This is close to my new place and I was craving Thai one night so I decided to try it. I was a little nervous because it was 6pm and nobody was in the restaurant. I got my food to go, but wouldn’t imagine eating in the dinning room. It’s pretty outdated and has a strange smell. I ordered the vegetarian spring rolls and a vegetarian stir fry dish. The spring rolls where good, but the sauce had peanuts floating on the top which was odd. The main dish wasn’t very good, it lacked flavor. This is the first time I’ve ever had to put salt on Thai food. The heat was perfect, but the actual food had no flavor, it was very strange. I don’t know maybe it was just that dish, that night. Might go back and try it again down the road.

Date Visited: Wedneday 2÷24÷10(Lunch) It was a clear day and I was restless, so I looked up some Thai places near my office and went for a walk and figured I’d stop at the first one I saw or was closest to. I happened to be on the right side of the street when I came up to the«house» that was Eagle Thai. I can’t say that the outside made me want to go inside, but I was hungry. I doubt I’ll ever eat inside Eagle Thai as it doesn’t look terribly cozy, but I’ll probably order out again. I don’t know if I’ve ever been asked how I wanted my Pad See Ew before, but I was asked this time around. It was a 10 – 15 minute wait, so I walked to Safeway and shopped for a bit before returning. I was surprised at how the Pad See Ew looked, once I got back to the office. It wasn’t very dark(not a lot of soy sauce used?) and not only did it have broccoli, but it had baby corn, carrots, and celery. Except for the celery, I finished the dish and felt like I got my money’s worth.

OK, so the inside has not been updated since probably the mid 80’s and it was freezing when we entered. But don’t let the unpretentiousness of Eagle Thai fool you, the food is very good. The chill was easily remedied because JP saw the thermostat on the wall and with just a bit of chutzpah, got up, walked over and cranked the thermostat up to 70 from 61. Real bargains are the combination-for-two meals. Each of the combo meals has four items plus coconut ice cream for dessert. We opted for combo #4($ 12.95/person) and requested«medium» spiciness. Note that there is a lot of food and you will get filled up. Out first came the shrimp satay with a peanut dipping sauce. Perfectly grilled and seasoned. The coconut seafood soup then arrived. A delicious dish with a bright red curry flavor, it contained scallops, calamari and shrimp, as well as bits of scallion and mushroom. OK, I’ll admit that this soup also has«krab»(pollack) but that didn’t hurt anything. Next came the shrimp Phad Thai. Definitely a better than average Phad Thai — made fresh and lively with abundant bean sprouts and crumbled peanuts. The last entrée was a curry, probably the least impressive of the lot, though still good. You normally can get either halibut or salmon, but since they were out of halibut tonight and I didn’t want salmon, they substituted with prawns. The gravy-like sauce was a pond overflowing the serving platter. The curry flavor was very mild, almost undetectable. The coconut ice cream was rich and had a very pronounced coconut flavor.

I can summarize the food here in one sentence — fresh, fairly authentic yet bland. There is no adventure in this food. I don’t have any complaints with the quality of the food or the preparation — however all three dishes that I tried lacked any serious amount of flavor. Even their peanut sauce is seriously bland — tastes like a peanut soup with a watered-down coconut milk base. I don’t know if they’ve dumbed the dishes down for American audiences or what. This restaurant is placed in a squeaky, old house which does add a bit of charm(along with the faded and cracked menus). Their economical prices are what gets this place three stars in my book.

This place is right across from my bank, so I decided to pop in. When I got home to Unilocal it, I was surprised at all the positive reviews. We had lunch here and were the only patrons in the joint. Weird, but whatever. My lady got some yellow curry and wanted it hot n spicy. She got a small portion of some bland veggies and baby tofus. I got the pad see ew ew ew. It wasn’t that bad, but it bugged cuz some of the noodles stuck together, so I would dig in and have like six big ol wide noodles all clumped together. I did like the flavor though. I don’t think I’ll be coming back here. Frowny face.

I wished my dining experience at Eagle Thai can be close to four stars or even three stars, but it was not even close. My DL and I came here hungry for some delicious Thai dinner. After I read all these reviews from my awesome yeeps, I got excited to try this place out. When we got there, the place was empty, but it was still early for dinner. The guy handed us menus and we loved to see the low pricing that they have. I ordered the Salmon curry with broccoli, pineapple, basil, and coconut milk. Also paired with Thai Iced Tea. My DL ordered the Pad Se Eew with Tofu. Both of us requested four stars which meant HOTHOTHOT. We got our food not to long after. My curry came on a sizzling plate. I took my first bite and I thought«Well, this didn’t taste right. Something was off.» After few more bites, I realized what it was. The salmon didn’t have any flavor of the curry at all. Seemed like they didn’t mix in the salmon when they made the curry. The salmon just taste like salmon without any seasoning or spices on it. Same with my DL food, his Pad Se Eew noodles was pale. There were not enough sauce on them. The fried tofu didn’t have any flavor at all, we think that they didn’t mix the tofu with the rest of the noodles & vegetables as well. One thing that was spot on was the heat level. Our dishes were hot hot hot. I like their Thai Iced Tea as well, it was not too sweet just how I like it. I really want to like this place because I love Thai food and it’s always cool to find delicious Thai restaurants in Portland. I just can’t see myself coming back here for another bland, but spicy food. I love spicy food, but also with other flavor in them.

Roundly boasting you have the immune system of a wolf poses a challenge when you feel a little cold coming on. I must save myself from this cold, but more importantly I must save my bragging rights! My portfolio of cold cures includes: scotch & cayenne hot toddy; this hippie thing involving frozen socks, a wool hat, and mint tea(don’t ask); garlic in your ears(seriously). And, of course, Thai food. Eagle Thai serves up a great selection of lunch specials, all about $ 6. While known for their ability to turn up the heat, they respected my request for Mild Plus — which, for cold-fighting purposes, is far hotter than my usual«Can you do No Stars? Minus Mild?» Yum. Yowl.

Eagle Thai is my most comfortiest of comfort foods. If I’m sick, I want one thing. Some curry from Eagle. This curry has magical healing powers! And it can be made spiiiicey enough to kill any germs within’ a 10 ft radius, pretty much instantly. It also surprises you with some damn good egg rolls. and a LOT of them too. Thank you, Eagle, for not being stingy with your egg rolls like some places. Make ‘em good. And give a lot of them. That is how it should be done. The egg roll gods have spoken! Pad Thai here can be hit or miss. I’ve had it on nights when it was so fantastic that I wanted to call everyone i knew and tell them to get off their ass and try it… and also I’ve had it on nights when it was dry and more on the bland side. Still not bad though. Either way, I will say that the combo of chicken AND fried tofu in the Pad Thai is quiet awesome. A word of caution. Eagle is HOT. I’m not messing around here. If you get a 5 on the 1 to 5 scale… be ready. If you can take the heat, you’re gonna friggin love it. I however am admittedly puny and stick to about a 2. Ha. So if your heater dies this winter I have a solution. Just bundle up. Hit up Eagle for some spicy take out. Bring home. Eat. Bam! You’ll be sweatin’ in no time.

Most anyplace that offers a fulfilling lunch and decent service for $ 6 has my attention. Anyplace that does the above AND doles out fortune cookies(in bed) definitely gets my vote. Eagles Thai – they do this. And it’s this place that you’d never guess would be awesome… it’s just another one of those home-turned-restaurant places on Broadway. Let’s see… I just passed about 10 of them driving down the street. But beside the come-hither turquoise exterior(and the slightly chilled interior), the menu is totally affordable(even if you decide to order from the regular menu at lunch) and the service is totally attentive and adorbs. My pad Thai was just a bit on the dry side, but I liked that they included both tofu and chicken(catering to both the carnivore and the vegetarian in me), and that lunches come with a cup of tom kah soup. Buuuut… the soup was a little too tomato-ey for my taste. Bygones. Oh, and there are lots and lots of menu choices… but no pumpkin curry. What a shame. However, it’s quite a bang for your buck, and I’ll most definitely be back.
