This is my go-to place for breakfast/brunch. They serve breakfast till 1 or 2 I believe so if you need a little breakfast pick-me-up stop by here. Love their scones and assortment of homemade jams. They also have delicious Quiches. Make sure to check out their board for their soups/quiche/scones of the day. Great for groups except for the smallest location.

I was attracted by e Quiche in the window, and added a bowl of their soup(Almond & Celery) now I don’t like either but thought I would give it a go, WOW amazing, served with fresh bread made on the premises, just want you want on a cold Amsterdam afternoon. One final comment, service was as good as the food, I explained I was of sure of the soup, and out came a small sample before ordering. All this plus a fresh Orange juice for € 10 great value.

Went back again and I must reiterate this place is scumdeleeeishisss. So incredibly yummy. This time, we brought some passionfruit jam back with us. Sadly it didn’t make it home with us because we broke it out during our visit with family in Copenhagen and it was half gone after our first breakfast. Don’t leave without trying that jam.

I was with five friends on an early morning jaunt into central Amsterdam from the airport during a 6 hour layover. We stumbled around the red light district for a while before we realized that De Bakkerswinkel had temporarily moved to the next neighorhood over while renovating. Still, finding it was totally worth the effort. After spending the prior three weeks in Uganda, it was a reverse culture shock to land in this adorably homey little bakery/café.(How on Earth is it that this place is typically located in the red light district?) It reminded me of an airier, less cluttered version of Alice’s Teacup in NYC or a cozier Pain Quotidien, only with a purring resident cat roaming around. We were greeted warmly by the two men behind the counter as we seated ourselves at a communal table and took advantage of the free wireless internet, which to our relief was much faster than anything we had experienced in weeks. The relatively inexpensive breakfast menu consisted mostly of pastries and breads but included heartier quiches and bacon and eggs. Nearly all of us went for the fresh baked«rustic» sourdough topped with a choice of cheeses, meats, and homemade spreads. I had mine with Taleggio cheese, tomato, and its recommended accompaniment, the apple-olive jam.(It was tough deciding between that and the walnut pomegranate spread.) I made the right choice — the combination was divine. The bread was more of a multigrain than a sourdough, yet it was much lighter than typical multigrain breads. The Taleggio was fresh, buttery, and delicate. It was not nearly as strong as other Taleggios I’ve tried in the past. It paired perfectly with the sweet savoriness of the spread, which was more apple than olive. I washed it down with a fruit shake(really a mixed fresh fruit juice) that was fresh but could have used a touch more sweetener. But now I come to the KICKER, the absolute piece de resistance. Our server brought us an extra basket of breads with a trio of jams. I’m not a big jam eater(maybe I have sensory integration issues, but I’m not down with sticky foods at all), but the pineapple-basil jam redefined the genre for me entirely. Slightly sweet, with a hint of basil flavor, and a perfect, not-too-sticky consistency. I almost didn’t want to save room for the passionfruit lemon curd or mango jam after that but I’m so glad I did. They were sold by the jar as well. If I had managed to find an extra few inches of space in my bag I would have definitely purchased one. Best six hour layover ever, thanks to De Bakkerswinkel!

Not sure why it’s listed as $$$… they’ve got delicious sandwiches on freshly homemade bread, a great variety of sweets, and a happy little home bakery atmosphere. Love it. I grabbed a sandwich and a few treats and wandered around munching delightedly. Very friendly also.

Perfect. Track the street numbers so you don’t pass it by and try not to get too distracted by the magic mushrooms neon sign on the alley corner. Verging on the red-light district, this is a warm oasis in a sea of touristy mecca. The quiche that I had was the best of my life, all the better for getting to eat it with disposable wooden fork and knife. PC the utensils are not, but delicious indeed was the food, and even better with homemade banana bread to follow. I’ll be back tomorrow for a mid afternoon lunch. This time, chocolate tart.
