The recently introduced burgers are tasty and a good mid-price option if you’re looking for something other than the asian-style cuisine that pervades the area(and are trying to avoid Mackers/MickeyD’s and KFC). Service completely depends on who happens to be on shift. We’ve been here once for food and the female waitress we had was sweet and the chef was friendly. However, we’ve stopped here a few times for coffee and each time was extremely uncomfortable. We really wanted to give this place a better review, but during our visits the male barista on shift would glare at us and ask for our orders rudely, and generally make us feel unwelcome. Given all the other coffee options in the area, we ultimately searched for and found other cafés to get our fix — now we prefer Something for Jess or GG Espresso.

Meh. Average. Nothing too special about this place.

Meh. Average coffee, average breakfast. Had high hopes but probably wouldn’t be back. Super friendly staff but don’t think the products are fantastic. Coffee was way too intense for me– maybe its just me but it was super bitter I couldn’t finish it. Breakfast was just average, my housemate and I got scrambled eggs with bacon & mushies and I think we could have made it better at home.

Project 8 has a real casual vibe — no airs or hoity toity fancy stuff, and it doesn’t even feel that self-consciously hipster either. But it’s a cool place, I’ll give ‘em that. That sort of casual vibe counts for the food and the coffee too — it’s nothing special, not over-thought or overly gourmet, but it definitely passes the yummy test. There’s a nice little space out the back with couches, which feels quite private and no one pressures you to order more if you’ve been there for a while. I’ve found the staff to be friendly but a tad forgetful, so sometimes you have to remind them if you’ve been waiting a while for your food.

Ultimo has always had a serious lack of good cafes. Well, that was until Project 8 was born. Recently opened, Project 8 has that part relaxed part hip and all awesome vibe going on that other cafes strive so hard to achieve. They do it so effortlessly that it almost seems to have come about by happy mistake. They are in their opening few weeks and the service is refreshingly enthusiastic and friendly. Eugene and Mariana were both lovely to talk to and will genuinely make you feel right at home. Here’s hoping the service continues to remain upbeat as the café’s popularity grows but I don’t doubt that it will. The breakfast and lunch menu offers open toasties, a mix of sandwiches, healthy salads and baked hot pots. Freshly baked treats, such as brownies, almond biscuits and banana bread, line the front cabinets and you can also find coffee, tea, frappes and smoothies. The mango and coconut smoothie($ 4.50) with real mango chunks and the right amount of sweet was spot on to the way I like it. Timber benches with stools deck out the main area, a few couches can be found in the back and a quieter study nook upstairs is perfect for the local uni students. There is also free wifi. A loyalty card with a free cup of coffee after every nine bought will help to encourage regulars. Project 8 definitely has me intrigued and I can’t wait to get back to try their food.
