The bar was very busy and the resteraunt packed. Difficult to hear eachother talk. Food was great though and the chocolate fondu was amazing!

Had a staff xmas meal here the week before xmas. It was a manic sat nite, however the staff were all really polite both upstairs and down. The food didnt take forever to arrive and when it did it was really great! The cocktails were fab and the atmosphere inside was really good. Would def recommend to others, in fact weve booked to go back for a birthday gathering at the end of January.

Staff were fairly miserable until we were presented with the bill when they miraculously become cheerful and chatty. Service a little slow but prices were OK. Whilst we were there several customers came in from outside complaining that they’d been waiting too long for service. If you’re gonna stick a slice of lime in my wife’s Corona at least ask first eh? And I’ll have my Pepsi(even though I asked for Coke and you couldn’t be bothered to mention it was actually Pepsi) without 8 ice cubes thanks. Food was very bland, I had a burger and the missus had ribs both were really bland and unimpressive. Burgers were meaty but no other taste very bland. Hey and guess what, here’s a novel concept you serve it on a plate instead of a chopping board. Ribs were served with potatoes but were so overdone they were practically a mash. Nothing special at all. Conveniently they automatically add a 10% tip(call it a service charge if you thinks its more moral) onto the bill and make no mention of it at all, I had to ask the waitress to remove it. ;) Was our first visit but will not return as there is so much other choice so really no need to, even with one of their £5 off your next order vouchers we were given.

I agree with Fred’s review, it is pretty bang on. I have to say that I thought the food was better than expected, very flavourful. Excellent value for money with the voucher I had. The restaurant was comfortable, staff friendly and service what you would expect from a midrange restaurant. If you are out shopping in Exeter it’s a good location as the others said has a great patio for when the sun comes out.

Coal hold’s such a prominent position, it already has so much going for it. Sadly, that’s almost it though. The staff were very friendly & very helpful, but only when they came outside. We were sat outside & were waiting to order, waiting so long in fact that I went in to get menu’s so that we could order. I had to go in again to actually order because no one came out & then in again to pay! The food was ok, not the best £10 burger I’ve had, ok though. Not sure how often I’ll go, unless they can sort out there pretty poor service.

First of all let me say that this Bar and Grill sits on the site of the former locally owned Exeshed which disolved in April 2010(Exeshed was awesome and some of the staff have stayed on). Exeshed RIP Coal is a bar and grill the new owners seem to be upping their sales of food and lessening the cocktail market. It is what it says on the tin. Staff = Very pleasant Food = Exactly what you would expect Price = Average Value = Average Location = Opposite Debenhams Key points = Bang smack in the Centre of Exeter. It has Al Fresco options; which have been much needed during our early summer heat-wave. Overall _good atmosphere and we will go again soon and add to this brief review.
