The pub dates back to 1820’s when it was rebuilt. Interior retains many original features and for a town centre pub is truly traditional lots of dark wood and mismatched furniture. Extensive pub menu prices ok. Four real ales and two ciders on tap good quality but a bit expensive. Service was good. Found the pub very comfortable.

A good pub to go close to the beach and the Laines. Good vegetarian options to eat and cosy sofas to chat with friends while drinking a pint or mulled cider.

No, I am not one of these people who recommend this place so much! I am never coming back for one reason. I didn’t like the way they treat us. I found baristas very rude.

Walking into this place and seeing zebra and kangaroo included on the roast menu, I knew this was going to be my kind of pub! The food menu was extensive but I didn’t really get any further than the roastsin my perusal. They were out of kangaroo so it made for an easy choice — the stripy delights of zebra it would have to be. The meat was tender and lean and tasted a little like beef but with a real irony tang similar to liver. The rest of the roast was good but not exceptional. The pub is small but cosy and has further seating upstairs. I would have preferred to sit downstairs as there seemed to be more atmosphere here but there were no seats available. Overall, a lovely shabby-chic pub situated in the main shopping area of the lanes with an interesting and unique menu. Definitely one to try if you are looking for something a little different from the norm.

This place was recommended to me by another English girl I hung out with. She told me and my friend that they make a pretty good Sunday Roast here. Although my friend and I did not come on a Sunday we did enjoy the food and drinks here and I thought I had the best pub food in the UK so far. I ordered a Chicken Pot Pie and I think my friend ordered some sort of pasta dish with Haddock or some sort of fish doused in a creamy sauce. Both of those dishes were from the specials menu and I do not think they were on the regular menu. My meat pie dish came with mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots. I thought it was probably the best version of the dish I had so far, the chicken was fresh, tender, and tasty, the crust was flaky, but warm, chewy with a slight crisp. The vegetables were also good, freshly tasty and decently seasoned. The mashed potatoes tasted a little bland, but mixing it with the sauce of the meat pie made it tastier. I sampled my friend’s pasta dish, and I thought the fish was delicious, and the pasta was also tasty, almost«al dente» pasta. We ordered a pint of Guinness and a pint of Strongbow cider, and were pretty good drinks to finish the meal. Bartenders were really nice and patient, so this place also has great service. Another thing I liked about this pub was that it has a good amount of space, it has two floors in case the first floor gets crowded. We sat down on a couple of sofas, and they were so comfortable and relaxing, making it probably the most comfortable pub I have been to. The pub also has free wi-fi, which is great if you need internet. Overall, this is probably my favourite pub in Brighton and the probably the best I have been to because of the food, service, and atmosphere. I am definitely coming back on Sunday to get their Sunday Roast the next time I am in Brighton.

Almost 20 years after Nelson thwarted the axis of evil off the south-west coast of Spain, this pub was rebuilt, refurbished and renamed. Perhaps in 2525(if man is still alive) it will get a new lease of life as a gastropub called The General Petraeus; perhaps not. It features a mish-mash of naval knick-knacks, Victoriana and 1920s tiling. The menu is similarly diverse — fish pie, Moroccan tapas, ribeye steak, Greek Meze. It must be like the United Nations in the kitchen. Get me Kofi! Do you want that decaff?

This is a great little pub in the heart of the South Lanes and atop port of call for a pint or four! Rather than go for a chic refurbishment, they have opted to keep the place traditional including a proper open fire. The jewel in the crown of the gaff is the staff who are certainly contenders for the friendliest staff in the city. I haven’t eaten here, but friends have told me good things about the place, especially the Sunday roasts. A word of warning though. The place is somewhat limited on seating, so if you are out for an evening here, or some food, you may want to get ahead of the game and come early. I especially like the upstairs area around the back where there are a couple of lazy sofas and a lot of the original exposed brick work. Some people may find this scruffy, but it is just the character of the place coming out to me. If you are a lover of cider, ale or top end lagers you will not be disappointed by the selection on offer at the bar. I usually come here for a lunchtime, or afternoon swift one, so haven’t really sampled the full range of drinks available. A nice place to have a break from the bustle of the Lanes as long as you don’t suffer from claustrophobia!

A nice pub in the south laines where I’ve enjoyed many a good pint! An interesting layout and with additonal seating outside the victory offers a welcome break during a busy day shopping! Their roast dinners are reasonably priced and leave you satisfied, probably not the best in Brighton but nowhere near the worst. The young barstaff are always happy to chat whilst serving your drinks, a good all rounder!

Good old Victory is one of the Lanes nicer pubs, although it’s a bit difficult to find a place to sit and relax: it is a bit pokey. Still, when you get past that, it is a great place to enjoy a beverage, with a great selection and great prices, as well as a nice food selection. The ambiance is great(old man pub), and the staff are friendly: not much to fault here. My only real gripe here is the seating area: I like the feel and the ambiance of the pokey country pub, but the big tables don’t seat as many as you’d think, so more often than not there are plenty of people standing around like lost sheep. That and the sloppily tacked on smoking area leave much to be desired, but everything else is really great: there’s plenty of ales, ciders, wines and that kind of thing, all for a bit less than you’d think, and the staff are happy to advise if you’re unsure: really great service! It’s a bit difficult to commend the Victory more than 4 stars: I’d love to give it full marks, as it is a great place for a pint, but I do seem to spend most evenings there standing in the dingy smoking spot or standing around awkwardly inside, which does ruin my memories of this place. If only it was bigger…

This is one of my favourite pubs in town. Really REALLY friendly staff and it always seems to attract an interesting crowd. If you get there early enough on a Saturday and the weathers ok, do sit outside as its great for people watching. My wife loves the strong cider they serve in here and for me, they have a pretty good choice of beers. Food wise, we had a really nice Sunday roast there a while back that none of us could finish. The portions ar enormous! Great place for some good weekend pub antics.

Super nice and a lovely little courtyard for smokes. It’s a proper olde looking pub which I find a breath of fresh air inbetween all the sparkly new and colourful shops surrounding it. They do a tradtional pub grub menu of chips, sandwiches and soups and they do it very well. Nice hand-cut chips, fresh wedge shaped sandwiches and tasty soups. It’s basic, it has character and there’s lots of old wood which somehow adds to the flavour of a nice cold pint.

Built over a century ago to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar and named after one of Britain’s flagship fleets, HMS Victory, this pub is packed with character, with dark wooden interiors and beer-barrelled tables, fireplaces and naval memorabilia adorning the walls. It’s probably the pub that I’ve visited the most since living in Brighton, apart from the one on the end of my road, of course. Situated in the centre of town, The Victory is spread over two floors and is continuously jam-packed, both in the week and on the weekend. Playing host to DJs from 9 o’clock on weekends and serving scrumptious tuna steaks and big scary burgers in the day, the Victory is one of Brighton’s busiest pubs. It has its very own big friendly bouncer affectionately nicknamed Shrek. It’s got a covered outside area for smoking, but in the summer it’s difficult to bag a table outside the front of the pub, so perhaps not the best place for summer drinking.

Pubs lined with green tiles have never really registered visually with me, I notice them but never make the connection to it being a public house to visit. After coming round to the idea via a gin and tonic outside The Heart and Hand, The victory excursion came about very organically. They have a hugely luminous cider called Cheddar Cheese, which look almost radioactive but was still pretty beauty. And the food in The Victory is insane… huge portions and they even do Jerk Chicken with Caribbean Coleslaw, lovely.

I have been here lots of times. Lunchtimes are always quite busy with good traditional food on offer. In the evenings it is like any other town centre pub. Overall it is nice to see an oldy worldy pub surviving in the centre of Brighton

The exterior of the Victory is neat, shiny green tiles –which would originally, I believe, have been the colours of the brewery which built it(common to many Victorian pubs). Inside, the place cuts a good balance between traditional and modern. The bar itself is set to one side, separate from most of the seating, which can mean it becomes a bit of a bottleneck, but also that the seating areas themselves are apart from the hustle and bustle of people buying drinks. You can simply kick back on one of their homely, slightly worn leather sofas, and sit for hours having disucssions about the ships in bottles on the walls or the eclectic selection of books. If you can’t get a seat downstairs, upstairs provides more seating, although it is sometimes hired for functions. Being a a traditional town centre pub, the Victory lacks an outside area, although they do try their best with a few pavement tables — not a bad place to watch the passing crowds from on a sunny afternoon.

The Victory a proper little pub located in the South Lanes. The exterior is completed covered in green tiles, which means it stands out quite considerably from the surrounding shops. With a traditional interior and cosy wooden back room, this pub is the perfect place to escape the chaos of weekend shopping– that is provided the rest of the shopping crowd or a couple of hen-dos haven’t had the same idea! Due to the Victory’s central location and proximity to West St it can get extremely busy on weekend evenings and attracts a seriously diverse clientele. Sometimes the pub suffers under its popularity– unfortunately, I have witnessed some pretty loutish behaviour here on a Saturday night. Overall though, the Victory is a really nice place to stop for a pint and the staff have always been really friendly. A good friend of mine used to work there and we would regularly have lock-ins…good times!

Aaah The Victory… Just round the corner from the chaos of West Street and Churchill Square, this pub is the perfect haven on a wet winter’s day: when your umbrella is long inside-out-ed and maintaining a tidy hairdo long abandoned, pull up a chair and sip into a good pint — all that’s missing is the roaring fire. It’s a very pubby pub, the kind with older folk playing card games and a plethora of conversation starters adorning the walls — from old maps and paintings of boats to a framed cat-o’ 9 tails(a kind of whip apparently). The relevance of these items is unbeknown to me, but they create that ‘oh yes, i’m in a proper authentic pub’ aura. Alas it’s not cheap, but unless you’re in a Wetherspoons/Yates kinda mood, you’re unlikely to come across cheap in central Brighton. On my last visit, two meals and two pints of cider came to £21. I had Jamaican chicken and rice — it was ok, though the rice was a bit crispy from reheating and the chicken a bit scrawny. Mind you, the cider is good stuff — none of that Strongbow rubbish — and my friend’s beef burger and chips was very generously sized. This place is definitely a favourite of mine, and a good place to know about if you’re braving the city centre for your Christmas shopping some time soon.

This is a great little pub on the edge of the Lanes. Its exterior is covered in those old style green tiles that make it look like it hasn’t changed in 100 years. Inside they have attempted to keep it as traditional as possible, with dark woods, candles and rustic furniture. It can often get completely rammed due to its location, as its often the first watering hole visitors find when coming the famous Brighton lanes for a knees up. The clientele are varied and you get everyone from posh ladies what lunch to old man ale heads. They also have lots of regulars due to the friendly staff, ale on offer and gorgeous food. It can be quite dark inside but they also have on street tables outside for the summer months. They do an awesome Sunday roast but a little expensive at £8. They have open mic nights on Thursdays, and DJs at the weekend playing everything from mod classic to 80s pop. Altogether a nice boozer and great for a bite if you passing and can see a seat!

The outside of the Victory Inn is quite striking with green and cream tiles. It looks very much like a pub fishermen and sailors would go into and perhaps they did. Now it is usually filled with the classic Brighton mix of 1⁄3 students, 1⁄3 professionals and 1⁄3 randoms. The inside keeps to the sea pub feel with wooden floors and tables, wooden benches and red velvet and leather on stools and I think some chairs, candles in wine bottles– that sort of look. There are two cosy rooms downstairs with several small tables and a few larger ones for groups. The bar serves a good mix of lagers and ales as well as some decent wines– usually with a special deal offered like buy two glasses get the rest of the bottle free. I’ve been to a few parties in the room upstairs at the Victory and it’s a good size venue for a small to medium gathering with three rooms– one with sofas and two with tables– they’ll lay on a decent finger food buffet as well if you want it. There is also, if you hunt it out a nice little outdoor courtyard with a few tables combined with tables round the front for all the smokers or lovers of the night sky.
