beers are well-​represented. For more unusual ones you’ll need to go somewhere else, but Fred’s is more than adequate for a quick beer run. Bonus points for having gluten free beers and hard ciders on offer.
*Ditto for the wine selection. Vast, decent prices.
*Recently they have begun to offer a limited number of Organic meats. Handy when I don’t have the time to go to New Season’s.
*Nice selection of fresh flowers.
The bad:
*While they have a good selection, their «gourmet» cheeses are crazy expensive.
The best
*I’ve had really good customer service at this particular store, notably better than other Fred’s. I think it’s a little less busy than the Hollywood and Hawthorne locations, and the employees seem to go out of their way to offer to help. It’s nice.

This is my new favorite Freddie’s. I usually go to the one on SE 39^th/​Hawthorne, but it’s usually a pain in the ass to find any kind of parking after I get off work. I came by this location the day before Thanksgiving and not only got a parking spot right in front of the store, but I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Whoa! I really wonder what it’ll be like when I stop by on a Sunday morning sometime.
All the employees I passed were really friendly, saying hello and asking if I needed help. Overall it made for a wonderfully, stress free experience. And thankfully it’s not much further from my apartment than the SE Hawthorne location. Win-​win for me!

If you value your time (and your sanity), don’t ever walk in to this Fred Meyer on a Saturday morning if you’re in any kind of hurry.
I stopped in yesterday with a short and simple mission — bottle of San Pellegrino and a breakfast wrap from the Natural Selections cooler section. I only had a few minutes to spare on my way to judge an 11am cocktail competition (yeah, you read that right), so I made a bee-​line for my products and headed up to pay for them. It was at this moment that I entered some sort of vortex containing a slow-​motion time warp. I dashed to the Express lane to find an octogenarian with at least 20 items on the belt. Because she’s old I’ll save my expletive comments, suffice to say that if you have time to shop for more than 15 items, you have time to stand in the regular line. (Censored)
Not wanting to wait for what was likely to be a check-​writing and check-​register updating scenario, I skipped over to the U-​scan line, which was at least 1 deep, with all 4 scanners in use. One lady was just standing there staring quizzically at the screen, another girl was scanning an item and not putting on the weight sensor, and then trying to scan it again (unable to decipher the simplest of instructions), a third, this time a guy, was purchasing these giant appliances and laboring to get them from his cart on to the scanner, and a fourth guy had a basket full of produce, and was tediously looking up fruit and vegetable SKU’s and entering them by hand.
As my heart-​rate elevated and the minutes ticked by, I glanced back at the girl who had finally discovered the need to put the scanned item on the sensor so she could proceed. Sweet, she only had 2 items, she’d be done soon. Wait… she’s paying with coins and a crumpled bill that the coin acceptor wasn’t about to accept. A glance back at the appliance guy found him just barely getting to his second heater. The fruit guy was doing his own thing off in the corner, and the staring lady had either won or lost her staring contest with the checkout screen and moved on, thus bringing me to the front of the line.
It took every ounce of me to not lose it right then and there in that Fred Meyer. Normally I can keep my cool, but the situation was dire. These people were much slower (both literally and figuratively) than usual, and I was in a big hurry. I feel like it’s common decency to treat the u-​scan line like an express line — don’t bring a ton of fruit, you don’t know the SKU’s — and if you lack the basic mental or motor skills to operate a graphics based touch screen and follow basic instructions, then why are you even trying?! Let someone else do it for you. For the sake of humanity.
Finally, at long last, the girl with the 2 items got the machine to accept her ratty $$bills. After a good 3 to 4 minutes (to purchase 2 items), she spent at least 20 seconds staring at the screen wondering where her receipt was.
I think my BPM was at least 165 at this point. I was visibly sweating.
At last, she left. Fruit Loop over in the corner was still paging through different veggie pictures on screen to find SKU’s, and appliance guy was wrestling with another big box. I timed myself — less than a minute. That’s all I needed. I can’t imagine that anyone who has used a U-​scan more than about 3 times could not be pretty proficient with it.
I snagged my receipt and attempted a hasty exit. A lady with a cart was making diagonal slice across the aisle, effectively bottle-​necking traffic. I juked past her and almost Heismaned a dude who tried to cut me off. Half-​way to the door I could see the daylight outside and knew that once I was in the open parking lot I could get moving. But alas, one more obstacle remained.
Two people had stopped — one entering the store, one leaving — to catch up and say hi. They had each turned their carts to face each other, laterally blocking the entire entrance lengthwise. The few people in front of me started to pile up into a stop-​and-​go shopping cart jam, and these two oblivious cock (tail) blockers were just yakkin’ away.
I spotted a small crease off to one side, enough for me to run an end-​around and brush past and into the front door vestibule. By this point, after much contemplation, I had convinced myself that making a comment to these people (who were seriously blocking the entrance) would only have slowed me down. I’m sure they would have taken offense, and I really didn’t feel the need to ruin their day as much as they were messing with mine. I gave them the stink eye as I dashed past, out of the vortex and into the light of day. Freedom.
It took me less time to get all the way to goose hollow from 60^th and Glisan than it did to make a simple transaction at this Fred Meyer at 10:37 on a Saturday morning.
My San Pellegrino was delicious though.
