A real authentic Dutch pub. Contrary to other pubs in Netherlands, it is easy to strike up a conversation with total strangers. Sitting in the pub, I felt like I was part of a Rembrandt painting. Everything seemed of the age of my great-great grandfather. Drinks were ok. Have not tried the food.

Named after a Douglas DC-2 plane which was part of KLM’s fleet in the 1930’s, The Uiver has been around for a long time and has managed to keep it pretty high ranking in the annual ‘best 100 bars in the Netherlands’ list. Staff is nice and very welcoming. It came under new management about two years ago, which has brought some change, and mostly for the better. It’s less cluttered with dusty KLM paraphernalia than it used to be and seems to attract more of a mixed crowd than before. The beer selection on tap is varied, with a mix of mostly Dutch, German and Belgian beers. It also changes often and I’ve found myself surprised at some of the beers they’ve had over time. Apart from beer, they have a good selection of Dutch and Belgian spirits(Jenever). The snack menu isn’t half bad either: a mixed plate of Dutch cheeses and sausage, served with mustard is a great accompaniment to a couple a drinks. It’s a very traditional Dutch bar and definitely one to visit when you’re going for a drink in Haarlem.

Nice place to go and try some beers. They have about 10 on tap and many more in bottles. Sometimes there is live music as well.

I do love this tiny little proeflokaal in Haarlem. It’s located right in Centrum, is friendly and cozy, doesn’t attract the loud crowds that end up a few doors down at the other bars on an average night, and it has all the character you could want in a small Dutch establishment. They actually have a really decent list of beers and more, and live jazz on scheduled nights. A great Dutch experience!
