Big Bites is a little local takeaway near my old house, which I once frequented on a semi-regular basis. It’s usefully located on the back route from the station to London Road, and is open ‘early’ until midnight, so for lazy dinner off the late train it’s excellent. There’s a bewildering variety of burgers including one with prawns and marie-rose sauce, and good pizza. They also have lots of baklava which became a deep-seated weakness of mine — that strange wild sweetness coupled with the not-quite-crunchiness is quite addictive after the initial acquired-taste stage. You’ll probably have to wait, but entertainment is laid on in the form of the local heavy teen gang who hang out in here most nights. They adopted me briefly as a sort of paternal-uncle figure, and are very friendly to the vast majority of people, so don’t be put off by their constant vaguely ominous presence — engage them in conversation about their latest non-fight and they’ll respond eagerly.(The teen non-fight, for the uninitiated, is the phenomenon in which they stalk about the streets with their fists raised looking for trouble, come across another gang doing the same and growl at them for a while during a mutual comparison of one another’s mothers. No violence ensues from either party. All rollicking good fun.) Prices are reasonable and staff friendly, so head over if you’re in this neck of the woods.

Big bites are indeed necessary when tucking into these bountiful burgers, kebabs, chicken wings and pizzas. Last time I went it was Gay Pride weekend and they’d cheekily increased their prices(given their location, this is good business strategy if you ask me), so my review might lack accuracy on prices, but suffice to say, even with an increase there was nothing out of the ordinary. Some may consider the service a little slow, but for me, to see they are actually cooking the food I am about to eat rather than simply re-heating, or committing the cardinal sin of micro waving it is more important than time. The food is pretty tasty too, which is a bonus. The location of Big Bites is a real bonus, especially if you live in the Seven Dials area, which is, in my opinion, severly underserved in the after-hours snacking department. Less fatty, better cooked and with a jovial bunch who work there, Big Bites will do just nicely thanks.
