Soupçon and El Sancho food carts are both permanently closed, and they’ve opened a restaurant together called Barrio.

Amazing soups at an amazing price. Soupçon has a combo special with El Sancho where you can mix and match soup with tacos or tamales from the cart next door for $ 6! I got a delicious Thai sweet potato curry soup with chunks of fresh ginger and a salad, yum. My husband loved the potato leek soup and two turkey mole tacos from El Sancho. Great job guys!

Soup! Really, really good soup! If you only have a little bit of folding money and you are looking for a great lunch in Bend then pull off of Greenwood at Harriman, across from the old Boomtown building. Walk up, order pretty much anything, and you’ll probably be extremely happy. So happy that you’ll return, even on the days when you have plenty of money. Because this little cart serves up some of the BEST food in Bend. Sandwiches are a good bet too. Only thing that’s hit or miss for me is the salads.(Shrug.) You’re welcome…

Thanks to Amy B, we learned about Soupçon and stopped by the other day for our first visit to enjoy a delectable Cuban styled pork and black bean soup for take out lunch. Perfectly seasoned with lots of pork that was tender from long simmering, the soup was a winner. The Soupçon cart location was shared by a vendor offering up homemade tamales and both the folks buying yummy soup as well as those buying the tamales seemed to be happy repeat customers. A good sign! We discovered Soupçon is owned by a chef whose food we enjoyed a couple of years ago when he was executive chef at swanky Kokanee Café in Camp Sherman. The meal was so remarkable that we commented to the server just how good it was as each course built on the next. Turns out the server was also the restaurant’s co-owner, which is how we came to learn the name of the chef when she asked him to come out to meet us. So our recommendaiton would be that if you want to enjoy take out from Soupçon to take advantage of the opportunity while you can. Because from our view, the chef is just too talented to be satisfied with being a street vendor chef for long! And we can’t wait to see if he ends up in a kitchen in a Bend restaurant because if he’s cooking, we want to eat there!

If you’ve grown bored of the rest(–aurant scene), come try the best. Soupçon is an original concept serving up hot soup & grilled cheese dumplings from a humble soup cart in downtown Bend. Soupçon sets up shop each day outside of the The Blacksmith Restaurant on Greenwood/Harriman. For me, its the reason for an afternoon stroll on a break from work. Hearty offerings like short rib vegetable chili, or lentil with root veggies and cranberry, make the changing weather a lot more fun. And then there’s Thursday, my favorite soup day. Curried Pumpkin soup with coconut, chickpeas, and fresh basil. I’m not vegan, but with a vegan option this tasty, I’ve already got one foot on the wagon. All the soups are paired with a creative bread & cheese dumpling, called a knodel, it’s the chef’s take on a classic grilled cheese. Sometimes they’ll have roasted garlic and mozzarella, other times corriander and jack cheese, there’s always something new in these dunkable creations. I was out late on a Friday night, starving after hitting the dance floor at The Blacksmith, only to stumble outside to find — Soupçon?! — at their usual spot. I thought I was dreaming. I pinched myself and the heavenly vision remained. I should’ve known from the aromas(and the growing crowd) that this was really happening. I waited(not so patiently, I’ll admit) in line, and got the best late night food ever, a knodel dog(yes thats right, a knodel wrapped around a polish sausage on stick). It was served with a pickled vegetable & chipotle ketchup, & the fact that I remember all those details from that wild night attests to the quality & goodness of Soupçon.
