Before heading to Amsterdam, a Unilocal friend living in the city had given me some advice.(Thank you, Dennis M!) His advice, handy as it was, was to avoid the tourist trap of the Argentinian Steak House. Dominating the popular tourist areas, Amsterdam has these kinds of places in abundance and in all honesty, they all look the same and all seem to be offering the same thing. So, it’s with irony that we ended up here on our first night in Amsterdam. If you’re a little like me, when you’re really very hungry, all real reasoning is cast aside. All rational thoughts are replaced with one notion. — Where can I get food and where can I get it now? It’s like all the foodie choices you’d usually make are pushed aside and your stomach takes over and it just won’t take no for an answer. ‘FEEDME!’ You can seriously hold me unaccountable for any decisions I make when I’m famished! Our stomachs’ decision to eat here was definitely poorly made. Poor show, tummy, poor show. So we’d literally just hopped off a plane and wound up in Amsterdam city. The nearest decent looking place happened to be Pacifico. It seemed pleasant with quaint surroundings including rustic wall prints but it all just clashed with the dance music in the background. Service was friendly and food was fast. I ordered nachos and they did the job, they really did. I’ll be honest, I think that had more to do with the sheer level of my hunger than anything else! The 3.75 euro charge for all small soft drinks, including water, was definitely the lowest point and I just don’t think Pacifico could redeem itself after that. Of course we hadn’t found the one great Argentinian Steakhouse in a popular tourist area of Amsterdam. Of course not! So, whilst Pacifico did the job for our quick first meal, I really can’t imagine that it’d be great for anything other than that. Amsterdam is a wonderful city and the restaurants are testament to that. — There is far, far better just around the corner waiting to be found. We left keen to see what more Amsterdam had to offer. Not to self: In future, make such issues matters of the mind and be wary of the Argentinian Steakhouses in Amsterdam!

Worst service ever: expired drinks, waiter claimed best before date was date of production. We got different food than ordered, some side dishes were not served at all, but were on the final bill. When we refused to pay them, the waiter started lengthy discussions

My first meal in Amsterdam was here, in Pacifico. The restaurant is located in busy tourist area. Yet I was surprised to see only a few tables were occupied. Well, better for me! The waiter was always on time. I ordered a vegetarian dish called Rollo(veggies, flour tortilla with a lot of melted cheese on it). In about ten minutes or so I had it on my table. The food was very tasty. I was hungry like a wolf, so there was nothing left on the plate. The entire interior of the restaurant is festive and colorful and has been designed with well planned set of wood tables which are decorated with candles. Walls have some interesting paintings. I had a feeling I’m in Mexico. Planning on coming back!

I actually found this place in Amsterdam because I was craving Pacifico Clara beer. The prices were a little high but I think that is due to the area it’s located in. Split an order of the super nacho, or nachos Mucho, can’t remember what they were called. They were really good. Nice mix of all the ingredients and they toasted the whole dish which made the chips really crisp. Then we split one of the big plates which included the cheese enchilada beef taco and some chili Colorado. Also sides Of rice black beans guacamole and sour cream. This dish was good as well. We definitely went away full and satisfied that I got my Mexican beer. It was just average though and also hard to find Mexican food in Amsterdam.

Walking around Amsterdam, you will see a large number of Argentinean steak houses. Being a meat eater, these caught my eye and i really wanted try one. Since my husband and I were interested in checking out the Red Light District after dinner, I found a highly rated steak house nearby called Tango. But, arriving at the address of Tango, it was closed. Since Argentinean steak houses are a dime a dozen, we walked a little further and found Pacifico. We were seated promptly. We were both pretty thirsty, so we asked for some water. Looking at the menu further, I noticed that they charge for water! And it ain’t cheap — 3 euros for a bottle. At current trading rates, that’s around $ 3.80. This is actually very common in Amsterdam. Still water isn’t tap water, it’s bottled water. I haven’t tried asking for tap water yet, but I’m guessing it’s possible and should hopefully be free. For my main course, I ordered the rump with a side of corn on the cob, plus the chimichurri sauce. My husband also ordered the rump with a baked potato on the side. We probably waited 40 minutes for the food(although, this also seems to be a common theme at Amsterdam restaurants — much longer waits than the US, which can be relaxing, but surprising if not expected). When the waiter brought the food out, he gave us the steaks with fries. I suggested this wasn’t correct; I had ordered corn on the side, not fries. He took the fries back, and came out with the corn several minutes later. No mention of the potato at this point, so my husband reminded him of the order. My husband’s medium steak was pretty thinly cut and looked really dry. My medium rare steak was a nice thickness and well cooked. The chimichurri sauce was amazing and really made the meal excellent. The corn on the cob was disappointing — half an ear for 2.50 euros… After we finished the steaks, the baked potato still hadn’t been delivered, so my husband asked the waiter again about it. He said it hadn’t even been started, and we said just don’t bring it. My husband was already full. At this point, the waiter did apologize for the delays and incorrect orders, saying it was an unusually busy and they were understaffed. Overall, the prices are pretty high, and the service was unfortunately not very great. But, you might have a better experience if you go on a less busy night and are smarter about the food selection.
