Mick O’Connells Irish Pub

A large Irish pub tucked away in one of the small streets in between the Dom and Jansplein. The primary language here is English; some of the bar staff only speak English, and you’ll usually find a lot of foreign students here, mixed with locals.
There are a couple of big televisions that are usually tuned to English-​language sports channels. Beers on tap include Guiness and Murphys and some of the major Dutch brands.

3.5 stars actually. The ambience is great, signs everywhere that remind me of home. No, I’m not Irish, I’m British. ;)
I just love those dark brown pubs with a mix of different tables and chairs all made of dark brown wood and this pub is no exception. We were here fairly early (10 pm) and most seats were filled with friends and couples relaxing and having a beer. Funny enough, most people enjoyed their own favourite size of beer rather than taking advantage of the happy hour deal which is small Heinekens for 1 euro, everyday after 10 pm.
Though the place wasn’t packed, it was extremely loud and I had trouble hearing everything that was being said at our table. That was a bit annoying, but not O’Connells’ fault.
Plans for future visits:
*Pub quiz every Monday (reserve a table 030 – 2 368 466).
*Restaurant menu looks great though more American than Irish.
*Live sports shown on beautiful TV’s.

Gewoon een lekkere kroeg om een pilsje te doen met de mannen. Is redelijk groot en dus voldoende ruimte om lekker te staan of te zitten en een goede pils te pakken. Het eten is trouwens ook best goed. Als ik met wat mannen afspreek, is het eigenlijk standaard bij Mick.
Ook lekker gemeleerd publiek, ook nog eens internationaal en personeel is over het algemeen ook gewoon vriendelijk.

I agree with Mofish, it’s a very nice place, and quite spacious! Since smoking was banned from the Dutch cafés, they opened a smoking room with pooltables in it! (Not that I’m a smoker; but it seems a nice room to me) They have a good selection of drinks and the staff is friendly.

Very nice friendly Irish pub and definately the best place in Utrecht for watching football. rugby/​cricket. They have a number of screens and are great at organising which one shows which event when there are clashes. The food is quite nice too.
