It doesn’t take a non-Dutch-speaking genius to figure out the meaning of Moeders. All you have to do is walk inside: instead of wallpaper, there are what must be a thousand framed pictures of – mothers! In this cozy, tea room-like ambiance, the rule of the day is Dutch home-style cooking, and it was very good. We ordered a carafe of wine, then tried to decipher the menu. It wasn’t a language problem, but one of perplexity. Despite the crowded room, our server was unflappable and patient as she explained the setup. We had a choice of three different fixed-price dinners, but there were also à la carte choices. So after we ordered a carafe of wine, we settled on one full meat hotchpotch dinner, one à la carte vegetarian platter, and a Dutch pea soup, all to share. For the meat dinner we chose spinach as the vegetable, which seemed to be combined with mashed potatoes. This was surrounded by a meatball, sausage, and bacon. We were able to substitute an additional meatball for the sausage. The vegetarian plate also had potatoes and cheese, with a delicious croquette instead of meat. The Dutch pea soup was a thick purée enhanced with diced sausage, very tasty, and served in an enameled covered crock. The one dessert that came with the full dinner was more than enough for two — a plate with two small cups of pudding/mousse, plus a center scoop of ice cream. A filling and satisfying meal in a lovely atmosphere, with excellent service, made this a memorable experience.

Regarding Gluten-Free… 1) Menu with very clearly marked items denoting gluten-free 2) Many options 3) The BEST gluten-free bread I’ve ever had after eating GF for 10+ years! That’s not hyperboyle. The GF bread is f’ing legit! The food was very good and the meal lasted for quite a while. Plan on making an event out of this

Definitely very traditional Dutch, and a great option for travellers who don’t have a Dutch family to cook all this food for them. I will say that you should DEFINITELY make a reservation, as they are usually very crowded, and it’s a very small(seriously, it’s tiny) place with not much room. I came here with my boyfriend and his family as a «safe» place to eat, since some of his family members are picky eaters, and they are Dutch. I wouldn’t bring other Dutch people here, but if you miss traditional Dutch cooking, this is definitely the place. Their«hotchpotch» is stamppot, and it does change daily(as much as mashed potatoes and vegetables CAN change,) and for a traditional Dutch place– they are actually vegetarian friendly. You can order a la carte here, or have a set menu(starter + entrée/main course + dessert) from three different tiers of entrees/main courses. We ordered the«Dutch Rice Table»(rijsttafel for those of you in the know, which is a Dutch-Indonesian thing) which meant we got all of the restaurant’s Dutch specialties served family style. This included the hashed meat, the suddervlees, the stamppot, and a whole bunch of traditional Dutch sides. We enjoyed our meal thoroughly as we were given stamppot with sauerkraut and sausages, more mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, boiled pears, applesauce and red cabbage as sides, while sharing two meat entrees as well. My favourite was the hashed meat, which is basically meat stew– but I found it to be much tastier than the suddervlees(also really good.) My recommendation is to get this with your friends and family. and pour the hashed meat with sauce over your stamppot– you’ll thank me. My dessert was excellent. I got the Dutch Delight, which is poffertjes with flan and a speculoos ice cream. It was just the right amount of dessert after that huge, gigantic meal.(Seriously, four of us shared the family style rice table and couldn’t finish all of it.) I’d definitely recommend coming here if you’re visiting, or if you’re just in the mood for eating Dutch.

Ordered the hotchpotch and was not disappointed. Was trying to find authentic Dutch food for our last night in Amsterdam. We went to this establishment and was very pleased with the service and the food. Only hint would be to definitely call in advance to setup a reservation. We went on a Friday night without having a reservation and ended up eating outdoors. They did turn on the heaters, so it worked out well. Ended the meal with apple pie and ice cream. Highly recommend trying that as well.

We ordered the combos and were over the moon pleased with each and every dish. This is what we got: — Egg in the Meadow — Miss Pumpkin — Hotchpotch with spinach or sauerkraut — Suddervlees — Traditional Danish desserts — Chocolate Party dessert All of these were amazing… But I would recommend the sauerkraut instead of the spinach in the hotchpotch dish. Literally mind blown by the kind service and wonderful meal. Would come here everyday if I could. I recommend sitting on the patio during sunset.

Moeders is a tiny, traditional Dutch restaurant. The tables are cramped together, not for romantic setting. However, we went for the food, so no issues for us. Service is good, waitress explained the menu and food came out relatively quick. The name means Mothers, so it has pictures of women all over it. Very convenient to get to get to, just across the street from the tram stop, two stops from the Dam Square. We ordered the mama’s happas for starter. It is a variety dish with 5 kinds of Dutch appetizers. The beef stew and spare ribs for main course. Both were cooked perfectly, meat very tender, and excellent flavor. They were not salty at all, which was key for us. Not expensive at all with good portion. You can order a la carte or set 3 course of starter, main entrée, and dessert for under 30 euro. Drinks are separate. As with most Dutch places, no tap water so need to orders drinks. We went on Saturday night and they don’t accept walk ins, reservation only. They were fully booked. Have to try this place if you are looking for tradition Dutch food in Amsterdam. Make sure to make reservations, don’t risk getting turned away.

This place is such a gem. The concept behind a mother’s kitchen is just beautiful. The minute you walk in and see the walls covered with photos of mothers — you feel like you’re at home. The service was spectacular– all of the staff was incredibly kind and was accommodating to our English. The group of 3 of us did our ordering family style, and shared a variety of dishes on the menu. Everything was incredible. And the Dutch Apple Pie for dessert is not to miss!!!

An absolute must every time I am in Amsterdam. Reservations are necessary as it’s always busy. I’ve been a dozen times and tried everything on the menu. I haven’t had a bad meal or service.

I was so happy for some authentic Dutch food and to visit such an adorable establishment. Moeders means Mothers in English and frames photos of mothers can be found on every inch of the wall. I felt as if I walked straight into Grandma’s house with her porcelain china delicately displayed. They have the menu in Dutch and English and our waitress luckily I was with my Dutch friends who were able to converse with our waitress who did actually speak a bit of English. We joked and asked if there were in fact Mother’s cooking up a storm in the kitchen but ironically they said all the cooks were men! They offer different 3 course options or you can order individual entrees. Trust me, you’ll want to order the 3 course option because you can’t find Dutch food in Amsterdam very easily. We started with Mama’s Happas which is a variation of 5 small appetizers. It included a well seasoned duck leg, smoked salmon on a piece of toast, a grilled oyster, something that resembled spanakopita, and a brie cheese toast thing. All very delicious. For my entrée I ordered the Hotchpotch which is a Dutch«stamppot» of mashed potatoes(mixed with either spinach or sauerkraut — I got sauerkraut) served with a sausage, a meatball & a thick bacon. And a side of gravy/meat drippings that you pour over the mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes mixed with the sauerkraut was the perfect balance of sour that paired well with the saltiness of the gravy and meat. Meat and potatoes, can’t get any better than that. A very hardy comfort food. But surprisingly the Dutch are pretty slim, haha. For dessert I got the Dutch Delight which is a combination of three old Dutch desserts: mini-curd, small pancakes & «speculaas»(spiced biscuit) ice-cream. The mini-curd came in a whipped vanilla like moose with chocolate and the other was lighter and fruitier ice cream. The speculaas were cute little pancake like rounds topped with honey and powdered sugar. Absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed everything about Moeders and highly recommend it.

This place was recommended to us by a local as we were looking for somewhere to go for some traditional Dutch food. We had made a reservation and were seated right away when we arrived. We asked the waitresses for some recommendations and ordered two appetizers and a main meal for two which included two beef stews, lots of potatoes, sauerkraut, apple sauce and radish. This was probably a bit much for us(and also quite pricey), we probably could’ve gone without the appetizers as it left us so full even before our main meal had come out. Nevertheless, it was an interesting experience and we enjoyed the food as well as the friendly service!

If you’re looking for authentic Dutch food, look no further. My roommate and I were wandering around Amsterdam looking for some lunch, and while we were pondering this place, a man had passed by and said we had definitely come to the right place. The thing about this place is that it’s really popular and quite small. We were really lucky to get our seat! Right after us, four groups of 2 people were turned away because they were out of room or the tables open were needed for a later reservation. So if you’re planning ahead, make a reservation! The food was really tasty and filling! My roommate and I had shared The Dutch Riceplate, which was a sampler of sorts, and both of us were extremely full afterwards. The food was so tasty! In English, moeders means mothers, and this really showed in the décor of this restaurant. This restaurant celebrates mothers, and they had pictures of mothers lining every inch of their walls.

We wanted to «eat Dutch», we ate Dutch… And that was great! First, you enter … and you see/admire the decoration of the restaurant: pictures of mothers everywhere. That’s super kitch but it makes you smile and I must admit, it made me feel comfortable Dishes were simple but really good. What’s funny is that the sausage of the Hotchpotch comes from the store Hema The service is pleasant too So, good(Dutch) food and nice service and kitch/funny decoration … if you go to Amsterdam you should totally come by Moeders!!!

I’ve been to Amsterdam a few times for business. The first time we rented an apartment above Moeders and walked in, jet lagged, looking for a table. They took pity on us and let us eat though we were told we had to be out by a certain time. They take reservations, but can be difficult to get on the phone to place them. This was an issue another trip, but we managed to get in a few days later by walking in to place them. The place is tiny, so its understandably hard to get in last minute. Despite the trouble making reservations, the food overcomes it completely. It is exactly what you want if you’re looking for a nourishing Dutch meal to overcome some of the rain and cold. The perfect meat & potatoes place, just like mother would make.

Great service, fun environment(super relaxed, ultra casual, vaguely hipstser-ish), and very good food — but a LOT of it. We enjoyed our experience as part of our Amsterdam trip, and the staff was incredibly accommodating(we got lost and were 45 minutes late!). Reservations are a must. Only real note of caution: If you get the Dutch Ricedish, be aware that the«typical Dutch meal,» as the menu calls it, means meat and potatoes, meat and potatoes, meat and potatoes and more meat and potatoes. We couldn’t possibly eat that much meat and potatoes! But we had a good time trying.

The Hachée was so delicious, I ordered it again the second time I went here. The spare ribs come in a good-sized portion and have a sweet sauce that reminds me of American barbecue. The eclectic décor and casual service put me at ease. It does feel a bit crowded, though. This is where I take visiting friends who want to taste Dutch homestyle cooking.

Everyone recommends Morders for«traditional non-pancake dutch food». sadly, i don’t know what traditional dutch food is but Moeders menu does offer things that appear to be authentic and/or delicious. Tried the hotchpotch with sauerkraut for 15 euros. It is definitely a filling and heavy meal. Mostly mashed potatoes with kraut mixed in as well as some meat to accompany it. Tried a bit of the veggie hotchpotch and it was fairly good as well. «service» was a bit lacking.

Moeders has a fun vibe(see the many photos posted to Unilocal of their walls covered in framed pictures), great beer selection, decent service and excellent food. Plus, when in Amsterdam we wanted to at least try some traditional Dutch food. Dutch food, it seems, is similar to German or even Irish with lots of meats and sausages and potatoes. The portions at Moeders were large(which we gathered from eyeing our neighbors at dinner) and therefore we skipped appetizers and went straight for entrees. I am a lover of all things fermented so I could not pass up the sauerkraut stampot. This was a hearty portion of sauerkraut mixed with mashed potatoes, topped with gravy and served with a sausage, a meatball and bacon. It was fantastic and the potato was loaded with sauerkraut — so if you are really looking for your average mashed potato, this will be disappointing. But, if you freakishly love sour cabbage, like me, you will be thrilled. The other entrée we tried was also excellent and was a meat stew served in an adorable red pot with potatoes and red cabbage. The meat was perfectly tender and the stew broth was excellent and full of flavor. Save the bread they bring to the table to dip in this stew! On the side, the apple compote was a nice addition to the entrees. For dessert, do not miss the apple pie. This is actually more of a moist, delicious slice of buttery cake filled with cooked apples and raisins served with ice cream and whipped cream. I would eat a slice of this every day if I could! Tip: we made a reservation online a few weeks in advance and I’m glad we did as it was quite busy.

My friend wanted me to try a traditional dutch dinner, and we came to Moeders. Small and full of diners, was grateful for our reservations. I do like the concept of focusing it on our lovely mothers, and how all the dishes and cups do not match since it is what was left by others. I felt like the service was a bit rude from the start so I was a bit turned off by the place. We ordered the Dutch Rice Table, and given bread with a hummus like spread to start. The Rice Table included various kinds of potatoes(roasted red, mashed, etc) with 2 servings of pork belly and sausage, 2 different types of beef, pickled cabbage, sweet apples and pear. The food was just okay, it was all pretty bland and I had to top it off with salt and pepper. The beef was perfectly cooked though, super tender and delicious, just lacked flavor. Couldn’t leave without a slice of apple pie, and it was probably one of the best I have ever had. This city is known for pies, and they sure make a mean one! The rice plate was 19 euros, beer another 4, so came out to close to 30 euros a person with dessert.

This turned out to be my favorite restaurant during our trip to Amsterdam. Both the food and the restaurant were heartwarming and pleasant! I ordered Betty’s Hachée, which is a hashed beef dish, served with boiled potatoes and steamed cabbage. Oh my gosh, the meat was incredible. A perfect texture, like it had fallen off the bone and then stewed in an amazing juice, this paired with the potatoes was absolute heaven. My companion got the Hodgepodge, which you’ve seen is the classic dish, and the most instagrammble :-) His was amazing as well, with the meatball being the best part. He also started with Split pea soup, and they served him a portion that 3 people could probably split! Highly recommended to check out. Make sure you make a reservation via their website, as they’re to capacity every night.
