The atmosphere in this restaurant is really cool with a feeling of being in Japan for Cherry Blossom festival. You get a significant amount of food albeit expensive. The quality of this food is ok. But you can tell they are let down by the amount they have to produce.

Sumo is a Japanese restaurant with an «all you can eat» system: you get a list with all dishes from which you can pick. For each round, each person can order 5 dishes, and vous get 5 rounds — so technically it’s not all you can eat, but considering that you rarely get past the third round, it’s more than ok! The price varies according to the day and time but it’s about 28 euros on a weekend night. The food is good. Not amazingly good, and anywhere else, it would probably have been three stars, but for Amsterdam standards Sumo is above the other places I tried for this range of price. The choice of dishes is quite amazing: many nigiri, sushi rolls, sashimi(you have to pay extra for these), temaki, but also warm dishes such as gyoza, vegetables, skewers, etc, etc! They recently relocated this restaurant to the former spot where buddha bar was, which is great: the space is way nicer than the older spot! much more open space, nice interior modern lounge design. It’s bigger as well so it’s become easier to get a table — also, they won’t kick you out as easily as before after your two regulatory hours(we actually stayed almost four hours last time!).

This was another of our unfortunate second choice dining options because the first one was unreportedly closed. And they were open late and for some culture shock reason, restaurants close fairly early in AMS. What a terrible Japanese chain restaurant… honestly their menu has a entire plethora of choice but nothing actually tasted worthy enough to stomach. It’s great for groups and just everyday sushi but still we’d never have gone here if we were able to turn back time. Okay, we ordered a crap load of crap really… shrimp & crab balls(deep fried foulness… Maccas could do a better job with this), tempura sweet potato(unnecessary plate of calories), lots of nigiri(salmon, tuna, prawn, herring, dorado and red snapper), fruit salad in coconut syrup and potato scallops. It’s advertised as all you can eat but when we turned up there was much sold out already aka lots of nigiri and sashimi dishes. Perhaps a hoard of body builders came through here post intense gym session. The nigiri tasted a couple days old and all the deep fried crap probably would’ve tasted better if they served us a plate of just deep fried juice. Ugh avoid especially the balls and this entire establishment in general. Never again.

This restaurant is the perfect place for Japanese cuisine lovers. For EUR28, you can order as many dishes as you like. You have a large menu where you can check the dishes you interested in. The food is excellent and the service perfect. The price is more than reasonable as you often need to pay the same price or even more in Japanese restaurant for a traditional menu. However, I would have appreciated other Japanese specialities such as Nikka/Hibiki whiskies, teas, etc.

Unbedingt vorbestellen.
