IJ-kantine

Moments from the ferry, great view, atmosphere and good. The service is decent and so are he drinks. Why not try it!

On the other side of the IJ opposite Centraal Station is a small business park where this restaurant is located. They have table service for food, snacks, bottled and draft beer. It’s usually crowded on the terrace but they have plenty of seating on the inside.

Nice athmosphere with spacious, bright interior. Food is nice, a little more pricey compared to Norderlicht. Service is a little slow-​ish. It’s child-​friendly place so expect some noise and red-​cheeked kinderen running around :)

Service? more like self — service. had to run after the staff to order, correct the order, pay, well, i could’ve made a burger myself too.
The food… Okay, they messed up the order, but fine, can happen, never mind. The food was cold, probably sitting in the kitchen waiting for the waiter. I thought about giving it back, but that would’ve taken even longer so I decided against it, and i didn’t want to make my friends wait.
What i wouldn’t tolerate is that i was sick for the rest of the evening after that burger…
That wasn’t a fun night at all!

Tja was soll man dazu nur sagen. Die eigentliche Location, zu der wir hinwollten hatte geschlossen, also entschlossen wir uns für diese.
Optisch wirklich gelungen. Fabrikhalle trifft Bar. Ein Mix aus Industrial Style, das Ganze mit maritimen Akzenten versehen und sehr modern in Szene gesetzt.
Das war es dann leider auch schon mit den positiven Aspekten.
Der Service schwankte zwischen gelangweilt und überfordert, obwohl nicht wirklich viel los war. Das Essen benötigt sehr viel Zeit von der Küche an den Tisch, obwohl es sich hierbei nur Rührei, ein paar Müslis und einem Apfelkuchen handelte.
Stichwort Apfelkuchen. Am Vortag hörte ich noch, das der Apfelkuchen eines der nationalen Leibspeisen ist und freute mich schon auf diesen.
Was kam war zwei müde Stücken eines Plattenkuchen, der wohl eher neben den Äpfel stand, als mit denen jemals in Berührung gekommen zu sein.
Von der Konsistent war er ok, geschmacklich sehr süss, aber Apfel-​techisch hatte er diese nur geküsst! ;-))
Einziger Wehmusttropfen, wenigstens das Wlan funktionierte gut und der Blick auf Amsterdam bzw. den Hafen ist sehr schön.

Eigentlich wollten wir ja ganz woanders hin, aber nachdem wir vor verschlossenen Toren standen mussten wir ausweichen.
Beim betreten wird man echt (positiv) geschockt, die alte Halle wurde zu einer Bar/​Bistro umgebaut und sieht absolut fantastisch aus! Der Industrial Style trifft auf neumodische Hipster-​Elemente und das Ergebnis lässt sich durchaus sehen.
Tja, allerdings benahm sich das Personal so als wären sie selber abends Stammgast in der Bar… Selten hab ich so ein langsames und unmotiviertes Personal gesehen, meine Bestellung kam nur zur hälfte an und musste neubestellt werden (War zwar nur der Kaffee, aber trotzdem…) was hier leider ewig dauert! Bis das essen kam hätte ich eine Kanne Kaffee austrinken können und das essen selber war echt «interessant».
Mein Rührei mit toast war völlig trocken, es gab weder Butter noch irgendeine andere Möglichkeit das ganze aufzuweichen. Dazu kommt das der Koch anscheinend keine Gewürze mag, mein Ei war gänzlich ungewürzt und sehr fad. Dafür gab es Maisbrot dazu, was sicher toll ist wenn es nicht (brot)trocken serviert wird ;)
Übrigens befindet sich im Eingangsbereich eine kleine Spielecke für kids, was natürlich Eltern mit Kinder anzieht und den Geräuschpegel völlig in die höhe schießen lässt… alles in einem sehr unangenehm!
Fazit:
— Laut… (2 Sterne)
— nichts für Menschen unter Zeitdruck (2 Sterne)
— Geschmacklich was für Anti-​Würzer (1 Stern)
— Wahnsinns location! Optisch haut einem das echt um. (5 Sterne)
Schade IJ-​kantine, es hätte was werden können mit uns… Aber da hilft selbst das kostenlose WiFi nicht wirklich!

I keep coming back to this place for the oysters, view, and the fact they have a sandbox in the corner to keep my kids entertained for long periods.
The service is quite horrible, I agree with everyone below. But it’s relaxing enough sitting by the water that I don’t mind very much — rather used to it being in Amsterdam. Add a cold white beer and oysters and I am a happy girl. The food overall is very good. I will keep coming back. :)

A contradiction… Great food, small servings. Great location and décor, slow service. And the restroom was a trailer outside. Best oxtail soup I have ever had, but waited forty five minutes for a grilled sirloin.

OK, the sandwich was fine, if a little overpriced. The soup was fine. The décor is really, really cool, with the huge windows and the bottles of liquor stacked to the ceiling.
The service, though, was so bad we laughed about it for days afterward. The staff is very young and quite friendly — they seem to have a good time working there. We had to practically BEG our server for a menu, and even then she brought a snack menu, so we had to beg once again for a lunch menu. She repeatedly asked what we wanted to drink but was unable to tell us what drinks they served. (She said there is no drink menu, despite that impressive display of liquor bottles. Another table had wine, but who knows how they figured out which wines the place carries.)
The food came, it was fine, and the server never returned. We saw her furiously cleaning tables throughout the restaurant, which was pretty funny, since it wasn’t like the place was overrun with patrons. Eventually we tracked her down and paid — only to be told that the credit card machine wasn’t working that day. We paid cash.
The ferry ride over is fun and free.

Nice and friendly staff, the view from the terrace is very nice over the water to Amsterdam. This place is child friendly with a small play area inside. The food was nice without being anything special but I think this is reflected in its reasonable cost. I would recommend especially for younger families, (there is a kids menu as well.) I had the burger which was good and well cooked with nice relish. All in all a pleasant experience that i would recommend but nothing spectacular.

With service this bad why do I always return?

I went with some friends this past weekend for dinner. I agree with the other reviewer in that the food is way overpriced. I had the Caesar Salad at 15 €! I ordered it without anchovies which came on the salad anyway. It was nice but too much money. The service was a little so-​so as well.
The ferry across from Amsterdam Centraal Station was really nice. This review was written in 2009.

A unique experience in a quiet place. IJ-​Kantine is a great place to relax and whine down, it’s just North of Amsterdam. I stopped in here this weekend with my Dutchman to grab a drink. This is one of my favorite places to unwind, while sipping on a hot cup of tea. The IJ-​Kantine offers a wonderful scenic route along the harbor. It’s an ideal spot for locals and tourist to enjoy lunch or dinner. Also, a great location for big groups because of its laid back atmosphere. What I love about this place that it allows you to be removed from the bustling crowds and tourist environments without having to go so far away.
