I’ve never had the food here, but we come back every time we come to Amsterdam for the tomato juice. It is absolutely incredible. It’s a must order if you decide to come here. Enjoy! The beer is good too.

Hi there, art aficionados, who are about to wander into the Stedelijk Museum’s café-restaurant for a drink or some food! After a couple of visits by now, I think it is time for a quick review of this place. Overall, I think it is a good option in the Museum district area. I have eaten here several times, and had multiple ‘borrels’ here as well. Though not necessarily cheap, I think the wine selection is very decent. It is in a tourist area, in the end, so higher prices are not a surprise, I would argue. I have had oysters here, and they were not butchered as I have unfortunately seen in many places, so that is a plus. Finally, I really like that in the summer(or when it is sunny) you can sit outside and do some serious people watching. People watching is also an option in colder times, if you get a window table. My last visit there though, not so much. After being ignored for a while(even though the place was really not full) by 2 waitresses who might have been trying to get our order, but seemed generally confused, we managed to order some bitterballen, beer and macaroons. Quite a random order, but it was a post-museum /pre-dinner ‘borrel hapje’ moment. After a while our order arrives. As I start pouring my IPA beer in, I notice rests of lipstick or lip balm on the rim of my glass. NOT mine! So I asked the waitress to change it. First of all, she did not even apologize. Secondly, after getting a clean glass from the bar, she first carried it to a different table, only to realize they had not even ordered beer. I mean, it was only a bit I had poured in, but when you charge 4.80 for a beer, at least make sure I have a clean glass for it. Overall, I still feel it is a OK place to have wine and bitterballen or other snacks here, but let’s get one thing straight — Dirty glasses are really really NOT acceptable.

Loved the Thai soup when I came here for the first time. A week later, I visited again and the soup looked, tasted, and felt completely differently. I was disappointed. Maybe they had a different cook on Sunday? Nice strong coffee. I like the way they bring coffee which reminds me of old style Europe street cafes. Nice staffs over all. Service can be slow but I did not mind. Their croissant was disappointing. Maybe it’s because I am visiting from Paris??? Mom had a carrot cake and it was deadly sweet-not a healthy sweet. Won’t have that again. Seafood salad looked nice but I suffered enormous headache that night. I am sensitive to food additives especially preservatives. I do not know if they had preservatives or not but as the fish salad(and the Thai soup) being my last meal that day, I suspect that there was something in it that my body strongly reacted. Overall, I will come again for coffee. I like the ambiance, nice staffs, and their coffee.

This is in a cool location as it part of the Stedelijk which is an art, modern art and design museum that looks like a Giant’s bathtub next to the Museumplein park near the Rijksmuseum. The seating is 60s style modern outside and there is plenty of it and its a cool look. The inside is also nicely down. [5 stars] We both were very hungry and in a bit of a rush so we ordered steak. I got the special white sangria which was HUGE but unfortunately, was not good. [1 star] The steak however was almost excellent with a lovely béarnaise sauce and crisp and yummy vegetables. The waitress seemed confused that we wanted rare steak and this was low level medium rare but very nice and I would have it again; it was good. [5 stars] I had to try quite hard to get the watress’ attention because there was three of them with large sections and because we were in a hurry, I made sure I was gonna be served. When I did get their attention, they were good. [3 stars] There were people sitting near us(facing the road) that didn’t seem to be served at all and left because of it. [not rating but noting] It’s so close to us that I’m sure we will be back, probably for the steak :)

Was here on a nice sunny day for lunch. Positives: nice location, fair collection of wines, good sunny terrace. Negatives: bad service, poor quality of food, pricey for the quantity. Never had such a watery coffee in Holland before. Oh BTW, when I checked in Unilocal!Showed me an offer 1 coffee bij een desert, and ask me to show this to the owner or waitress! And so I did!!! They have no idea about this offer nor did they honor it. Shame on …

Got the rip eye and Rissoto. The rip eye I asked for medium rare was more like medium-well. We also got the tiramisu dessert. The food was good. In general the service is also good. However, we got charge for two small waters, instead of getting a larger one(water price not on the menu).

Maybe it’s me. Maybe cava should be served in a glass that smells like it’s been covered in a thick layer of dust only to be excavated when served to me. Maybe I should feel special. Maybe it’s normal to charge € 7 for a glass of cava that’s hardly been touched. Maybe it’s normal to not offer something else and/or apologise for any inconvenience, instead shrug your shoulders. And then maybe, just maybe this place doesn’t even deserve one star.

Definitely too expensive to have breakfast, portions are small and I didn’t like the croissant. Service is ok, but it’s a touristic restaurant.

2.5 stars, and only because the Dutch are so damned nice. We had a late lunch after visiting the(superb) museum. We sat outside and were duly ignored for about 10 minutes. Then a smiling waiter appeared to take our order, apparently undeterred by the fact we had not been given menus. When we finally ordered, however, the food came quickly and the order was accurate. Took a while to get the check, though. As usual in Amsterdam, even the bad service is remarkably friendly, so it was impossible to get mad. My wife had a grilled chicken caesar, which she thought was OK. Decent sized portion and the dressing came from the kitchen not a bottle. My older son had Thai coconut soup, which he found very disappointing, especially in a city with good Asian food. The twins and I each had brootjes, open faced sandwiches. One was buffalo mozzarella and pesto, another chicken and avocado, and the third smoked salmon. All were generous and very good, especially the smoked salmon(can’t go wrong with smoked fish in Northern Europe). It was great to sit outside in the fresh air and sunshine. The«museum quality» Dutch service, not so much. And while nothing in or near the museums is likely to be inexpensive, this was a pretty pricey lunch(about EUR60 for five). If you decide to go, bring money, patience and a desire for a good Dutch sandwich. For us, I think next time we will either stick with street food(plentiful on the Museumplein) or head down to one of the cafes on van Baerlestraat.

I found the staff apathetic. The menu for brunch was limited-only bread-based which I don’t eat. Decided to not eat much and instead wait for lunch.

On the first real sunny Saturday this year I am enjoying a nice rosé wine and oisters in the sun at restaurant stedelijk. The wine is excellent as the waiter already told(he liked this one better then the French one and we followed his advice). They had a nice oister deal of 12 for 18 euro’s, but when we counted them, there where only 11! The waiter reacted very nicely and brought us a bowl with two extra oisters. What a treat!

I had the«large» Asian salad, definitely not worth it. Quality did not match price. It was a small plate of watery iceberg lettuce and partly over-cooked duck. sesame dressing was good. No compliments on the service.

At Stedelijk I found extremes. The interiour design is extremely cool and posh, and they play lounge music what I’ve only experienced once in a restaurant so far — I like! Outside there’s a huge terrace and I imagine sitting there in the sun the whole day. 5 stars for that. As a main course we ordered the vangst van de dag, a seabass, which was extremely delicious. Equally the sides. And the whole plate was nicely arranged, I gladly give 5 stars for that. But then, the first disappointment: the crème brulée had a crust that’s really dilettante, the sugar was only half melted. But what was way more irritating were the clots in the crème. And it was too thick and milky. The taste was good but overall I’d only give 2 stars for this dessert — and not order it again. When you checkin at Stedelijk, you get a Unilocal coupon for a free coffee with your dessert. So I asked for it before we ordered. Our waitress had to ask her boss and also he claimed that he’d never heard of that, extremely awkward. But he reacted nicely and said I’d get the coffee for free. When the desserts were served I had to ask again for it and it didn’t surprise me that it was on the invoice in the end. 1 star for that. During the whole evening a promo girl and guy were walking around giving away small samples of coffee with either Amaretto, Disaronno or Tia Maria. And then they ask for a photo in exchange. WTF? I would have expected such a promotion in any other pub but not in a place like Stedelijk, extremely strange. And some words about the service… You notice that the staff are all professionals. Quite attentive and competent. But the waitress who served us doesn’t deserve more than 2 stars. She didn’t make us feel welcome and was extremely stiff and shortspoken, only providing work-by-rules. That’s sad because horeca is about people and if you act like that you miss out the chance to have fun with the guests and make them want to come back.

We ordered the breakfast formula: orange juice, tea or coffee, 1 croissant with jam & butter, 1 little cup with muesli and yoghurt, 1 little salty ‘croque-monsieur’ which was very cute. Everything was good but it was not fresh orange juice. Service was fairly fast for Amsterdam.

The Stedelijk is one of my fave museums in the city so when headed there I always bypass the restaurant and just get my art on… definitely will not be making that mistake anymore. The terrace is AWESOME. Sunbathers rejoice. Sip your wine. Enjoy the people watching. Make sure you put on some sunscreen. If you prefer to be in the shade, there is a large seating area indoors. For a museum restaurant, dining here won’t blow your budget. I think the apps are a bit overpriced but the main dishes are a good value.(Will definitely be trying out the steak the next time I’m there since I spent a good 10 minutes ogling the steak of the diner across the way from me!) Their wines by the glass are also available by the bottle, ranging from 20E to 24E. The service is attentive to boot.
