If whole grain bread is your thing; this place is heaven. At any time of day, any time of year, you’ll find a line of people waiting to get their bread. This place has been around for ages and once you taste the bread, you’ll know why.

Great bread, great cocoa, great staff, great everything! This was stop #1 in our«Hungry Birds» Food Tour(which you should absolutely check out at ). We had an assortment of traditional Dutch breakfast items(hot cocoa, bread, cheese, cookies, etc.) in the dining room, where we were told about the cool history of Hartog’s. We then moved on to the bakery where we bought a loaf of whole wheat for a couple of dollars that we devoured in less than 2 days. We loved that this place took us slightly away from the touristy areas. Highly recommended if you want to see a more side of the City.

Love this bakkery. For take away lunch/breakfast/coffee, for buying bread, or to eat at the terrace or inside. The bread is really one of the best in Amsterdam. Also love their pastries, cookies and peanutbutter! SOGOOD! Around lunchtime there sometimes is a line outside but waiting is totally worth your sandwich!(I love the egg salad)

The only bakery in Amsterdam that mills it’s own flour, Hartog’s bakes whole meal bread only. Three times a day. They need to bake three times a day because as soon as the bread comes out of the oven, people queue up with the queue spilling into the street and on busy days even around the corner. Why the queues you might ask? The answer is simple: the best whole meal bread in Amsterdam! Hartog’s doesn’t add anything to their standard bread but flour, yeast, salt and water. They sell other breads too, such as a spelt bread and a version with sunflower seeds, but these are made in the same simple way. If you have a sweet tooth they cater for that as well. Typical dutch treats such as gevulde koek(almond paste tartlets), gevulde speculaas(almond paste in a spice dough), apple pies etc., all made with whole meal flour. Delicious enough to murder for! If you want to see a once a year spectacle, come here the days before New Year when they bake oliebollen(Dutch doughnuts) on the street in front of the bakery and the queue can be up to 100 meters in length!

Volkoren Bakkerij homemade bakery is truly an exceptional shop. I stop in here frequently to pick up a distinct loaf of compact bread for my Dutchman. What I find so interesting is there are no preservative or additives in their bread. It’s not too often you find authentic bakery shops that remind you of how your parents/grandparents use to bake. This bakery shop is unique, well price, and customer service friendly. There is nothing quite like a wonderful aroma of fresh homemade bake pastries and bread lurking in the air. One of the things I truly appreciate about the Netherlands is that I find so many fine, quality, natural and organic foods, something that I think is very rear in the states. I love the fact that I can eat healthy without having to be force to pay a high price for quality food.

Voted Dutch Bakery of the Year in 2005 for a reason: good bread, good cookies, good cereal, good everything. There’s always a queue, but it moves really fast.

an extraordinary bakery. The one and only one bakery which mills its flour. No additions: just straight and plain delicious whole wheat bread. And just a round the corner(Wibautstraat) you can enjoy it with a cup of coffee, tea et cetera. A must for bread addicts.
