This place is ok if you can get a room for a reasonable price that will justify staying there. Otherwise the place has mediocre room and bad customer service: I got checked in to the room that was already occupied by another guests…

Stayed here for one night. No problems at all. Room very clean, bathroom well appointed. Special mention to Troy on the front desk — super-friendly and efficient and couldn’t do enough to help you. Finally — a hotel with a decent set menu option for dinner! The travelling sales rep’s friend! Buy not being«greedy» and over-charging for their room service, I had dinner in the hotel for once, and the hotel got the business. Not many hotels do this, and over-price their F&B by a long way. Not here. However, whilst advertising the $ 25 «set menu special for 2 courses» on the little card in the room, *nothing* is mentioned on the card about the $ 5 «tray delivery fee» which brings the total to $ 30. I didn’t know this until it was delivered and I signed for the bill. A bit cheeky.(I wish I could get a job delivering room service trays… I think it must take about 2 minutes to bring a try from the restaurant to the room. at $ 5 for every 2 minutes that would make me on $ 150 per hour — not bad money! A really annoying and greedy part of staying in hotels the world over). Reasonably priced internet at this hotel too. Would come back — I liked it overall.

When I checked in they couldn’t find my booking so we spent 10 minutes figuring out my booking and what happened and where I was in the system. The air conditioning in the room was not heating the room(it was a cold night) and when i went to call the front desk my room phone didn’t work but as it was late I just had a warm shower and went to bed. I informed the front desk the air conditioning is not heating the room before i had breakfast at the hotel in the morning. They said they would get maintenance to look at it. What was on offer at the hotels ‘buffet breakfast’ was terrible with dry and crusty scrambled and poached eggs, slimy bacon and a lack of variety to chose from. When i returned to my room after the first day the air conditioning still wasn’t heating the room. I went to the front desk to let them know about the air conditioning and the phone, they came to the room and sorted the phone out and said they would have maintenance look at the air conditioner tomorrow and offered me an extra blanket. I used very little of the free wireless internet as it was just too slow, i mainly tethered to my iphone instead. In summary the people at the front desk were nice but I had no air conditioning, a bad breakfast, unusable internet and repeated visits to the front desk. We’ll never know if they ever fixed the air conditioner either.

Ahhhhhhccommodation, always one of the more stressful things about planning a trip. It’s one area where the locals aren’t great with recommendations, because they don’t often stay in hotels in their own cities! I took a plunge on the Rendezvous because it seemed like an okay area(close to central train station) and the price was right. A twenty-four hour front desk meant that I almost felt confident with checking in at 1am(my flight was late, so I was running late for my dinner appointment) – I phoned ahead to confirm my late check in just in case but I needn’t have, as the graveyard shift front desk clerk was charming and unfazed by the late hour. The room had a surprising amount of space in it for a standard hotel room(particularly as some hotel«standard rooms» can be real shoeboxes!). The Rendezvous was also accommodating(zing) with my request to have the king bed split into two singles — I mentioned it once when I put through my booking and didn’t have to reiterate it at any point, though I did let out a sigh of relief when I stepped into my room to see it had been done as requested. The minibar was decent, the bathroom supplies were decent. The Rendezvous is clearly still transitioning over from when it used to be a Mercure, as there were still some leftover Mercure-branded supplies. Could be confusing to some people, but hey — bonus stuff in the room is bonus stuff in the room, I don’t care what name’s on it. The area of town wasn’t quite as handy as I’d hoped, and it was also confusing for a couple of the drivers of taxis I caught. It WAS handy for my early-morning flight, because the airport train line runs through central station. It WASN’T handy for decent coffee on the weekend(the CBD doesn’t care for tourists, only office-workers). It WAS nice and quiet in the room. The bed WAS comfy and the pillows were soft and enormous. I probably wouldn’t stay here again because the location didn’t really suit me, but if it’s in the right area for you, go nuts at the Rendezvous.
