I almost feel bad leaving a mediocre review because the hairstylist I went to no longer works here, but my experience at this salon was… A little disappointing. I never really got what I wanted, after three visits and showing pictures(knowing I didn’t have the hair lingo down to express what I wanted to do with my hair). I thought we were understanding each other. Then I was charged full price for what should have been a «retouch» at the two subsequent appointments. I just paid because I’m one of those shy people and assumed it was my fault for misunderstanding, or maybe because I have a lot of hair they had to use more products and time… but it kinda sucked and I didn’t really like my hair. At one point my hairstylist went to go give a men’s cut and had someone else rinse my hair and I sort of just felt in the way. Also I upgraded to have Olaplex added and they forgot to give me the take home stuff; I had to get it mailed to me. They have a sort of points/reward system at this salon which is a great idea, but they never awarded points to the person who referred me here. Aside from that stuff it was clear they really are trying to run a tight ship and I may have had a better experience with someone with more ‘invested’ in the salon. It sounds like a great place if you can build rapport with one hairstylist you like and become a «regular», but I was a little underwhelmed and overlooked. Learned my lesson

I absolutely LOVE Jet Black Hair & Studio. I have been going here for just over two years and have had various stylists and I must say that they are all amazing. The atmosphere is great with good lighting, fun music and trendy décor. They have a ton of different options to pick from for hair color and toners and will actually keep the color combination that they use on your hair in the computer system so that you can come back and get the same color again. My stylist Savanna is amazing(I’m almost hesitant to write a review because I’m scared it will be impossible to book with her). She has a great way of always doing exactly what I want with my hair even when I don’t know what I want. I got a beautiful baleage from her yesterday and gave her freedom with the toner and she nailed it! The trim she gave me was exactly what I needed and she even finished off my hair with a bit of a curl to add more body(because my hair is extremely flat). If you are looking for a nice place for great quality service at a reasonable price I would try Jet Black!(you’ll never go back) Update: I feel the constant need to continuously update my review as my experience is just so good every time. My hair always looks great(To the point that I often just let Savanna do what she thinks will look good) and trusting people with my hair is a BIG step. Savanna also does makeup at the salon and has given me an awesome makeover(so sad I don’t have any pics) it truly was amazing. Her knowledge and skills for both hair and makeup are a cut above everyone who has ever done my hair and makeup.

As an Asian without typical Asian hair, I’ve been on a mission to find a place that is willing and able to make me blonde without looking like I work in the adult film industry. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but not the look I was going for. I also wanted a cut — something fresh and low maintenance. After hearing good things and discussing on the Unilocal boards, I called last week to ask if there was anyone who specializes in Asian hair. The receptionist was very nice and honest and said there wasn’t anyone who specializes in that, but that all of the stylists are good at what they do and that she was sure one of them would be able to do it. I had heard this story before and was hesitant, but took her suggestion and scheduled a consultation with Leslie later that week. The consultation only took about 10 minutes and I explained to Leslie what I wanted — ashy blonde, no caramel or copper because it goes too orange too fast on my hair, and a cut that will take anything dead and broken off, regardless of length. I showed her a few photos of my ideas and she, too, was honest about what may or may not be possible. Since my hair is more dark brown than black and fairly fine, and I didn’t want a solid color, she suggested an ombré(essentially gradient hair color) and a lob(long bob). I had previously read in her profile on their website that she likes to do ombrés, so I was hopeful that it would turn out. I booked an appointment for yesterday morning, one week after the consultation, and was advised that it would take about three hours. It actually took three and a half, but time went by much faster than I thought it would. The décor was modern, bright, and colorful, so it’s not like I was sitting in a stark white room with nothing visually appealing to look at. I know she didn’t use Olaplex to lighten my hair, but whatever it was, it didn’t have a strong or terrible smell, and didn’t burn or feel heavy. I overheard another coworker make a suggestion as to what colors to mix and use, but I heard Leslie say, «No, no orange,» and I was so happy that she stuck to what I had asked. I was super excited and optimistic throughout the whole process, but also nervous as unsure of what it would all look like at the end. When I first saw my wet hair in the mirror, I was honestly disappointed that it wasn’t as light as I wanted, but I was warned that it wouldn’t be. After blow drying it looked much lighter, of course, and after some more cutting and styling, I loved it more and more. She knew I wanted a shocking blonde, so she advised that I could come back in a couple of months to get a cooler blonde, but didn’t want to process my hair too much at one time, especially to avoid orange tones and damage. I really appreciated this and was very pleased with how it turned out. One of my coworkers actually said, «What did you do to your hair? I didn’t think it would look good but it does. It suits you!» Kudos to Leslie for getting it right! With the cut, color, shampoo, and tip, I spent about $ 300, which sounds like a lot, but is comparable to other salons and totally worth it here. It’s so hard to find a salon and stylist that will work with you to get as close as possible to the look you want. I wanted honesty, and I got it. Everyone there was helpful and great to talk to and I’d absolutely come back.

I went to jet black in January of this year after doing a lot of research into different hair salons through Unilocal. And this place just screamed AWESOME! I hadn’t had my hair dyed in about a year, and the last place I had gone, and had been going for a few years but never seeing the same person twice(Mahogany Salon and Spa in Stittsville) had really missed the mark on what I wanted, which was a light ashy blonde. It was way to golden for my liking but, whatever. So I booked an appointment with Colby and the moment I walked into the salon I felt so welcomed! I absolutely loved the atmosphere, the music, how bright and colourful it was. It was unlike any salon I had been too, ever. About five minutes after I got in Colby came over and introduced herself and we sat down and talked about what I wanted and she was all for it! So we got started, all in the highlighting of my entire head took about 2 hours and 4 bowls of blondor. Because I have a lot of hair Washed, and toned, and wow oh wow was I ever in love with it, even when wet I was just in aww of how much I loved it. Once a couple inches had been cut off and it was blown out, I was speechless I was so so in love with it! I have never loved my hair so much! I was also really impressed with the price, at Mahogany I was used to being charged about 10 $ for the extra bowls of dye used, and the extra time because they never booked big enough slots for all of my hair. So not being charged for that here was amazing! As well they have student discounts!!!(20% off 3 days of the week) Which is so awesome for someone with a tight budget like mine! All in it was about 170 $ which is absolutely phenomenal when I was expecting 200 $ with the discount! And I love my hair!!! I’m going in tomorrow to get my roots touched up, and to see Colby, and I can honestly say this is the first time I’m seeing the same stylist twice, which is big for me! I would, and do, recommend Jet Black, and Colby, to EVERYBODY.

Been coming for over a year consistently and I can’t recommend this place enough. It’s colourful, lively, full of artistic souls, has EXCELLENT customer service. I’m actually sitting in here now as my jet black dye sets. Just reflected with my stylist Colby that we’ve been together almost a year! I’ve gone red, blonde and jet black, highlights, razor layers and asymmetric undercuts. Love it love it love it! Ilona and leslie and Colby have their pulse on what looks good and what’s in style. They’re friendly, trustworthy and competent. They’re always improving so come in and check out what’s stylin!

I’ve been in Ottawa for over a decade… it wasn’t until Jet Black opened that I finally found the ultimate salon. Ilona is truly an artist and is so passionate about what she does. Best hair stylist I’ve ever had. +++ The whole team there is awesome. They’ve thought of everything. xo

Visited Ottawa on business. I randomly decided to have my hair done during my stay in Ottawa. I found this hair salon through Unilocal and decided to book an appointment with Tanya(on the same day). Now, my hair was in terrible condition — dry and brittle as well as fading colour or should I say colours. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. Nicely laid out salon. I had given Tanya creative freedom but with one request — to beautify my hair. I must say that at the end of the process, my hair looked incredibly different. I walked out from the salon feeling much renewed. Tanya, thank you once again. I enjoyed our conversation and the end result of your genius = happy client.

I moved to Ottawa 2 years ago from Montréal and since moving, I have had nothing but bad experiences at salons here in Ottawa. So much so, that I would go back to Montréal to get my hair done. I couldn’t find a stylist that I was on the same level with and that«got» what I was looking for. I heard about Jet black from a friend at work and even though I have not had a great experience anywhere in the city, I decided to give a try. I got an appointment with Erin for a cut. I wanted a trim and to add some layers and life to my always pin straight flat, lifeless hair. Erin TOTALLY got what I was looking for! My hair that never has any movement to it, now always looks fantastic and full of volume. Really, one of the best cuts I have ever had. I decided based on a fantastic first time at the salon, I would go back for a colour and do something a little daring. I went from a bright blonde ombré to a really rich copper red. I was really nervous but Erin assured me that no matter what, I would not leave the studio with anything less than perfect hair. Needless to say, my hair looks fantastic! The colour is radiant, shiny, natural looking and she really took the time to make sure that I was 100% happy with it. Do yourself, your hair and your wallet a favour and hit up this spot. I almost hate saying that because I have a feeling I am going to have a really hard time getting an appointment once all the women in the city find this salon :)
