It’s a small little bar upstairs that offers a surprisingly fun environment and great crowd. The bartenders are all young and friendly and there is a great selection of beer for being such a hole in the wall type of place. Recommend stopping by here for a few drinks on your way to a more«dancy» bar or club, as this is mainly just a bar for socialization and is very brightly lit with ample seating.

After my first encounter with this bar on a Saturday night, I won’t be returning because: 1) The crown isn’t very diverse 2) The beer selection isn’t very large 3) Way TOO loud. I had to shout over the music trying to have a conversation with a friend 4) Kind of filthy…

Has many different kinds of beers. They even give you a card to punch for each beer you get. When you tried them all, you get a badge with your name on the wall. I liked their pickled eggs. I had their pastrami sandwich but it was a little small. They have lots of TVs in there with all the games on. Its kind of a small bar and has a few tables inside and outside.

I met a large group of people for a friend’s 40th birthday party. His goal: get a plaque on the wall after finishing 70 beers from the drink menu. That’s right, Murphy’s has a menu with 70 imports from all over the world! We got started around 6pm, and by 7:30, had about half of the 70 numbers on the drink card punched with about 15 people in the party. By 8:30, we crushed the 70 drinks and my friend was filling out what he wanted engrave on his plaque! You can see the plaque wall from the pictures. Some people have visited and had numerous plaques over time. I’m happy to be a part of my friend’s first of many plaques, I’m sure. There is seating along a balcony overlooking 2nd Street, and the seating inside overlooks the racquetball club. I enjoyed watching the football games on the TV. The pub has an addicting«ring and hook» game, which seemed silly, but after a few beers, became a mission. The game is a simple silver ring dangling from the ceiling on a string. Swing the ring, like a pendulum, and try to catch it on the hook which is on a door a few feet away. Took a few minutes, but I finally got it. Two missions accomplished! There are plenty of bars and pubs along 2nd Street, but this one offers a simplistic bar experience attractive to more of the local crowd. It’s location at the top of a staircase, makes it a hidden gem. If you’re not paying attention, you’ll walk right by it.

Really cool place to hang out. They have a pretty good selection of drinks. Their wings were either $ 0.50 or $ 0.60 per wing, and they came with celery, carrots, and ranch. The wings were surprisingly good. I recommend sitting outside on a nice day!

Decent selection of beers and most importantly, served as cold as it could possibly be — per the husband. Not only was the glass stored in the freezer, the kegs apparently were chilled too — the beer made the glass even colder! Friendly staff, plenty of tables and seats, TVs, a «ring and hook» game named according to Jane H., AND open windows into the racquetball courts next door(think boozing and poking fun at players!). Just watch your step going up and down the stairs.

First of all, I decided from now on, to write 5 Positive reviews for every Negative because I believe the good business’s deserve our praise more than others need our criticism. So about Murphys, Besides the reputation of having every beer known to Man Kind ! I will praise it for friendly staff, customers and atmosphere, Also Healthy bar food, no kidding, Highly recommend any Salad, but especially the Murphy Salad, Sandwiches with Squaw Bread, and the Cave Man Veggies. Great view to watch People on the balcony overlooking Second Street any afternoon.

This place is a gem! The staff and owner are extremely friendly and the beer list is usually good. I go for the hot pastrami sandwich and their salad with homemade Italian dressing. Most people don’t even know they serve food but I highly recommend it! Never too crowded and if you like to watch sports they always show games, and if you like to people watch you can either watch people playing racket ball in the gym next door or sit on the patio and watch people walk up and down 2nd(since its on the second floor)

Does your stool not wake the neighbors? Murphy ‘s has the loudest stools this side of the Rio Grande. Screeches and roars like a prehistoric pteradactyl searching for its next mate… plus free Cheese-its

This place is about as sad as a bar can get without hard liquor — and just to be clear, there is no liquor. It’s sort of a humorless bar for humorless people. People say age is just a number. So if you are 30 something but feel like you’re 50 something or 60 something, this is definitely your bar. Something important to note is that when you cash out, they don’t give you an itemized check. They just tell you your total. You’ve got no way of knowing which item cost how much. I think they want you to look at the total, make a guess at tax, subtract the price of food(which you needed to memorize from the menu), and then use the left over amount to figure out the cost of your beverages. The food isn’t really Irish per se, except that it’s uninspired and bland. There’s an outdoor balcony. Outside, the stone surface of the barstand gets very hot. You can’t rest your elbows on it – too hot to touch. That area seems to be strictly for cigarette smokers. Even though its outside, the air is very smokey. Inside the bar is kinda dark and dingy. There’s a couple tvs playing sports, and no one is watching. It’s like Moe’s on the Simpsons, but not quite so upscale. To make up for not having hard liquor, they have a «beer club». You get a card listing all the of different bottled beers in the fridge, when you drink one, your card gets checked off. The object is to try everything once and complete the card. They have a wall of names of people who have completed their cards multiple times. But lets be honest. Nothing says amateur drinker like wanting to complete a card with a list of beers on it. That’s the kind of idiotic nonsense they do at frat bars near college campuses. I think Murphy’s is where those same frats go 10 years after graduation, when they realize that day-to-day existence is an exercise in nihilism. There’s a jukebox with an Internet connection — thus the selection is virtually infinite. You can play pretty much any tune from any genre. Very cool. Except … you’re at the mercy of the bartender’s musical taste. When I walked in the door, the system was playing 60s top 40 pop. Gary Pucket, Tommy James, etc. I put in $ 10 and keyed up some music that was a little more engaging and fun. Didn’t matter to anyone in the bar but me — the customers are all zombies. But apparently it did matter to the bartender Lynn. When Miles Davis«So What» was playing, she decided customer music selection time was over, and switched the system to the radio — a classic rock station. And honestly, if you’re pulling the plug on Miles so you can listen to Billy Squire … you’re kind of a nitwit. But if you want to be depressed and hate life … Murphy’s is totally the place to grab a beer.

What’s not to love? Friendly staff, great beer and wine, amazing food, prime location on 2nd street… this place has it all! I love coming to Murphy’s at any time of the day to sit on the patio and enjoy the amazing view of 2nd Street. The food is really good and offers a variety of healthy options among the traditional bar favorites. I highly recommend making a visit if you haven’t already!

Okay I admit that I come here to challenge the BF and sometimes his friends on a game of «ring and the hook». That’s my official naming of this game which no one really cares for lol. We seem to always come here while strolling 2nd Street or after dinner. They’re usually open and never deny us entrance. I love that Murphy’s is a local homey bar if that makes any sense. I totally violate the juke box and force it to play country music while sharing a pitcher of ice coke tasty beer and trying to conquer the ring in the hook game. The crowd here has always been cool and sometimes we are friends for the few hours that we are there. The bar is a decent size bar and the bartenders are always nice. I never had a bad experience with them being jerks or anything like that. Always friendly and laid back. The bar has a cool balcony that overlooks 2nd Street and you can certainly sit outside and drink and enjoy the cool breezy air. And smoke if that’s your forte. The bathroom is a little leery but which bar’s bathroom isn’t? It’s clean but small but gets the job done!

I have to say that this is one of the best spots on second. It’s on the top floor of the Belmont and the view is uncanning. What really made this place feel like home was the manager, Hope. She was on top of everything and even though murphys is a bar, it also serves food, and I’m a big foodie. Her customer service is what will keep me coming back and keep me recommending to others.

I like Murphy’s for its neighborhood pub feel and lack of «Panama Joe’s-on-a-Saturday-night» scene that makes me want to scream. Yes, they usually have sports on the TVs; yes, they are heavily focused on beer; and yes, there are usually college kids in there… and I am not into any of those things. But they do have a wine that I like, there is always a place to sit and the balcony outside is cool for people watching on the street down below. There are few bars on Second Street that are good for a drink or two, where you can still hear and talk to the people that you’re with, without ending up at a full service restaurant. I personally have outgrown Acapulco Inn and have been around long enough to remember what Dogz used to be called before it was Dogz(ahem). People who are new to Murphy’s and like beer are always excited about that passport so it’s a fun place to take friends. I notice everyone has big ambitions about documenting their consumption of 70 beers; although by the very nature of that quest, few probably stay focused and organized enough to make it happen(no one I’ve taken there ever has). But it’s a neat idea and a great way to try new ones you might not know about. I almost feel like I am in on a secret bringing people there because not everyone realizes there’s a bar at the top of those stairs.

Hockey, Shipyard & Dave = Best bar in Long Beach. Even though they employ a die-hard Buffalo Sabres fan they still put my Bruins game on for me. This was amazing since we had just gone to another local bar who promised to put the game on and then told us it was over when we go to the bar. The game was not over, the staff were lazy. Thankfully, Murphy’s saved my day! The next time I went they had managed to get Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale. Most bars in SoCal will say they have it when they actually have Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin. not the same. This divey gem is my go to in Long Beach. No only do they have great staff but a great location and they cater to their customers. Also, their prices are ridiculously low for this area! Highly recommend.

This place is a lot of fun! I went during the summer, on a week day so it wasn’t too crowded. My two friends were veterans – they wanted to keep hole punching their Beer passports. I’m not a fan of beer(I know, stop throwing tomatoes at me) but they had a pear cider that I really liked and I had two of those and was still functioning. The have this amazing pizza bread that is melt-in-your-mouth cheesy and wonderful. Their homemade salsa is also a must-try. It’s located on second street and is upstairs, and when you go out on the balcony there is a lovely view. Perfect for drunk selfies(jk don’t do it). They also have this fun game where you try and swing this metal circle onto a hook in the wall. I successfully did that at least 4 times, so hah, friends! Anyway it’s got a great atmosphere, a huge selection of drinks, and a great location. Try it out!
