A wide variety of asian. We went for the Surinamese food. Having never had it before I can only say it was quite delicious. Seemed a bit more like something you would get in Hong Kong. I had the SIR-FRIEDNOODLES with MIXEDMEATS. Somewhat plain but the meats were flavorful, the sausage sweet. Also sweet was the bill, this place is a bargain.

Surinamese /Chineese hybrid pretty much any kind of dish that crosses your mind, it’s my new comfort food restaurant just what you need in a cold rainy Amsterdam night. Price is reasonable but I tend to order a lot so it ends up being +60 € They have delivery for incredibly lazy people like me hehe

This place was just OK. For Amsterdam, it’s pretty cheap… there were some entrees on the menu that were less than 6 Euros. They also serve tons of rice with their meals, so you will not leave hungry. However, the food was not great. Two people in our group ordered sweet and sour chicken and it was pretty bad — the sauce was very gelatinous. I ordered a chow mein with shrimp and pork, and I’d say it was the best entrée at the table. The food also came super fast… so fast that it left me with the conclusion that it was all pre-prepared. The atmosphere is also lacking, as it feels almost cafeteria-like. For the same price, I’ve had better Chinese at Full Moon in the Hague(far away, I know, but it has better food, nicer interior, etc.). All in all, good place to go with a group but otherwise I think I’ll pass.

The food is relatively cheap compared to the surrounding restaurants although they are still expensive from US $ point of view. Most dishes are € 7 – 10. We ordered fuyonghai and bakmi with chicken. Fuyonghai was pretty good but the bakmi was a disappointment, especially the chicken.

Chinese-Surinamese food? What the heck is that? Perhaps centuries ago Chinese traders and contract workers settled in Suriname, the former Dutch colony in South America, and this is what the melting pot wrought. And it’s pretty delicious! I come here whenever visiting Amsterdam because it’s down home, tasty food and cheap! Kam Yin has a plain, undistinguished Chinese restaurant interior, but the full house each night doesn’t seem to mind. This time we arrived at closing time and they were turning people away. Luckily my Dutch friends are regulars so we got to sit down. We ate as they stacked chairs on tables all around us! We didn’t care. The food came fast as usual(or maybe the cooks wanted to go home)! The roast duck with rice was excellent, with a sauce over the duck that had slightly different exotic spices that I’m not used to in American Chinatown restaurants that serve roast duck. The curry and vegetarian dishes are also delicious but blended with what I taste as Caribbean accents. If you’re adventurous, order food you haven’t tried before and eat family style so you can try a bunch of dishes.

I ate 2 dinners here, ordered the same dish but was quite different in terms of quality. The roti seemed weird.

Empfehlenswert!

Some things and places just are a part of who you are. Kam Yin for me is one of those places. My mother and a younger version of myself have been going there since the 80s. Yes the locale and ambiance will make you scratch your head for a minute. But the minute you drink some surinam ginger beer and taste the rice, fried rice and tjauwmin with moksi meti you instantly are whisked away to a small toko in south america where cultures get together. Yes there are some sore spots(the roti is something I would not recommend) but the speedy service, great takeaway and delivery options and cheap prices with tasty suriname fastfood will make Kam Yin the place that is a part of me: 5 stars for this fantastic bastion for surinam/chinese excellence.

Fast and easy order, extensive menu and quite tasty food. I like the fact that the takeaway line is a separate one. Makes the orders go fast. Maybe a bit to fast given that it’s food that I would like to be properly cooked. Menu is big and extensive. Nothing extraordinary, but I’m sure the menu has a lot of hidden secrets for the one that has some time to try it all out. I tried the Indonesian soup that was a bit bland, chicken skewers that were good and schechuan beef that was really nice! I would go here again, but I would spend some more time with the menu to try to find the really special dishes.

This good review is mainly based off how impressed i was by the service. They make the food very fast and bring it out to large groups at the same time. The restaurant was very crowded, but they still brought the food out simultaneously and it was hot and delicious. Great food for the price too.

Quite simply the worst meal I’ve ever had. Big portions but just shit ingredients, meat full of bones and just horrid. I’m no connoisseur, and liked the cheap price, but the food really was yucky. Yet, the place was packed, inexplicably… So, make you’re own mind u p, but for me, it was awful

Kam Yin is a solid 3 stars if you get the right thing, especially because it’s probably one of the best values in Amsterdam. This place is pretty low key and casual, and is best described as a Chinese-Surinamese fusion. We didn’t know what to expect of Surinamese cuisine, and still I can’t really describe what distinguishes Surinamese cuisine from Chinese or other cuisines after trying Kam Yin. The special chicken, which is marinated roast chicken, is definitely worth ordering. It was super juicy and well flavored. Not necessarily something to go out of your way to try, but I’ll definitely be coming back to order this for take-away. The roti here is different from what you might imagine, especially if you’ve only had roti in the States. The roti bread itself is much heavier, and is more like a large pancake than the spiral-shaped fluffy stuff you tear. It’s pretty good, though not what I’m used to. We ordered the lamb, which was on the heavy side– I think I would go with the chicken next time. The beer here is cheap, but it’s also served in a really small glass, so I guess you get what you pay for!

feeling a bit fuzzy after a tour of some of the nice beer bars in amsterdam, this establishment was exactly where i wanted to be. we were seated right away and the food was brought out not too long after we ordered. i got the special chicken roti and it did not disappoint. the chicken was tender, the sauce was good, and the roti soaked up everything. with a generous dollop of the chili paste as well as a few slices of those hot yellow chilies provided at the table, it went down more than easily. the only reason i didn’t give the fourth star was because the roti was a bit. doughy? in an under-cooked way. maybe this specific one is supposed to be like that, but i’ve never had roti like that before.

Great option for eat-in and take away. Surinamese and Indonesian food is so addictive! This place serves it up in brick-sized portions(at least for take away): Probably good for two meals in fact. This place is always buzzing given its location in Centrum. I’ve only ever had take away from here and it has never disappointed. A solid option if you want quick and satisfying that isn’t a burger or frites.

Leider etwas eklig.

Very excited to finally try Surinamese food, and Kam Yin didn’t disappoint! Mix of Chinese, Indonesian and Caribbean, although we stuck mainly with the Asian flavors. Plenty of vegetarian options, right in the center of town, very affordable and fast service.

Happened to select this place from the few reviews on Unilocal… unfortunately, the reviewers all need to experience better Chinese food. While there were some Indonesian dishes, the menu is predominantly Chinese, and even though it is very cheap to eat here, the food is a little bit less than okay. It is a place frequented by tourists, myself included. One of the telltale signs was an appetizer we ordered came immediately after the waiter walked away… seriously, less than 30 secs. Com’on!!! Argh, and then the plate of stir fried noodles with BBQ meats came and all the meat looked a little dry like they’ve been warming all day; perhaps even overnight. The service in contrast was good, and very attentive. The place is very large and can accommodate anywhere from a couple to a split table of 16 we sat next to. If some of the folks think this is good Chinese/Indonesian food, you need to try other places more. There are bound to be places that are a cut above without spending a lot of money or going too much out of your way.

Fast, cheap, good. What more you want? Go here for a quick, great tasting but cheap bite. Don’t go for ambiance.

Good, much and cheap asian food. Especially the menus for two have an excellent relation quality-price. But it is so much, we couldn’t eat all the things. The atmosphere is more like in a bistro, very loud and very busy, that’s why I only give three stars. It is not really my case, but if this fact is not a problem for you, go there and have a good asian meal.

The peeps and I were told repeatedly by locals and tourists that Surinamese and Indonesian food is what’s really good in Amsterdam. Listen to them, because they speaketh THETRUTH! I don’t know if Kam Yin is the crème de la crème, but the food was damn good and more importantly, hella cheap! 8 people feasted like royalty for € 15 each. Vegetarians will burst through the seams here. I had: –Schezuan tofu — This was perfection in a bowl. Nice and spicy. I had to beat the meatarians off with my chopsticks because they were loving this dish a little too much! –Vegetable roti — potato curry stew with roti skin. This dish was very similar to the roti I’ve had back home in Trinidad. Needless to say, I was in love and devoured this goodness in record time. The meatarians inhaled several pork/chicken/shrimp/duck dishes, so I guess it’s safe to assume that every offering at this place is legit. Service was super quick, although not the friendliest. But that mattered none since we had plates upon plates of exotic goodness to keep us properly distracted, satisfied and happy!
