We had heard of Brooklyn House through an acquaintance telling us about places in Portland that cater to people with allergies. I wanted to try it and we read a few other decent reviews so we gave it a go. The good things: 1. We went spur of the moment on a Sunday at brunch time and there was only other couple there! 2. The drinks menu was really extensive(seriously one side of one page and one whole other two sided page). If I wanted to get wasted on a Sunday afternoon that would have been great! But we were hungry. 3. I ordered an omelette with green veggies and it all seemed very fresh. The weird/bad things: 1. See numbers 1&2 above. 2. The cute old house vibe I like but this smelled like mildew and the décor was horrible. The tablecloths weren’t pressed(seriously wrinkled and looked like they came out of the free box). A lot of potential but clearly not a priority. 3. Our server was over the top nice. Now I know I shouldn’t complain but it was almost creepy how often she came by to check on us and every time saying«thank you again so much for coming in today». That’s very nice but seriously about every 5 minutes. Kind of had a desperate vibe, not sincere and kind of uncomfortable after awhile. Oh and everything took forever. 4. I mentioned my omelette above. Tasty and fresh although it was missing the cheese. It was listed on the menu and there was not any in the dish. I’m sure they would fixed that but I was so starving by the time we finally got our food that I didn’t want to wait another 20 minutes to eat. 5. Finally when we were leaving, the server said she was happy we were there(again) and that we were the«type of people we want to eat here»… Come again? What«type» of people are frowned upon? Not cool. And a lot of nerve being elitist like that with your free box table cloths. Oh and the sign to the restaurant is on the ground outside. So if you’re gluten free and like pretty good local fare and you’re the«right type» then you will love this place.

If you’re gluten free or even if your not, this location is amazing. I ‘ven’t had bread from a restaurant in years, and the bread they make is yummy! I am gluten free but my husband isn’t. And even he enjoyed enjoyed it. A must attempt is there brussel sprouts, and the rabbit Alfredo.

BROOKLYNHOUSE. They’re doing something really special here. And honestly, I don’t expect everyone to get it. But this place is an absolute labor of love, and their food is genuine art. Everything here is farm direct and made with the utmost care — not because it sounds good to say that, but because it really matters to them. It’s not the typical egomaniacal approach of a restauranteur looking inflate their own ego, or a greenwashed type business filled with compromises. It’s not food porn either, like so many popular places. This is food that will truly FEED you — filled with spectacular natural flavors from the superior ingredients and their painstaking approach to preparing them. For example, while eating the sweet potatoes, I literally had the emotional sensation of being enveloped in a warm hug by my mom… that’s powerful stuff! The restaurant has a fantastic low-key atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed meal and the best of company. It’s comfortable and charming — not a «luxury» setting — which to me is just perfect. A quick word on portions/price — they’re absolutely appropriate here. My very healthy appetite was totally sated with my dish, and I’ll bet anything that their profit margins are as low or even lower than any«comparable» restaurant in town(though I have not been to a place that really compares). If you’re the type who reveres cheap prices and/or huge portions over quality, you might want to do yourself a favor and pass on coming here. If you’re looking for glamour over substance in your food — same. Because goddamn it, this is a fucking awesome yet humble place that deserves sincere appreciation. They’re flying under the radar right now because they’re not pretentious or marketing-heavy about what they do. I selfishly hope they don’t get mobbed, but it might just be a matter of time. Brooklyn House is an amazing endeavor that deserves success.

We visited 5⁄21. We had a wonderful time. It was not crowded and the ambiance was mellow. We tried quite a few of the items from the menu and they were all very delicious. My personal favorites for the evening was the strawberry salad with 18yr aged balsamic vinegar dressing, the Alpaca sausage and the pork ribs(special). The owner came out and chatted it up with us and shared her experience sourcing the items for the menu. The Alpaca farmer was seated next to us. We had a wonderful time, amazing dinner and they were very accommodating to us as we were the last to leave the restaurant. We did not feel rushed out the door. Would recommend to lovers of food. Give it a try. Was ~ $ 50 a person including drinks.

My new go to spot! Great farm to table food, exceptional service and menu advice, not to mention everything was gluten free. Yes even the cheesy bread and alpaca sausage! You can tell they put love into the food!

My family goes to Brooklyn House for all of our celebrations, and we LOVE it! We have a variety of dietary restrictions as well as several who can eat whatever they like and everyone always feels happy and full when we leave. The food is always delicious and the service is welcoming and gracious. Highly recommended!

What a gem! Delicious food, great atmosphere and great service. Farm to table means that the menu may not be exactly as described but no less delicious. The food is prepared when ordered so it takes time but we used this time to talk and have a drink. There’s a large list of fun mocktails if you want alcohol free and, of coarse, there’s beer, wine, and cocktails. We were lucky we ate early otherwise we wouldn’t have had a table without a reservation. We are thrilled this restaurant is in our neighborhood and will be regulars.

It’s taken me a while to write this review mostly because the entire experience was just so lovely I didn’t want to let go of it quite yet. After three long days of work and a conference with coworkers in Corvallis we stumbled upon this gem(thank you, Unilocalers), which was kinda sorta off the beaten path towards home. Our brains and bones were weary and nothing could restore us quite like a great meal. And then here you were. A little bungalow restored into a quaint dining space that showcased local whole foods like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Being a person who eats whole foods and gluten free 90% of the time(yeah, sometimes I indulge in the dark side) I kinda geeked out over the menu(which I’d researched prior to coming). The radishes with butter. Holy cow. ERMEHGERD! Who knew??? I crave these now and I used to despise radishes! I had the Edelweiss sausage. The small plate. And more than half came home with me. I can’t imagine the size of the regular serving! A lovely Rosé complimented the meal… Perfect. My coworkers both thoroughly enjoyed their meals as well. We all finished with coffee and the cashew cheesecake. One piece split amongst three was plenty. Who knew a cashew cheesecake could be so freakin’ amazing??? I have to comment on the use of local sources. Bravo. And thank you for displaying books that represent the whole food lifestyle around your establishment. Even in the bathroom! Loved it. With all the great places to eat in PDX this is one worth coming back to again and again… And not just for the food but also for the amazingly attentive and knowledgeable service!

This place is special. The décor/atmosphere is a little old-school-cottagey-homey or something, but the food is organic, local, unique amazingness(with lots of options for people who are gluten free or vegan or grain free ) with great high quality drink wine/beer/cocktail options. The woman who runs the restaurant is incredibly sweet, very knowledgeable and goes the extra mile for customers. You can tell she’s passionate and loves what she does!

European influenced restaurant set in what seems to be an old residential house. I Tried the spicy alpaca sausage with cheesy bread and marinara dipping sauce with a Caesar salad(as recommended by an owner who worked as our server this evening). Everything was absolutely fantastic and I was completely satiated. My girlfriend had The Canna Tonic cocktail: delicious. The atmosphere is nice and cozy and everyone was super friendly. The place isn’t really that expensive, either. I loved the experience and will definitely be back soon.

Our German conversation group has been meeting here twice a month for many years and we love this place. Good food, drinks and atmosphere! The food has greatly improved since ownership changed after it closed its doors as the former Berlin Inn. The only improvement I would like to see is beer on draft.

There is a lot to like and dislike about this restaurant. The server we had was very knowledgeable, but also very inefficient. She was very complementary of the food, but not very specific about what we could expect. For instance, The alpaca Schnitzel is quite gamey, and having never had alpaca, this would have been nice to know. However it is served with a very flavorful and clean tasting plate of food. I ordered the tri-tip steak and was disappointed that it was so chewy and medium well. I had mentioned that I like my steak as rare as possible, but would forfeit that For tenderness if needed. The plate had excellent flavor, but the mushrooms were so infused that it was difficult to appreciate their delicate flavor, and there were not many of them. The presentation DEFINITELY could use some work. Both our entrées looked very unappetizing, and my dessert was not much better. It came with Golden raspberries that were delicious, but frankly looked Premasticated. For all the potential for cozy intimacy that this place has, there were no tables that were very inviting. Our table felt really cramped even though two of us shared a four top. The cocktails were delicious, and I’m tempted to go back, but our stomachs are feeling a little rough today and steak should definitely not be that chewy.

Excellent Menu from Heart2Heart Farms on 2÷14÷16. As a professional Chef, I have a discerning palate that is not easily impressed. After each course of their Valentines Day tasting menu, I was VERY impressed. Great place, great ambience, AMAZINGFOOD, and best of all: excellent customer service and great staff all around.

If I could dish out 3.5 stars, this place would get it, but I opted to round down for a few reasons. First off, the entire place is 100% gluten free… they just choose not to advertise it at all for some odd reason. The vibe was ultra elitist. Let me explain: My husband and I called about an hour ahead and were told they were at capacity, so we made a reservation for 8 pm. We arrived right on time and were told to wait for a table to be cleaned. No big deal, right? We waited for about 10 minutes, then our future server told us that it’d be a few minutes and to look at some menus. Okay. 10 minutes later our future server breezes by us again and tells us he is putting a table cloth on our table and to wait a while longer. I made the mistake of coming hungry assuming we’d be seated at the time of our reservation. A few minutes later a woman told us to go to the back and look for a table for 4 with two place settings. Um, okay. On our way back there, future server swooped next to us(carrying a huge tray of food) and decided to show us this table. Thanks? We’d had plenty of time to look over the menu already, but future server was busy serving the… two other populated tables in our section of the restaurant. Wait, I thought they were super busy and at capacity? Maybe not. There were 4 empty tables in our dining area and I had seen a few others on the way back there. Weird. Whatever. At this point I just want to order my appetizers and dinner… but I end up waiting almost another 10 minutes to do so. I actually had to flag future waiter down to get him to take my order. After this initial period of being forced to wait, the service picked up a little bit(definitely not by much though). The food is pretty good, which is the one saving grace at this restaurant. I honestly have no idea if they were severely understaffed or just didn’t like the look of us, but those other tables remained empty through my whole meal… No one likes to be made to wait when they’re hungry, and shouldn’t have to if a reservation has been made. That said, I will now begin my review of the food The bread they serve is from New Cascadia Bakery, and it is amazing. The garlic butter they serve is reminiscent of Lebanese garlic sauce, without the bite. I enjoyed their cheese plate alright, though am not fond of blue cheese and that is one of the 3 they serve. I did enjoy the other two, one seemed to be a white cheddar and the other maybe a smoked gouda… my server neglected to inform me and I don’t recall it being on the menu, but perhaps I missed it. I did enjoy the local berries, apples and honey served with the cheese. Overall a lovely plate. For my entrée I decided to order the pasta in hot pepper sauce with pork. It was pretty good. Much better with an extra side of bread(which took asking two people to receive, even though it costs extra). I dislike mushrooms, so the chef made it for me with carrots instead. It was a phenomenal substitution and I’m glad that he suggested it. My husband had the tri tip steak. It was about $ 27, and pretty overcooked. Not bad, but not worth almost thirty bucks. We decided to share a dessert, the one cane sugar free dessert item they had. It was a honey, lemon curd and egg white«pudding» with fresh fruit. Without the fruit the pudding tasted a bit like cleaning products, and there wasn’t much pudding-like about the texture, however with the fruit it was really, really good. The chef here seems to have a good concept of flavors, and it shows in the food. I just wish that we had felt more welcomed by the wait staff, especially since we spent almost $ 60. Perhaps next time they won’t be so… «busy»? I hope to try their alpaca sausage in the future.

I went here for someone’s birthday back in November and they were very nice and accommodating. There was about 25 – 30 of us as well as some other people who were also there to grab a quick bite. It took us a very very long time to get the food we ordered, because of how many people were there. I ordered the Edelweiss(spelling) Sausage with sauerkraut and potatoes. ITWASSOGOOD. I loved it, and was worth the wait. I also had some hot mustard to pair with the meal and it was killer, very good. They provided great service and the food was really good to me. The only reason why I docked one star is because it’s quite pricey, it’s about $ 14 for a small/normal plate, and was about $ 26 dollars for a large plate. The place literally is a house, well, a restaurant in a house but it’s very nice. I love the atmosphere and decorations.

Perfect place to take people with food allergies because they are super careful. My mom has a gluten and dairy allergy so when I first read the reviews I knew this would be a great place to bring her. She completely fell in love with this place and I’m sure I’ll be coming here every time she visits. BASKETOFSOURDOUGHBAGUETTE($ 5) 5⁄5: You must get this! Warmed bread from New Cascadia Bakery served with garlic butter or garlic oil. My mom was so happy to see this since it’s been far too long since she’s been able to get gluten-free bread served at a restaurant. The bread was delicious too and I could hardly tell it was gluten free because it was soft and fluffy. DRYROASTEDKALE($ 6⁄9) 5⁄5: I love kale and and this dish was incredible with crispy kale served with a great tangy dressing of 18 year old balsamic vineagar, garlic oil, lemon juice, carmelized red onions, and hazelnuts. GOLDEN&REDBEETSSALAD($ 7⁄10) 5⁄5: Beets are one of my other favorite vegetables so I had to order this. It was another yummy salad with sweet beets served with greens, hazelnuts and should have been 120 day aged goat cheese but I had it swapped. GRILLEDSWEETPOTATOES($ 7) 5⁄5: Extremely delicious and you must order it. The sweet potatoes are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with the delicious rich flavor of bacon and onions. The bits of crispy bacon were like hidden treasure I kept digging for. HUNGARIANPORKGOULASHPASTA($ 13⁄20) 4⁄5: Gluten free pasta that was quite chewy and didn’t have a strong rice flavor which is a problem for many gluten free pastas. Sauce was nice and dish also had homegrown sauerkrout and sweet hot peppers. LAMBPASTASPECIAL(?): I didn’t try this dish because I don’t like lamb but my parents said it was very good. RIB-EYESTEAK($ 30) 3⁄5: I would skip this dish. We ordered it cooked medium but it was closer to medium well and flavor wasn’t very special. It had a pepper cream sauce with grilled potatoes and roasted veggies on the side.

Depressing. Dingy. Disorganized. The lunch I had in a party of four was passable. Not great, but edible, I think they try, but their execution lacks. Lunch for a party of 4 cost us $ 75 less tip(and I do always tip, but wondered why this time) for our meals, sans desert but coffee and a appetizer plate of crostini which really didn’t set my heart on fire. But had I not made huge effort to get my party there to set down for lunch, I would have left on arrival. The reason for our gathering was personal, but I see little reason to return. nowhere close to accessible for elders or ADA concerns.

I love this place. I have only been a few times, but each time has been lovely. The staff is wonderful, they are so sweet and they clearly care about the food they are serving. The food is all gluten free, and they will cater to any diet that they can. The food is divine! There are not a lot of options, and I would like to see more variety on the menu, but the few items they do have are well executed. If you are a meat eater, try the braised rabbit alfredo. Amazing. Ambiance is perfect for either a casual night dining or a romantic date. Dress up or dress down. I love those types of places.
