Hong Phat Food Center

This store is somewhat confusing, but I appreciate it for being here. My biggest complaint is all this seafood and Asian food, but no poke? I was disappointed by that. But otherwise I had a blast looking through everything and shopping. I appreciate that I left with taro, that is more rare in Oregon. The prices are decent. I love it for what it is. I love the aloe drinks but was surprised to see no Aloe King. I love the selection of seafood and fish! Delicious! I got a huge box of jasmine tea and will be back for more food here in the near future.

Hong Phat is a primarily Vietnamese market along the SE 82^nd Asian business corridor. There are several other markets in the area but if you want all of your Vietnamese products, give this place a try first. It compares in size to larger markets like Fubon but it doesn’t have all those extra businesses.
I remember a few years ago trying to find one of those plastic Vietnamese rice paper wrap & water holders. I looked in a lot of markets and could not find one! Some stores didn’t even know what I was asking for. This place had several to choose from!
They have a nice selection of fruits and vegetables and from what I saw, there was nothing rotten. Everything was fresh. They had a nice selection of herbs as well. I bought some jackfruit and it was wonderful! I’m still eating it! I bought some fresh herbs as well and they are still fresh several days later.
The frozen food section has just about anything you’re looking for and there are some good deals on frozen shrimp and squid.
There is an area with prepared warm food including many types of Asian foods and some western foods as well. You can get Banh mi sandwiches, papaya salad, fried rice, blood sausage, pineapple with chili/​salt, etc…
They also have an area where you can get hot and cold drink including coffee, juices and teas.

If you’re in the area give this place a try! Wonder around and I’m sure you’ll find done stuff to take home with you!

Low prices on pantry staples, friendly service, decent produce.
Dry goods and sauces are about half the price of Uwajimaya, though the selection is slightly smaller. The staff was prompt and friendly and made some great suggestions. The produce is a little inconsistent– some great deals, some items not the most fresh. I will be returning regularly.

Great selection and prices on meat and produce. Fun just to wander around, will probably head here to check out a rice-​cooker soon.

The ready-​made food section looks like it would be good, but it’s average and expensive. Vietnam has a rich coffee tradition, but the variety here is sparse; Fubon has a more extensive selection.
Another Unilocaler was right about dated items, two bottles of different sauces purchased in late December ’15 had January ’16 expiration dates.
Good luck getting help from staff if you need it. Lastly, there’s something odd and sucky about their parking lot.

For many of your Asian food needs in Portland, don’t miss this spot. I always get cases of my favorite coconut water here.

Came here to get fresh sugarcane juice and other yummy drinks! This place is always busy but it’s ok, that means they’re doing quiet well. They have a nice grocery selection also !!

Do not like the fact that when I buy something from this store, I have to either eat or cook it immediately otherwise I find a rotten mess in the fridge the next 1 – 2 days. The produces here are not fresh and expensive for what they are but the thing that bothers me most is the imaginary items they often ring up when I check out. This has happen multiple times to myself and people I know. Then when I asked for help because I bought a bulk size rice bag, the cashier gave me a dirty look and took 10mins to decide whether she would assist me or not.

It was our first time here in Hong Phat. My husband said it was an old safeway before so walked around and reminisce his childhood, lol! Actually we walked around to check out Hong Phat’s products. I say it’s like a smaller version of Fubonn, but with a little cheaper prices. All their meats and seafood are prepackaged and even the vegetables.
I definitely like the place and they have stuffy that I can’t find in Fubonn. Definitely a good store and will come back here.

When my little local Vietnamese grocery store closed, I had to find a new place to get my rice noodles, jasmine rice, asian vegetables. I finally decided to try Hong Phat Food Center. I knew it had opened but had never gone before that. It was a great time to finally go. I found my lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves, it was so cheap and fresh. Their other herbs were tied in bags and placed in a bin without labels so I had to smell to figure out which one was the Thai basil. They had galangal! I like to use Asian vegetables and they seem to deliver on the variety and freshness.
They have aisles of Thai curries, asian cookery, dried ramen, etc. There is a section that is dedicated to pre-​made food. It wasn’t too impressive but some of the items looked tasty. The smell of Thai fried bananas wafted through the aisle. I will definitely have to try it next time. I would come for all my SE Asian needs. Fubonn is down the street but a little overwhelming. The prices here are good ($ 1.29 can of coconut milk!) it’s pretty clean, and has what I need.
I got a few items but it would be good if they had hand baskets instead of hauling around a cart. I really want to go there and take my time, next time!

This store smells soooo bad. They have overly ripe bananas next to the door. You can smell them. They also sell chickens with their heads still attached and didnt pluck all the feathers off. Obviously they cant afford freezers because all their freezers are deep freezers you might find in someone’s house. The staff js really friendly and nice. Needless to say i ended up leaving without buying anything at all because it smelled really bad throughout the entire store and the chickens that had heads made me feel bad. I will not be coming back here and I love Asian grocery stores!

In the 90’s, this full-​size Asian supermarket would of been Dope, Superfly, and Phat.

Food Center the bizzat
Nowadays, Hong Phat Food Center is a grocery store with a wide mix of Asian and American meats, sauces, veggies, snacks, goods, and more. If your local little ethnic market doesn’t have it, head over to Hong Phat cause sometimes bigger is better.
A few tips:
* Check the expiration dates and for dust on items that aren’t very popular
* The veggies & fruit aren’t the best, but they are cheap … eat soon
* Frozen seafood is a big section. Go for live crabs or lobster.
* Hong Phat is more than a Vietnamese market
* Mixed throughout are Chinese, Korean, or Japanese items.
* Check out the café for pre-​made classics or fast-​food (so-​so)
* The bakery is blah
Because I rely on Asian markets for so many of the items my household requires, I’m a fan of Hong Phat Food Center thanks to the big parking lot, full-​size store, and diverse selection. Lots of Vietnamese in Portland live up to the phat (Pretty Hot and Tempting) standard. This market isn’t quite all that, but it is Hong Phat.

I really love this place as its HUGE. There’s a sense of peace as you walk through the spacious aisles browsing as the thousands of items on the shelves.
The selection of vegetables, greens and herbs are overwhelming — to the point that I spend most of my time there. They have a ready-​to-​eat section with lot of yummy vietnamese goodies. (I love the green wormy dessert — oh yummmm)
Only (very small) issue is that they don’t have some of the higher-​quality/​more popular brands at various other asian specialty grocery stores.
AND the fresh section is a little lackluster:
— meat selection is mainly focused for vietnamese cooking
— very small range of seafood
Otherwise they have (almost) everything you’ll need for any type of asian meal you’re looking to cook!

I bought some Asian fruits (rambutan aka Chom Chom) at the store on 82^nd, when I open the first two to eat they were not fresh and I thought they might have been old. I brought the fruit back for refund and was given refund without any question. While the cashier was processing my refund Mr. Hong (owner) came over to greet me. He assured me that the two I ate might have been isolated or unlucky of me that they were bad. He proceeded to peel a few more rambutan and his cashier had some also and they were all fresh and sweet.
Anyway not only Hong Phat refunded my money but the owner gave me another complementary bag to take home. With great customer service from especially an Asian store I am a customer for life and would recommend Hong Phat Super Market to my friends.

This is my to go place for Asian grocery!
Service: The staffs there are so helpful and friendly, i always walk out in awww. Not usual for Asian business but even better than the best service American stores. It’s been a year of great service and I’m still surprised everytime because I’m not used to this! The store is filled with staffs at all time. When i ask where something is, they walk me instead of pointing. One time i asked for duck eggs, the girl took me there and offered to saran wrap them. Another time i asked for corn, the girl went into the back to clean & packaged them for me. Sometimes they walk me to my car. Not exaggerating!
Cleanliness: Pretty spacious, organized and clean, again not usual for Asian stores. Aisles are open and no clutters. No fishy smell!
Selections: They have great selections. I love their produce department, always so fresh. Great selections of meat and seafood.
Price: since I’m new at this, i don’t really know how they compare in price, for sure not overpriced, i think. Mom & aunts go here so that’s a good sign. But they said dried goods are cheaper at Pacific Market.

Hong Phat Food Center is near the intersection of 82^nd Avenue & Burnside Street. It is an intricate market filled lots of Asian specialties.
This is a very large supermarket. As such, the parking lot is huge. You could also spend an hour here.
There are so many aisles. Indeed, they have the basic ichabon and instant noodles that are so common at ethnic Asian markets. But also, they have endless amounts of meats, including geoduck and fruits that Western kids don’t eat. They cater to an immigrant population and much of the words are in different letters.
You can find all kinds of drinks. You can have lots of fried food, such as fried bananas and fried yams.
On one occasion, I had a Coca-​Cola product from Thailand and it seemed to have been ruined in travel. This isn’t an organic store and some of the things will come right out of the same old Midwestern and Chinatown agriculture businesses as usual.
The food is not so exciting, but sometimes if you look around, Hong Phat may be useful as an option.

Now as some of you readers of my reviews know I am new to the Portland area. But that doesn’t mean I can’t write some good reviews. I like to explore a new area and get to know my surroundings. I pass Hong Phat on my way to work. I wanted to see what was going on in there.
If you look back at my reviews you will see that I have an affinity for ethnic grocery stores. Asian and Mexican grocery stores are so much fun to get lost in. The prices are usually cheaper and you can find incredible spices, bbq sauces and rubs that you won’t find in the big chains. Whole pineapples for $ 1.99? That’s great!
I wandered for over a half hour lugging around my motorcycle helmet. Some really interesting produce, an awful lot of kimchi, lots of french baguettes for bahn mis, of course an abundance of rice and rice noodles and all sorts of odd and interesting things. Pickled baby eggplants, gooseberries and many things I could not pronounce. Granted many of those things I most likely will not be getting but there are still many items I will look forward to trying.
If you are a foodie like me, and most Unilocaler are, wander around stores like this. It’s so cool to explore.

Café is still not much of anything. Produce section is pretty weak* these days. And while the dry goods still have a lot to offer, for now this will have to be one of at least a two-​stop shopping trip if I have any produce that I need.
*By «weak» I mean that I tried to source tomatoes and they were moldy, the green papaya was… well… I couldn’t find any, and they didn’t have a few other things I was looking for. And I wanted to make Vietnamese food.
Ugh.

So. I think seeing dragon fruit in what once was a Safeway’s produce section taps into the reptilian pleasure center of my brain — as does seeing Asian pastries where once there were Safeway doughnuts.
I ended up going a little crazy and getting pandan sweet cup thing, BBQ coconut sweet rice thing, sticky rice guy, nostalgic snacks — and only one actual grocery item of use (Taiwanese noodles I hadn’t been able to find at Fubonn earlier). I had to stop myself from buying all the nostalgic candy and dessert items and allowed myself only to buy a goodly amount.
I still ended up with a major stomach ache.
I hope they never ever change the Safeway fixtures and that I keep pawing through fresh lychees under their old «MEATS» sign.
Least productive but most gratifying grocery shopping experience in recent memory.

This is the new Asian grocery, located in the old Safeway store on 82^nd and Burnside. It must be working, cause the crowds in the parking lot are much larger than they used to be when this was a SafeWay.
It a pretty large Vietnamese market with fresh meat, seafood and produce. They also have sauces and canned goods. There is a huge selection of tea.
I even see some of the old SafeWay items on some of the shelves!
Woo Hoooo ! Limes, 4 for a dollar! Freddy’s charges you 39 cents!
The non-​food aisle is very interesting and is worth a visit, just for that!
