I stumbled across this fine paddy themed bar many years ago. Nestled behind St Nicks market. It’s just far enough out the way to not be too busy. On my most recent visit I was prowling around the centre on a works Xmas do. So not at all interested in anything other than grog and lots of it ! This place is ideal for a drink. No fancy décor here This is dusty old school pub. I did notice a fine selection of crisps and a sign the read your welcome to bring your own lunch. I like this pub and shall be returning for more of their effortless charm.

The first time I ever went in this place was one of those lazy morning after the night before Sundays. We were enjoying a pint of the black stuff, some decent tunes(with the inevitable burst of U2) and a game of chess when the amazingly friendly bar man came over with a couple of old skool baskets of roast potatoes on the table. I mean, I know the Irish like their potatoes but the last thing we were expecting was some gorgeous free spuds with our liquid lunch. That is exactly what we got. I don’t know if this is common practice mind, so don’t go banking on the tatties. It is, however, indicative of the wonderful quirkiness of this beautiful little pub. More recently, myself and a bunch of pals took advantage of the sign which invites customers to bring their own lunch and grabbed a Pieminister from the nearby St Nics market and went and sat in Seamus O’Donnell’s with a nice jar of Bulmers to boot. What more do you want from a pub? Even when the place became momentarily overrun with a large boozy stag party it maintained it’s laid back appeal and welcoming allure. With so many pubs in the St Nics Market area to choose from this really ought to be up there with the best.

Seamus O’donnells is a tradition Irish pub Close to St Nicholas Market in the old city. It makes a welcome change in an area that has gone through a trendy makeover, that this traditional pub still holds it’s own and pulls in the punters. Serving one of the best pints of Guinness in Bristol, alongside real cask ales, local ciders and selection of wines, Seamus O’donnells has something for your more cultured of social drinker. They don’t actually serve food themselves which is a pity, but they do allow you to bring in food from one of the stalls on the market, which is great. I recommend getting some sausage and mash from St Nicks and eating it in here, perfect combo.

What you see with Seamus O’Donnell is what you get — an old fashioned Irish themed pub. Perfectly pleasant, but easily forgettable, think drinking hole comes equipped with its very own drunk man quietly falling asleep in the corner. I’ve only been in the once and had a pint of Thatcher’s after a stroll around St Nicholas market which is conveniently across the road. Would I go back? Probably not. But there’s service with a smile, fairly priced drinks and apparently karaōke on a Thursday. Maybe I will be back after all…
