I just love it when a restaurant succeeds in every possible way. It creates an evening when both the diners and the restaurant staff can feel the synergy. We have had Indian food all over the US, but the food at Purna was the best we have ever had. There were even a couple of old family recipes from India in evidence. The restaurant is 30 years old and in the second generation, so that tells you how good it is.

Lets start with the atmosphere. It’s fantastic! It was nice and clean, smelled very pleasant and the place is small enough to be cozy but large enough to not feel crammed. The food was really well done. What i really enjoyed was the fact that it was all cooked upon ordering. I typically keep in mind that ALL food is going to taste somewhat different wherever you go. After All, thats the point of finding new places. This find was truly a diamond in the rough in an area that is saturated with restaurants. There are plenty of bad ones and this one shines. The service was excellent. Just remember its a family owned place, and you are in EU. Everything is a little more laid back. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The food is decent, but the staff leaves something to be desired. The waitress seemed more interested in her phone than in her guests.

My daughter and I can’t speak highly enough of the fabulous meal we had last night, delicious. We have to say it ranks up there as one of our best Indian food tastings. Run by a family for over 27years, the adult children serve up their mothers amazing cuisine. Great area too of Amsterdam, we sat outside.

This is the best Indian food we have ever had! Clean cute restaurant, family owned and operated, they are so kind! Spiced to perfection!

Had a very good meal here tonight. The previous reviewer is absolutely right about the heavy use of ghee, but I did not mind it so much, perhaps because I was sticking with the veg menu. The samosas were crispy and spicy with a nice yogurt sauce. The dal tarka was a little thinner than I am used to, but very tasty. And I really liked the saag paneer – sometimes you get this dish and it’s just a brown/green mass – you can hardly tell it is spinach. But this version tasted really fresh and lovely and looked very fresh as well. A decent chard was reasonable priced by the half liter to wash it all down. I love to stay at the Hotel Pulitzer around the corner, and I would definitely come back to Purna for one or more meals next time I am back.

If you like ghee, you’ll love Purna! This is the favorite of one of my colleagues so I decided to give it a try. The food is good but it has a little richer than I typically like. Overall it was a good meal but just not quite my taste. The soups are really good as is the naan. I heard that Mr. Purna passed away recently so stop by to support the Purna women with some really good Indian food along the way!
