Once a year I come to visit when I am in England and what surprised me the most is that elder people sit amongst young people and they are all having a good time. Waiters there are very friendly, food is good and it has a relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of parking available, nice to sit outside. Will return definately.

Strange place is the old Richmond, not usually the place I would enter as I thought they had an age policy — nobody admitted under the age of 60. However this is a very friendly place despite what the pictures might suggest — the ridiculous number of England flags for the world cup make it look like a BNP social club but they are not a permananet feature, although having said that these things usually get left up until they have turned yellow and start to frey. Noty a great selection of beers, the theme is cheap and plentiful as the old fellas here will usually start at midday and go on drinking for ages which creates that strange, funny but baffling atmosphere you get with drunken old people. Friendly but you rarely know what the joke is — it’s generally the young one.

Narrow on the inside, overlapping the street on the outside, the Richmond feels like it occupies more space than it physically owns. Clutching leech-like to the corner of a building, the interior is little more than a corridor dominated by the slick, brass-tapped bar. Outside, there’s a barrier separating the patrons from meandering shoppers, like zoo animals. Standing at a table with a cider on a sunny day becomes a bizarre but engrossing experience as people straining with carrier bags and prams shuffle past. You feel like you’ve simply stopped dead in a busy thoroughfare and in some ways you have. This is the kind of place you could walk into, get a drink and walk out of without breaking stride. Good for one though, provided you don’t crack your scalp on the low toilet door. That’s never an attractive thing to do in front of shoppers.

This tiny little pub is easily overlooked despite its central location. It’s between Williamson Square and the Met Quarter shopping centre, 5 minutes walk from Mathew Street and all its famous establishments. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in character. You can sit outside on whicker chairs and people watch, or sit on leather stools inside. The clientele are mainly regulars; a combination of groups of old men and trendy musos/media people. Because it’s small, it can get very packed sometimes. I also like the décor inside, sort of vintage style, upmarket without being pretentious as the rest is kept simple.

Despite a major refurbishment last year this Pub remains faihfull to it’s regulars. Thr refurbishment was done in a symphathetic manner and this central pub is thriving and even now has a pavement café where can watch the world nflow bye.
