The abbreviated menu here is filled with sate’: chicken, pork, goat, vegetarian, and prawn. Each comes with a good helping of white rice, a small Asian salad, and something I thought of as a cross between a papadam and a potato chip – light and yummy. The meal is preceded with a cup of delicate lemongrass and ginger soup. We ordered the chicken and pork and found them both to be sate’-sfying. A small bowl of additional sauce comes with each platter, but beware – the spice kicks it all up a couple of notches, heat-wise. The special drink and dessert menu are also short – three items each, though there is a full bar, so you could order any drink you could think of.(I found my special drink tasty, but a weak pour on the vodka.) In fact, the small ground level establishment is more bar than restaurant(hence it’s name I guess), with what appeared to be a lively regular crowd. Located close to the Amsterdam Museum, so a good place to re-charge after visiting there.

Went on a rainy August early in the evening — around 730. There were plenty of tables and lots of room at the bar. The other reviews describe the look perfectly; it’s a dark bar, but some how sleek & cool as well. The staff is very friendly & attentive. That can be hard to find in Amsterdam. They mix a variety of nifty drinks — I had delicious prosecco, but others in my party raved about their mixed drinks. They have great wines and beer as well. The food was outstanding! The owner takes great pride in what he serves, he is incredibly enthusiastic about his menu and will gladly explain what any dish is and give you as much background about the dish as you are interested in hearing. I didn’t think I would be able to even try the dessert after my incredible dinner. I was convinced to try the«spekkoek ijs», so glad I did! After my first drink was finished the place was filling up nicely and by the time the food arrived almost every table was occupied. Everyone was clearly very happy with their drinks, food & service, because the whole place had a vibe of people truly enjoying their evening.

Being in the center of town on the Rokin is a plus. I tend to favor dark bars and this one was certainly that. It’s a full bar with cocktails, beer and wine. There are two bartenders to make and serve your drink selection. The restaurant is located in kind of a basement. Since it was located in the basement I expected it to be cooler temperature wise but it was still somewhat warm. I like long bars especially to sit at and to lean on. I didn’t see a menu so I couldn’t say what kind of fare they offer. There’s a row of tables outside which is nice. I ordered a gin and tonic. You can order a gin and tonic all over the world and it’s pretty much the same. It’s nothing special in my experience and it lived up to that as I saw the bartender prepare it. In Amsterdam the prices are high and this was no exception though I was curious as to how and why it cost so much. It very well could have been a normal price. I’ll have to go back and find out.

Societe Wunderbar, send my colleague there after reading a good review in one of those amazing magazines I happen to read. Entering this bar/restaurant/club/lounge/societe is quite a struggle as you have to knock out the big, thick brown curtain dividing the warm and cosy club from the cold and breezy November weather. Wunderbar has a wonderful bar, with brown leather accents, and they pour a great bubbly wine which goes pretty amazing with the interesting bar platter. Order two if you dare, the food that comes after(they have a small a la carte menu) most probably won’t blow your mind. Still, a very neat place to go, impress on a first date or just hang at the bar and flirt a little with the friendly(wunder)bar personnel.

This new restaurant/bar opened only 3 days ago at the Enge Kapelsteeg between Kalverstraat and Rokin. It is located in the middle of the city center so it is easy to get there and just a great location in general. When you peek into the Enge Kapelsteeg, you will see a the little tables standing outside. There are actually many spots! How nice, a terrace even though you’re in the middle of Amsterdam. I went to Société Wunderbar for drinks last night and the place looked great. It is in a basement but there are still a lot of windows for enough light. The place is very cosy with the wooden tables, the candles en the long bar. There is an amazing piece of art at the wall, made of tape. It’s looks very cool and it must have been so much work for the amazing artist! The staff at the place is super friendly. I loved that we got salted almonds with our drinks. A small but friendly gesture. I could tell they were very proud of their place and I understand this very well. It looked great, the drinks were nice and I loved my wine. They told us their chef worked at Restaurant As and Café Modern before he came to work here and they also showed the menu. It looked great! Dishes like ‘Bacalao Croquettes with aioli and fried sage’, ‘Tortilla pulled pork with pickled cucumber and edamame’, ‘Hanger steak with roasted shallots, sweet potato chips and chimichurri’, ‘Zuchinni fries’ and ‘Chilled rhubarb soup with curds and red fruit’. Sounds delicious and interesting right? I’m looking forward to having dinner at this place! For now I’ll give four stars because this place was so cool and had such a nice atmosphere, both in how the place looked and how friendly the staff was!
