It’s a bit misleading to call this a bookstore. There are a few shelves of books, tucked away behind what looks like an adult magazine collection(I didn’t get too close). If you’re looking for Chinese books, head down Broadway to Great Wall Books & Art. They have a much larger selection, and a much more comfortable browsing environment.

Like most all the stores in Chinatown, China Book Store is cramped and filled to the brim… in this case with books. Why am I huge fan of this store? I really appreciate the depth of their selection. It’s not a matter of some pretty coffee table fare with the obligatory pictures of the Great Wall. These aren’t Berlitz books, telling you how to find the opera house or the next train. It’s a legitimate bookstore for Chinese customers looking for anything from novels to dictionaries to medical books. Amongst the books are calendars and other odds and ends by the counter — but the bulk is taken up with books. There’s a lot of science and historical fare as well. I’ve always been impressed with the selection. The prices are not cheap. However, I expect that much of that lies in the fact that these are coming from Hong Kong and other Chinese cities. It’s a fun place to browse for an hour or so.
