As the reviewer before me has mentioned, the location of Hotel Old Quarter is indeed incredible — you’re just a moments walk from the station, one block from the Red Light District, minutes from Anne Frank’s house, etc etc etc. That’s why I chose to stay at HOQ — I was only spending one night and wanted to zip and out easily. Unfortunately, I wish I had done a bit more research before booking. Despite the price, HOQ is more of a hostel than a hotel. I guess it’s kind of perfect for people under 25 who are only in Amsterdam for the coffee shops, but the hotel doesn’t really present itself that way… Anyway, here’s the facts: The reception IS the bar. As in, the receptionist is the bartender There are some crazy stairs that you have to take to get to your room. Steep and all windy. Just a heads up. The shared shower/bath(shared amongst ~5 rooms) wasn’t UNclean but did inspire me to run out to grab shower shoes. The bed is soft! There was a sink in my room. I found this… interesting. There were black handmarks all over the wall. Easily could be cleaned off, but no one had. It was really, really, really loud at night. Bring earplugs. So what’s my point? My point is that if I wanted to stay in a nice hostel(which is what I would call HOQ) I would be perfectly happy with this place. But I didn’t want that. And I didn’t pay for that. But that’s what I got.

The location is incredible. other than that its not the Ritz but it is what it is. It is safe they have a bar in the lobby the food is pretty good also. If your American and have never traveled to Europe and have no sense of adventure or want to be pampered go some place else like the Ritz in Chicago
